3 out of 5 eggsGot it for cheap and still feel ripped off. :P

Pros: Worked reliably for 4 years.
Was fast enough to stream HD videos from.

Cons: Failed in 4.5 years (click of death).
Performance started to degrade after about 3.75 years.
Warranty is only 2...

Other Thoughts: When SMART starts to report bad sectors, you have about 3 weeks to evacuate the drive before failure.

When it starts clicking, you will have lost a significant amount of data. I was fortune that I had backed up and only lost about 30 GB of replaceable files.

I think it's pathetic that a hard drive can't last 5 years or more. This is the first drive that I have ever bought new to fail in under 6 years. I have a Seagate 2 TB from about a year later that doesn't even have a single failed SMART test.

4 out of 5 eggsImpressive to start...longevity questionable

Pros: Fast and reliable

Cons: See Other Thoughts

Other Thoughts: Had 8 of these in a server spinning 24/7 since May 2009 in a home file server. As of July 2013, they've been failing one after the other.
Its a shame as I have a few 750GB models from an older server that are showing their age, but none have failed.

Been a Seagate fan for decades - now I'm a bit nervous about replacing these with 4Tb models.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great for 5 years running now

Pros: Still use this hard drive five years later and haven't had even a single S.M.A.R.T. status error on the hard drive, very happy with it.

Cons: No complaints.

3 out of 5 eggsNot sure...

Pros: It's holding what I put on it but it's by no means as fast and my prim.

Cons: It seems to take a while to load up. I don't know if this is normal or not, sometimes the games I have on it with steam get forgotten, until it goes to reinstalls, then find it.

Other Thoughts: It doesn't seem to be the same as my prim, if it seems to have to reload, it's the same speed, as my Prim, only 500 gb more?

2 out of 5 eggsHigh failure rate

Pros: Lasted for less then one year without bad sectors, at 8 months both drives got some bad sectors those were reassigned. went for a long time before getting more then after 2 years more frequent till message from operating system to backup due to probable failure. 2 drives within the same week same model

Cons: I placed that info in the pro because anytime drive(s). go out with users data, not to good . Its a good thing I do images of my data, working as a data proc manager and working in the field since early 70's. Anyone buying any of there drives even new ones please take the time to do backups. And to WD take more time in analyzing your product. Big company's do fold when its all about the money and not the Product.

2 out of 5 eggsBad sectors developed

Pros: Not a catastrophic failure. I was able to get all the data off safely.

Cons: I have 2 of these drives and both developed a couple bad sectors. Good thing it was before the warranty expired. Bad thing is that somehow one of the drives was an "evaluation version" (P/N ending in -900). Seagate declined to do a warranty replacement on that drive.

3 out of 5 eggsLuck of the draw

Pros: + Best price per GB (when purchased in Aug 2009)
+ Great sequential performance

Cons: * High failure rate (4/8 drive failures*)

*failures are not catastrophic, but decommissioned based on the recommendation of the smartctl reported data. 4 of the 8 drives encountered 1000 to 4000 reallocated sectors per the smart ctl stats.

Other Thoughts: I ran 7 of these drives in a linux raid 6 array running 24/7. Average temperature readings for the drives were approximately 28 to 34 degrees C as reported by the drive.

All drives were shipped with the CC1H firmware after some issues arose from various customers.

Data turnover was around 5-10GB/week, with a read-heavy sequential IO workload. of mostly sequential access (e.g. large video files)

Linux MD Stripes were set to 128KB chunks, so most disk IO would have been in 32 sector (x 4KB/sector) reads/writes.

1 of the 8 failed at the 3 year operating mark.
3 of the 8 failed at the 4 year 5 month mark.

I still have 4 that are running within the healthy threshold. 0,1,31,1 reallocated sectors. 1 failures was replaced with an identical 9VS4SQV6, the other 2 were replaced with a ST3000DM001 & ST3000VX000 versions which have about 6 months/2hours of spin time on them w/out issue. One drive is pending replacement as of 2013-12-07.

The 4 drives that failed had serials of:

The 4 still in commission are:
9VS2B9ZS (4 years, 9 months, 1day - 0 reallocated sectors)
9VS2AJN0 (4 years, 3 months, 25days - 1 reallocated sector)
9VS4SQV6 (1 year, 9 months, 6days - 31 reallocated sectors)
9VS2A5TW (4 years, 3 months, 25days - 1 reallocated sector)

It appears that the 9VS1xxxx batches of drives along with the early 9VS2Axxx all got within a smartctl recommended failure, while the other 9VS2A5xx and beyond are in excellent repair.

Though this is a limited sample set, drive reliability appears to be based on the luck and manufacturing conditions of various batches as I've experienced drive failures in arrays typically of the same batch.

Other readers, when buying lots of drives, try to purchase from diverse sources as to spread the risk of disk failure across multiple batches.
