1 out of 5 eggs3 out of 5 DEAD in First Year

Pros: They work well while they are working.

Cons: I bought 4 of these drives almost a year ago. One of the four was DOA. I sent it back to Newegg immediately and I had a new one in about a week. As soon as the fifth drive spun up, there was a loud scratching sound but it performed okay at first. I've been custom building PC's for a living in the mid-80's and that's never a good sign. I decided to use this replacement drive to back up some data as my confidence in these drives was low and I was desperate to salvage my data. This replacement drive worked for a while and then went belly up after Newegg's return period had expired. A few weeks ago Windows 7 started reporting serious health issues on the third of the 5 drives.

I have no confidence in these Seagates'. I'm going to be shipping these 3 drives back to Seagate soon. I guess I'll use the replacement units sparingly for backup purposes.

I would say the 1,000,000 MTBF rating on these drives was exaggerated by a factor of 100. Stay clear of them!

Other Thoughts: I'm in the process of replacing all of these drives with WD's enterprise black drive - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136313. So far, much better success.

1 out of 5 eggsDanger Danger Will Robinson...

Pros: Cheap, high capacity

Cons: Bought 2 drives 12/2008. After 8 months one drive died, one is showing errors ( unfortunately tried to fix with Win7 chkdsk :-( ). Had to reboot to XP to run a working chkdsk.

Other Thoughts: Both drives were in an Antec case with good airflow running at 35C. One was a Win7 system disk ( the one that failed ) and the other was used for data ( DVR recording and such ).

1 out of 5 eggsAgree with general trend of this line of hard drives....

Pros: You get the good performance while it lasts.
You get the warm feeling of long warranty.

Cons: You get brought down to Earth the weeks/months after you're forced to exercise the RMA process.

(BTW manufacturers instructions on packaging failed drives being RMA'd made me recall that crystal glassware requires similar packaging, which - on the other hand - should make everyone think why the construction of the drive is so fragile).

in the past 3 months I RMA'd 2 of their 1TB drives with 32MB cache. got back 1TB replacements with 16MB cache. kind of kills your loyalty to a brand.

Other Thoughts: 1 million hours MTBF? do you believe these are tested in groups of hundreds or thousands longer than 1 day and the statistics allows the manufacturer to extrapolate number of failed drives to mark all others as 1 million hours?

do not believe statistics "gurus" at marketing departments. believe reviews on NewEgg.

1 out of 5 eggsSeagate SV35.3 = Garbage!

Pros: Well, if you believe the hype...Huge MTBF

Cons: I installed 5 of these drives in Hi-End Surveillance systems. After only one month, 2 drives were hitting the crash stop and were suddenly doing nothing but clicking loudly...2 TB of data gone! Sure they have a 5 year warranty, but if they do not even last a month, why spend the extra $$. Why not just get a cheap "regular" drive and hope it works for a while?

Other Thoughts: I read these reviews before purchase and was convinced the failures were caused by installing the incorrect product (using this "DVR certified" drive as a regular PC storage device." But I was sadly mistaken. These drives are nothing but garbage. If you get one that works for a while, consider yourself lucky. Personally, I will never buy from Seagate again!

5 out of 5 eggsWorking fine

Pros: Large and Quick and reasonably quiet.

Cons: Just as with most computer drives, you just thing you have enough, then you end up filling it up. Still happy though.

Other Thoughts: Been running it since 12/17/08 in mirrored configuration on ASUS Rampage II Extreme LGA X58 Mobo with no issues.

2 out of 5 eggs2 dead of 8 drives

Pros: Excellent warranty support on-line with cross-shipping option. I speak much more highly of Seagates ES.2 drives...I'm still more of a Seagate fan over Western Digital.

Cons: This series drive has poor reliabiilty - two dead drives after 6 weeks 24/7 operation. My confidence is down such that I need to change my RAID strategy from striping to mirroring.

Other Thoughts: Choose the 19.99 cross ship/prepaid return option for the warranty return since shipping will cost almost 1/2 as much anyway and you'll get the replacement in 2 days.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Drive

Pros: I have had this drive running in a TiVo Series 3 for about a year now without any problems.

Cons: Price at the time.

Other Thoughts: I bought this model on Seagate's suggestion. (They didn't have their 1 TB CS drives out at the time.) The SV has performed well.

1 out of 5 eggsdata killer

Pros: cheap

Cons: dead after several months. seagate customer service sucks, I call their 800 number, they said they would call back but never really called back, have to call them again and again. lost most of my data. hot like a heater.

won't buy ang seagate drive in the future, even hitachi and samsung are better than seagate.

Other Thoughts: if you decide to buy this , make sure you do have backup of everything and a cooling fan for it in your case.

go WD (just bought a 1T green drive) , they won't let you down.

1 out of 5 eggsFailure

Pros: Really Cheep 1TB

Cons: Failed after 1 month. seagate was going to charge $300 to recover the data.

Other Thoughts: i will never buy seagate again.
