3 out of 5 eggsNot Terrible

Pros: Lasted 5 years in a RAID with a 1 TB drive. Very reasonably priced (when it was purchased)

Cons: Shorter than expected product life

Other Thoughts: This is the first hard drive that's ever failed on me, but it's part of the first computer I built. So, it's pretty disappointing.

3 out of 5 eggsDied after three years

Pros: It works well when it is alive.

Cons: Hot, relatively short life

Other Thoughts: It died after 25932 hours (i.e. 1081 days) of use.
Thank goodness to its S.M.A.R.T., it warned before its death so I had the opportunity to back up. Its temperature is 45°C while the temperatures of other drives in the same case are below 40°C

4 out of 5 eggsGood, Fast, But Annoying Seek Noise

Pros: Fast

Cons: Seek noise

Other Thoughts: (This is for the 500GB version of this HD)
I got me one of these used and would otherwise have no reason to complain. The drive is fast..has 32MB of cache and well, does everything a HD is supposed to do.

However the seek noise, although faint and subtle drives me bonkers. I am not used to hearing HDs anymore (except from back in the early 90s) - I have two older Hitachi Deskstars in there which you can't hear at all so I am baffled about that those drives still have a seek noise that constantly reminds me about the drive being there. (I would prefer a constant motor or fan noise over a faint, but audible sudden seeking any day). By the way my drive is mounted on rubber grommets which is supposed to dampen noise...

I don't know whether the newer Barracudas (7200.12 etc.) still have this issue.

Mind you: These old 7200.11 Barracudas had a lot of issues so the first thing I did was updating the firmware to the latest SD1A.

Now, I have a number of 140mm fans and an air condition running right behind me, I am certainly not a "Quiet PC" enthusiast, not even remotely, but I can see this drive being not optimal for those who want a "real" quiet system.

Otherwise the drive is fine.

2 out of 5 eggsunreliable after 2 years of use

Pros: Excellent transfer speed for money rate.

Cons: - High BTU (Overheat more than WD HDD).

Seagate : 40 Celcius.
WD : 35 to 36
In the same environnement (Bay Drive).

- Many lost clusters after 2 years...

Other Thoughts: I test both Seagate and WD in a 4 year range :

- 4 Seagate ST31500341AS.
- 4 WD Red
- 4 WD Blue.
- 1 WD Velociraptor.
- 4 WD Blue.

Conclusion : WD is really better at long term mainly if your computer run 24/7. 0 lost cluster in all my WD drives. 2 of my seagates with the same time of use, 19952 lost cluster in my 1st mirror drive and 1954 in the other. (2 year of use)

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: Lots of space
Decent Speed

Cons: Started dying after a year of use.
SMART said it had 79% health and is now done to 54% with only around 300 days of power on time.

Other Thoughts: Second Seagate drive to go on me. Became a WD fanboy shortly after and never had to look back.

1 out of 5 eggsjust awful

Pros: It worked for a while...if you can consider that a "pro".

Cons: The first one lasted a few months... then it quit and I got a new one of the same model as an exchange...I should have just returned it. It took about a year before it started having hiccups...then staggered on for another 3 or so years before finally blowing up completely. Seagate lost my business from this experience.
