Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31000340AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Pros: This drive was awesome when I got it back in 2008 and the packing was satisfactory. Worked right out of the box without a hitch into an XP system and I was able to transfer a lot of video and music files to it. I only ever used it for storage because I needed the space (I use small drives for my programs). I got it for a good price at the time (I think it was on sale during a holiday) and the transfer/write speeds were really, really nice.

Cons: Well, some time around the middle of 2011 it started developing this click that continued to get louder. The warranty had already expired and the noise freaked me out because I've had drives fail on me before. Thinking the worst, I transferred the data I cared about, swapped it to an enclosure so it could "die" a peaceful death, and put it into retirement. It's 2013 now and it still hasn't quite died...it still has that horrible hanger-noise-on-a-metal-closet-rod/click of death thing going on whenever it reads or writes and it won't format, and while I should just chuck the thing, now I'm curious as to how much longer I can string the thing along! =D

Other Thoughts: I'm currently looking for a replacement and I'm wavering between another Seagate or a WD...I've used both in the past and I'm currently using both now, so it's a bit of a toss up.

Pros: Worked excellent while it lasted, was fast and easy to install windows 7 64 on

Cons: One minor earthquake killed it. The quake was barely big enough to rock the shocks on my car on my way home from a funeral. It merely felt like a little pothole on all four tires at once. I come home and find it dead. Luckily it was still under warenty so I sent it back. I dont think they liked the box I sent it back in. I went to my local computer shop and got a WD box. Lucky for me I had thoughtfully bought an auto backup drive with software so it wasn't as catastrophic as it could have been. Then I installed Windows on a little rinky dink 80 gig IDO that I had and waited.

After two days I was looking online and saw the Western Digital black drive on what rhymes with Guest Guy for $100. I did some research and found it was a very good little 1tb drive so I immediately bought it. Never had a problem since. When the replacement came back I turned it onto a storage drive.

Other Thoughts: Does not seem to make a good OS drive. It would sometimes pause as if it was busy thinking once I accessed the drive. It was the head resting. I know now that there is a tool that would disable that but I still prefer WD black over this brand. Seagate seems to be only good as backup drives and portables. Never again will I have a Seagate as the home OS drive.

Pros: none

Cons: Fails within 1 year. Replacements then fail.

Other Thoughts: I will never buy seagate again.

Pros: This drive has operated flawlessly and quietly for 3.5 years.
Seagate customer service was extremely courteous and had no problem replacing the drive even though it hasn't failed yet. It is just showing an increasing Reallocated Sector Count.

Cons: After 3.5 years of operation, I'm getting increased Reallocated Sector Counts, but drive hasn't failed yet.

Other Thoughts: I'm generally please with how this disk has been working in my ReadyNAS NV+ as part of 4 disks in an X-Raid array. Seagate customer service has been excellent so far.

Pros: If it works - it works ok and fast. Price was good too. 5 years warranty.

Cons: First drive died in several months and was replaced by Seagate. This drive worked for less than 4 years and died instantly and totally - drive is not recognized by the system anymore at all. 1Gb of data is gone (thankgod not that important, but still). And new Seagate drives come with 2 or 3 years warranty....

Pros: great while it lasted, no troubles whatsoever

Cons: died without any warning whatsoever, bought it 12/12/2008 and it died while I was returning from my uncle's funeral today. Turned a bad day tragic, since I had a bunch of stuff on it

Other Thoughts: not going to buy seagate again, wd all the way

Pros: Fast drive, worked well while it lasted

Cons: Died in 3 years, which is reasonable, especially considering the 5-year warranty. Shortest life span of any hard drive that I've owned, and I've owned many.

Other Thoughts: Unfortunately, I cannot read the drive, and Seagate's warranty terms and conditions state that they are not responsible for the disposal of the drive and its contents. Since the drive contained confidential financial data, it cannot safely be RMA'd under these terms, so the warranty is pointless. To be fair, the warranty terms of other manufacturers are probably very similar.

Pros: Very fast drive, made my 10000 rpm raptor look slow

Cons: died on me in less than a year, 800 GB of information gone.

Other Thoughts: I have two seagate drives that have been running for over 6 years without any problems, and this one dies on me in less than a year, I had a lot of important information on it because I had a false sense of security from my other drives. Going to try a different brand of drive this next time around.

Pros: Good service from Seagate

Cons: Needed service from Seagate

Other Thoughts: The drive started to get random errors from windows then failed all Seagate utility’s tests but I was able to get a backup. Seagate sent me a refurbished hard drive which failed catastrophically with no warning last week. Stick with the Caviar line of drives.

Pros: I've used Seagate drives in my last 4 builds. 2 x 120GB, 2 x 320GB, 2 x 500GB and now 2 x 1TB. I've not had one of these drives go bad yet (knock on wood)! I also use Seagate drives on the computers at work (not sure how many drives), never a bad drive! As far as I'm concerned, Seagate has a great track record. With hard drives the packaging and shipping had a lot to do with whether or not it goes bad. Thanks for the great shipping job Newegg and UPS!

Other Thoughts: Before the Seagate 120GB drives I always used WD. All of the sudden I started having bad drives with WD (new and old). All of my Seagate drives are still working to date.
