1 out of 5 eggsSegate ST31500341AS Junk

Pros: Cheep

Cons: DO NOT BUY THESE DRIVES IF YOU INTEND TO USE THEM IN A RAID! I'VE PURCHASED 8 OF THESE DRIVES AND USED 4 IN A RAID AND AFTER 2000 HRS THEY ARE ALL BAD AND FAILING.
I SET UP A RAID 10 HOPING TO NOT LOOSE IMPORTANT DATA USING THESE DRIVES AND SHOULD HAVE OPTED FOR A BETTER DRIVE. USING THEM FOR A STANDARD DATA DISK I'VE HAD THEM LAST 5000 HRS AND IN A RAID LESS THAN 2000 HRS. THE KILLER SEEMS TO BE HIGH FLY WRITES AND ONCE THEY START WATCH OUT.
THESE DRIVES HAVE BEEN KEPT COOL AND THEY SELDOM GET ABOVE 23 DEG C.

Other Thoughts: VERY DISAPPOINTED. 4 DRIVES FAILING AFTER 2000 HRS POWER ON TIME, 929 POWER ON COUNT

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Hard Drive

Pros: I've had this for about a year now without any problems. Passes all the test and formats quickly. Windows 7 WEI rates it at 5.9... however boot times are great.

Cons: The WEI score is lower than my other 7200 RPM machine and I'm unsure as to why. Still, I don't think I'd take that much into consideration.

Other Thoughts: Great deal and solid drive.

3 out of 5 eggsIt started making clicky noises and died after 4 years of use.

Pros: Lasted about 5 years. I bought it on 9/16/2008 and died on ~4/1/2013.

Cons: This hdd was my "backup" hdd that backed up my other dead drives. I now have no "backups" of my "backups" so I am angry. I can't recover any of my files because it doesn't get detected.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Drives

Pros: Work great in RAID 6 arrays.

Cons: They do eventually die.. Lost one in an array of 8, after it being on for 2 years, with constant use.

Other Thoughts: Bought 16+ of these for server use.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY

Pros: PRICE ONLY

Cons: PURCHASED TWO OF THESE HARD DRIVES. ONE DOA, OTHER CRASHED ONE WEEK AFTER WARRANTY EXPIRED. LOST 1.2TB OF DATA BUT LUCKILY MOST WAS BACKED UP. SPINDLE SHAFT MOTOR FAILED AND TOOK OUT ALL DATA WITH IT. PAID $175 TO HAVE THE DATA RECOVERED IN A CLEAN ROOM BY A REPUTABLE COMPANY. RECOVERY IMPOSSIBLE! WOULD NOT BUY ANOTHER SEAGATE. WESTERN DIGITAL MUCH MORE RELIABLE. JUST BOUGHT THREE, INCLUDING A 3TB FROM NEWEGG. NO PROBLEMS SO FAR.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed after two days use

Pros: I bought this drive in December, but I only put it into to use yesterday and today it is failing. Newegg says that they can´t give me an RMA because 30 days have passed and I know have to go to the manufacturer for warranty replacement. Way to go Newegg! That´s how you treat a good customer! B.T.W., I see that this unit has been discontinued, probably because of the piece of junk that it is. I shpould have suspected that there was a reason for the low Price.

Cons: What else can I say? It failed after two days. It's Junk!

Other Thoughts: It's easier for me to just junk the drive and buy a new one (not Seagate), than to go through the hassle of dealing with the manufacturer. Even though I bought it over 30 days ago, it's only been in use for the last two. Newegg should step up and RMA the unit.

1 out of 5 eggsA failed drive

Pros: Fortunately the drive was part of a RAID 1 set on a MAC G5

Cons: had multiple failures using the 750MB version in RAID 0. Played it safe this time by doubling the size and using RAID 1. Installed drives on Dec 5, one of them failed on Jan 12.

Other Thoughts: Going to see how well the Seagate warranty works
