3 out of 5 eggsnot the worst

Pros: it worked

Cons: died after about 5 years, 3/15/2011 to 4/24/2016

Other Thoughts: 5 years is a fairly long time, give it a shot

4 out of 5 eggsFinally failed

Pros: It has been a great reliable HDD - until now, BUT this drive was installed roughly 6 - 7 years ago. It had almost 39,000 operating hours on it when it finally failed. Bought another Seagate, although a ST2000DM001 this time. Hope it lasts as long as the one it's replacing.

Cons: S.M.A.R.T. monitoring did not warn me of an impending failure; although it is my fault for not knowing how to use the "smart" software. I didn't realize I needed a program to access the smart monitoring... thought it would pop up when something was going wrong... NOW I KNOW.

2 out of 5 eggsNotorious for Failing

Pros: Good Paperweight. Seagate Warranty was good at replacing them and then re-replacing them. I've literally had 14 fail on me within a couple years.

Cons: Notorious for Failing within the 5 year warranty. Get the 7200.12 revisions instead.

Other Thoughts: Would not recommend.

2 out of 5 eggsFine until it failed

Pros: It was nice having 1.5 TB of space - while it lasted.

Cons: The Seagate Barracuda drive died after using 5 yrs. 9 months. That's at least better than the two years reported by some other people. But I expect my hard drives to last as long as I own my computer. Actually, I normally would have upgraded/replaced my computer by now where I wouldn't have encountered this dead hard drive. But everything else in my desktop computer had been working fine where I didn't feel the need to replace anything. But now I'll be buying a new hard drive.

1 out of 5 eggsfailed

Pros: It was large enough to hold my stuff....

Cons: It's failing now after 3 years. It has the dreaded clicking noise. My other hard drive is 8 years old and doing just fine.

Other Thoughts: Do not buy this unless it's a temporary fix

2 out of 5 eggsNot worth the money

Pros: TONS of space.

Cons: It's not as quiet as you would expect this day and age.
It didn't seem as fast as described.
It's incredibly fragile. I bought it to build my PC and a few months later had to buy an SSD and use this one as backup (D drive to store some files, which I rarely did); and even months later, it started failing, making clucking noises and eventually stopped being detected intermittently. In other words, this drive can go from unused to unusable simply by having it plugged in.

The only thing I would recommend this drive would be to make a huge, one-a-year-backup, and still, I would advise you to look for a cheaper option.
I called Seagate and they told me they can recover the data in their lab, but it would cost me $599.99 do to it and it would not be guaranteed.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this if you want to live in peace.

1 out of 5 eggsI can haz anything but Seagate?

Pros: First inexpensive 1.5 tb drives.

Cons: You get what you pay for, apparently.
I had over 6 of these, and the 1 tb version in a WHS v1. All failed within few years, a few in warranty, most just outside it Only one gave me a SMART warning, the rest just stopped working, although I was able to clear most of them off before they totally failed. All the other brand drives that I tried later, Hitachi, Toshiba, Western Digital, and even "green" Seagates are all still working today.

Other Thoughts: Yes, I know I'm ranting about drives no longer sold, but my ST3000DM001 are busy failing in my WHS 2011, and ima gonna whine about it. (next review.)

3 out of 5 eggsMust know what you're getting into

Pros: Good value, good performance compared to other 7200rpm drives

Cons: Notoriously problematic
"Seeking" noise

Other Thoughts: The 7200's are notorious for problems so you have to be prepared. These drives were updated by seagate after their production due to on-board circuit problems (or so I read). To date I've purchased 6 total, but two of them were DOA and needed to be RMA'd for new ones. Yeah it's good to have spares, but your situation may be different.
