With up to 750GB of pure digital storage in a single drive, the Barracuda 7200.10 may be the largest, most reliable disc drive around. New perpendicular recording technology supports vertically stored data bits, enabling increased areal density and dependability for workstations and performance PCs. The hard drive's 3.0 Gb/s Serial ATA interface enables the user to connect to, and work with, other systems at a faster speed without any extra efforts. The hard disk has a 16 MB cache and works at 7200RPM, blowing away the 5400RPM “limit” for large scale hard drives.
Each time your PC is switched on, the Clean Sweep feature will fine-tune your drive, maintaining both media and drive reliability. Adaptive Fly Height maintains the distance between disc head and platter, based on fluctuations in environmental operating conditions. The Seagate SoftSonic Motor facilitates noiseless operations, while the Enhanced G-Force Protection prevents data corruption. In short, you have a set of features designed to ensure that your precious data will stay safe for a long time to come.
. . . Besides, we all know you just want to brag that you have the biggest drive on the block!

Lets cook an egg!
- Pros: Incredible storage capacity, with outstanding read/write times.
- Cons: HOT!!! O.M.F.G. These drives get so hot i cannot touch them with my bare fingers. I have had to RMA two of these drives due to what I can only imagine is damaged caused by heat. First I had these drives spaced appropriately with direct fan cooling. Too hot. Then I took them OUT of the case and placed them on top away from all internal components. Still too hot. Finally I have removed them all together and am awaiting HDD Heat sinks to arrive to help with cooling.
- Other Thoughts: I have 5 of these drives in a RAID 5 configuration (2.7Tb total storage). Dont forget about the 2TB limit on NTFS. Keep in mind that unless you are using Server 2003 or WinXP 64bit running an Itanium processor with an EFI bios that will allow you to use GPT instead of NTFS for your drives, you WILL be limited by the LBA to 2Tb partitions. Some RAID controllers (Such as my 3ware 9550S) will allow you to automatically split your RAID volume into 2Tb chunks. This seems to work best.
Be aware of the large amount of heat generated by these drives. It is a force to be reckoned with.
Largest Consumer Drive now by Far
- Pros: 750GB
16MB Sata~2 Perpendicular Recording (this is key, watch the new and long awaited capacity wars that really died off at 200GB).
- Cons: Price. But you always pay more for Uber highend capacity anyways and this price isn't crazy expensive.
- Other Thoughts: 75 cents a Gig is an good ammount if you
A.) want this capacity in a single drive. B.) want to max out potential
Think of it this way if you have 4 HD slots in your computer you can go the cheaper route of 250GB drives and max out at 1TB or you purchase 4 of these 3TB.
or if you Max out the drives inyour computer already it doesn't make sense to remove a 300GB drive for 500GB where as gaining an extra 450GB by buying this makes more sense.
People really complaining about price wouldn't by high end parts anyways.

Works for 2 days
- Pros: Good price, perpendicular recording
- Cons: Fairly loud compared to other drives, and it worked for 2 days and Vista started reporting hw problem with the disk and it crashed. Very disappointed
- Other Thoughts: Loud, unreliable. There appears to be better options out there...what was I thinking.
2 of 3 new drives -
- Pros: A good price for the capacity, 5 year warranty.
- Cons: My drives were made in China. While setting up a 3 disk RAID 5 array for a NAS with these drives, I noticed some performance problems with the Array. While running my testing my wife walked in my office and asked if I was trying to communicate using Morse code. I walked in the room where the system was running and heard: The Click of Death.
Random access test patterns made 2 of the 3 drives sound like woodpeckers banging on a tin can. SMART seek_error_rate values of 36 and 46 on the noisy drives (good drive is @ 66, the 'imminent failure' threshold is 30). All three have different seek times, especially for full stroke- in fact the worst drives full stroke seek time is more than twice that of the functional drive: (72ms vs 35ms).
Back they go to newegg, and I'm out shipping costs..
- Other Thoughts: Either newegg needs to improve the way it ships hard drives to withstand high G impacts; or Seagate's QC is so far gone, they will soon go broke from servicing 50% of their drives during their 5 year warranty. I guess I need to run an IOMETER torture test on every new drive for a week before production use, and evaluate both SMART info and performance info to be sure the product is up to spec. You couldn't pay me to put data on these disks otherwise!
Worked and Died
- Pros: Worked for a day.
- Cons: Died the next day. Started clicking on start up. This was a secondary drive added to a Media Center. On boot drive would click, spin down, spin up. Vista would recognise it and show the files, but as you would try to play the files, playback would freeze and drive would click and spin down, spin up.
- Other Thoughts: Need better QC at the factory!
