2 out of 5 eggsNot Reliable

Pros: 500 GB is quite a good amount to back up entire laptops or use it as means to transport Video files from one system to another. It is very hard to fill even if using to rip DVDs the transfer data speeds are acceptable for a USB 2.0 connection. I was able to copy the image of my failing HDD and replace it with great success restoring My Windows Vista system to a new HDD without having to reinstall any application.

Cons: After working a little bit less than a month this drive stopped being visible in my computers. Literally I lost the data that was backed up there. Good news for me is that this was the back up, but my original data is still available. I sent this item for replacement with NEWEGG. A replacement it's on its way. NEWEGG rocks.

Other Thoughts: If you already purchased this device, be extra careful when handling it. If you have not, be extra curious on finding out how reliable other portable HDD work in the long run.

4 out of 5 eggsNice 500GB usb stick

Pros: No more power supply needed to activate external hard drives. This solid state drive is as convenient to port data as a usb stick. It fits in my shirt pocket and with 500gb of space it can literally back up any computer server in the blink of an eye.

Cons: I am forced to put something in this field, but I can't think of any cons.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great product, what can I say?? Small drive, stores 500gb which is plenty of space, only requires a USB adapter to power the drive

Cons: I have a USB hub and initially tried plugging the drive into the hub and it would not power on even though the hub has it's own power adapter. However, once I plugged directly to the pc, it powered up.

Other Thoughts: For people who have macs, don't blame the product, it works perfectly fine. I understand not everyone knows the difference between FAT32 and NTFS, but if you want the drive to work both in windows and macs, make sure the drive is formatted to FAT32 and not NTFS. There is no "drive" to get the drive to work properly on a mac, you just need to make sure its formatted properly.

1 out of 5 eggsUh...Mac Support?

Pros: Lightweight so it seems quite portable.

Cons: Read only on my wife's mac but works just fine on my PC.

Other Thoughts: So....bust this thing out to find that I can't drop files onto it using my wife's macbook. The drive is read only on the mac for some reason. Great, thanks. Nothing more logical than a backup hard drive being read only. Looks like I can format it somehow but now I need to research how to do that on the mac because I don't use macs. There should be something about this in the product specs.

1 out of 5 eggsVery Slow External

Pros: I've bought several Seagate HDDs before, and usually the end result isn't positive. This one was my first non-WD in years, and of course, I probably should have stuck to my instincts on this purchase. Aside from the negatives, the drive has purpose...the light that shines through the design on top is nice-looking but will, of course, cause unwanted heat. Through the software on the drive (as well as through the website), you can turn this off, and the GUI interface is very easy to use, although seemingly overkill for a hard drive at times...assuming the drive worked fine, I would have given this drive 5 stars because nothing else but the below bothered me.

Cons: I've owned my fair share of hard drives... as well as externals...I usually don't prefer USB 2.0 drives due to speed issues but this one is BEYOND poor. I usually go eSata or direct-sata, but for some reason this drive moves EXTREMELY slow. I'm talking 0.50 - 1.0 mb/s transfers. I simply do not understand what the reasoning behind this is, but it took appx. an hour to move a 4.5gb dvd-rip of one of my hundreds of DVDs to the drive ONLY to fail at 99.9%...imagine the time it would take to move even 1/3 of the collection if it even worked...just obscene. I'm not heartbroken as I did buy this from a local retail store (WM) and will get my money back, but its just the fact that I was putting faith back into Seagate and they let me down again...

Other Thoughts: I do take particular interest in writing mostly good reviews here on Newegg since I hate being "that guy", but I felt it necessary to get this off my chest. Maybe I was also one of the many unlucky computer users who got a dud on the first buy...I will not take the chance to find out. Returning this for a WD MyPassport 500gb, hopefully that won't let me down which WD usually doesn't (unless the drive is shipped USPS)...
