Death is in the air

Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year

Pros: 1. Very quiet when it was still working in my RAID 5 array. But that's about it.

Cons: 1. Three ST3500630AS drive failures in less than 300 operational hours.
2. Utterly unreliable. After a few hundred hrs, SmartMon tools started reporting read failures on long tests. From there on, the drive dropped out of the array in under 2 hours and started clicking wildly. This happened on 3 drives at different times.
At least two of the drives were so fried that the system wouldn't boot with them in it. And no, the case has very adequate ventilation and the temp is monitored; so it wasn't a heat issue.

Other Thoughts: I have had 4 seagate drive failures this past month. I have had one 640GB 7200.11 drive that arrived DOA and was promptly replaced (thank you Newegg!) and two ST3500630AS 7200.10 (bought elsewhere) that failed within two weeks of operation in a RAID 5 config. The refurb replacement from Seagate also failed (4 hrs after I repaired the array). That's a total of 4 failures (3 of them being ST3500630AS, and not all from the same batch either) in under 4 weeks! I haven't had any Seagates fail on me before, so I can say that that either a) Seagate is not paying attention to QC, or b) I am emitting some sort of an invisible death ray. Somehow, I am inclined to believe in the former.

High Seek Errors

Tech Level: high - Ownership: less than 1 day

Pros: Lots of space

Cons: Bad drive. Over 2 million seek errors in just 12 hours running SpinRite.

Other Thoughts: This is not the first Seagate drive to be of extreamly poor quality. I will never buy another another Seagate drive again.
