Remember when a machine that offered half a Terabyte of storage took up an entire room? Well, today, the Seagate FreeAgent Pro offers 500 GB of storage in less room than a hardback novel! The 7200 rpm FreeAgent Pro will send a project to a flash drive, copy audio to your MP3 player, upload photos to your hosting service, and put your entire "My Documents" folder on your own secure Seagate website (subscription required) for 24/7 access, all in no time flat.
The unit can also perform automatic revisions of your content, so you always have backup of the latest version of your work. Should you develop a problem, you can use the backup to roll the system back to an earlier time, with no loss: system settings are taken back in time, updates to photos, music and critical data files are kept current.
The FreeAgent Pro connects by eSATA, FireWire 400 or USB 2.0, and includes software to improve data sharing and remote access. The modular interface system lets you adjust your connection type for best performance. The FreeAgent Pro is an excellent solution for video editing, high-resolution imaging, data backup or general storage.

decent drive with some lame features
- Pros: Looks great, nice and sleek, runs quiet.
- Cons: My main annoyances are that the featured FireWire connection requires that you uninstall the usb/esata ports and screw in the firewire ones in their stead. Why not just have all 3 at once? Also, it comes with firewire and usb cables, but no eSATA cable? What's up with that?
Another imporant note: the FreeAgent Tools will NOT install on 64-bit OS. So I'm left in the dust with that, as I run Windows XP x64. It also has an awkward power plug shape.
- Other Thoughts: This drive uses a heatsink for cooling. The base gets pretty hot and it begins to smell of burning metal. I'm not really sure if this a sign of cheapness or if that's just how HDD heatsinks work.
I haven't really owned it long enough to rate any performance issues, I mostly wanted to notify others of its drawbacks which I haven't seen mentioned in any reviews or specs. Now I have to go out and buy an eSATA cable which will tack on $20+ to the price of this drive.
eSata troubles at first but awesome
- Pros: Love the look and the quickness. I also like that you can switch the ports. Hopefully if a new connection comes out Seagate will allow you to purchase new add-ons.
- Cons: I had the hardest time getting the eSata to work. I tried everything to get it work. Updated my drivers, tried a different cable, got a different ExpressCard, updated my bios. Nothing. I was sure it was Vista. Then I saw a post about cables not fitting in right so i shaved the end down with an exacto knife. Now it works great!
- Other Thoughts: gets a real hot on the bottom so be careful where you put it.

Nice looks, decent/nice speeds with USB. eSATA atrocious
- Pros: Nice looks.
USB connectivity works consistently-Read transfer rates top out around 20MB/s for me when transferring large files; 10-15 when transferring lots of small ones. Write transfer a few MB/s slower writing the same files. This could my PC's USB controller though, others have reported slightly faster rates when transferring via USB
Memeo Autobackup software pretty reliable.
I don't have a 1394 adapter and didn't get to test that interface.
- Cons: eSATA interface is absolutely awful.
I tried three ways: 1.)USB-to-eSATA with 3ft eSATA-to-eSATA cable 2.)Laptop with eSATA port using same cable as above 3.)Bracket on the back of my PC that brings the internal SATA to the back and attaching a 3ft cable SATA-to-eSATA cable
With 2 and 3, the transfer rate is a nice 40-60MB/s depending on files being transferred. With 1, it's around 32-which is the stated limit to the USB-to-eSATA adapter.
BUT, the interface regularly drops out.
The transfer itself will stop for 20-40 seconds and pick back up-event viewer will be filled with hundreds of messages about paging errors.
When finishing a large transfer that was plagued with the dropouts above, the drive will simply disappear from the system. It has to power cycled to show up again.
I've not had this problem with other eSATA drives-hJust this 500GB drive and a 750GB FreeAgent (not pro-no 1394)
Orange glow
- Pros: My second unit - switches on and off when the PC does all by itself when attached via eSata - I like the Memeo backup software despite the default settings needing tweaking - set it and forget it!
- Cons: The eSata connections are so fragile - move the PC or the external HD slightly and the cables disconnect. The Memeo backup software defaults are to show a message every time a file is copied (very annoying) and to make moere than one version of the backed-up object (with a date appended to the name) - really awful to recover what you want if you don't disable this (unless you really need it).
- Other Thoughts: Anoying system tray Icons for Seagate Drive / Tools which cannot be used if using eSata connection.
So far great!
- Pros: I've had this drive for a week now, and it's pretty solid. It's also one of the prettier drives I've ever seen. It has a band of yellow light around it at all times and when it's being used it glows brighter. It has a solid stand with esata, usb, firewire... I also have to say I really can't hear it even when it's really working. We will see what my review is 6 months from now.
- Cons: It was one hundred and fifteen dollars... That was the biggest drawback. That is a little pricey for a 500gb external... But it's worth it, this is one of the nicer hard drives I've ever seen, built like a rock. ESATA pretty much takes the cake
- Other Thoughts: Others have complained because it's "readiness" can be a little slow if you wake it up from standby. But that's a small price to pay for this nice drive.
