Firmware issue causes Freezing in RAIDs
- Pros: The obivous pros are the high capacity, speed and cost of these drives. Unfortunately they're plagued by firmware issues that Seagate has yet to resolve. If you're using them in a high performance environment, I'd recommend you wait until these problems have been solved.
- Cons: These drives have a high tendency to freeze and time out for minutes at a time, which seems to make the RAID controller think they've failed. The controller then begins to re-optimize the data which slows down the RAID performance and puts your data at additional risk if another disk should decide to freeze up at an inopportune moment. Not a good feeling for someone who has a lot of essential data sitting on that RAID and needs it to be available. I'm a long time Seagate customer, and my other RAIDs are all populated with high-capacity seagate drives, and I've never had an issue to date. I'm hoping they'll sort this out with a firmware update soon.
- Other Thoughts: Seagate has somewhat reluctantly admitted that this issue exists, although consensus online that it's happening is clearer. Do a google search for "1.5 TB Seagate Freeze" and you'll find that several reputable sources, including Tom's Hardware, have articles on this issue.
- Pros: Huge Drive!
3 bought, no failures
- Cons: None at this time.
- Other Thoughts: Be mindful of the 2TB Logical drive limit. Unless you are using a 64-bit OS or one that is capable of GPT you will end up creating multiple arrays and spanning them inside windows if you have plans for a striped raid.
Stick with 1TB drives for your raid 0 needs.

Good Drive, Great Price
- Pros: Consistent, lots of space
- Cons: Not a big complaint, but I suppose I could have bought a faster drive.
- Other Thoughts: This drive was a STEAL for the price. I use it as my primary Win7 drive, games run well, load times aren't bad at all, and none of the 'spin up' issues I've read about with some larger power efficiency drives. It's not the fastest thing on earth, but if you really want speed that bad, you should be looking at solid state drives anyways.
Worked great for about a month
- Pros: A large drive for the price. It arrived quickly and installed into my Mac Pro with ease.
- Cons: It just crapped out on me. I had been using it fine for a little over a month when it suddenly was no longer showing up as a drive (I had it installed as a third hard drive) and I tried everything to resolve the issue. After a bit of googling I have found that it's a somewhat common problem that Seagate claims they will take care of.
- Other Thoughts: I hope Seagate resolves this issue in a prompt manner because I had important data backed up onto this drive that I had yet to copy to another drive on account of not expecting a month old drive to fail.
Fast and roomy
- Pros: Big enough for now
- Cons: Should have waited until price dropped under a c note.
- Other Thoughts: Placed 2 in raid 1. Now I have a backup for everything. Only if they were portable.....
