4 out of 5 eggsNot A Workstation Drive

Pros: Generally good performance and reliability. We've used these mechanisms (and the slightly older and better ST373454LW) in the past in small server builds. We've also used them as replacements for SPI (SCSI parallel interface) drives in older servers.

Cons: Newegg's price for this drive is excessive, given that SPI drives in general, especially in this size range, are technically replacement parts, not parts for new server builds.

These drives use 2mm jumper blocks instead of the 2.54mm blocks used on competitors' drives. Despite the small 2mm jumpers being somewhat difficult to obtain, Seagate doesn't furnish jumpers with these drives for configuring the SCSI ID, term power, etc.

There are no provisions for connecting a front panel activity LED to this drive, hence no way to determine when it is being accessed.

Other Thoughts: Our recommendation is to only purchase this model drive if you need an exact replacement. Otherwise, search around for comparable products made by other drive manufacturers.

Note that all ultra-320 SCSI drives are intended for server dury and don't incorporate design features intended to mitigate noise. Also, drives that spin in excess of 7,200 RPM must be forced-air cooled if rated life is to be achieved.

5 out of 5 eggsFast, Reliable

Pros: I've had two of these drives running for the past 6 years in a RAID 0 array. I've had my system running sometimes for months on end and they've been absolutely reliable. I haven't had any problems whatsoever.

Cons: No complaints

Other Thoughts: They are noisy, but they're not sold to be quiet drives. These were sold as high-performance, 15,000 RPM drives for use in servers, etc.

3 out of 5 eggsNoisy, fast

Pros: Fast, runs cool in a cooled cage. Nice response time.

Cons: Noisy, to the point of aggravation. Startup noises sound like its grinding itself to pieces. Two of the three that I purchased whine, one excessively so. There were no jumpers supplied with the drives with which one might configure the drives.

Other Thoughts: I have run SCSI interface drives for about 15 years now and have bought and used quite a number of them. I have had slow drives, other types of buses, scanners, etc. One of these drives is fairly silent, one is not too bad, and the last whines, waxing and waning. I hope they make the 3 years warranty mark.
