2 out of 5 eggsShort Life

Pros: Works, had it just over 5 years

Cons: Hard drive is loud, runs hot, and has began clicking (which means it going to die soon). Just outside the warranty so I'm probably stuck with a dead HDD.

Other Thoughts: I always thought highly of Seagate and I still due. Its probably older technology and I'll have better luck with a new model. Its just costly disappointment that the HDD didn't last very long.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Reliable External HDD

Pros: Vast space, reliability, great overall HDD

Cons: The data transfer rate after a couple years use seems to lagg some, but overall still better than most. The 2.0 USB capability versus the newer HDD's with 3.0 capability, it obviously is slower.

Other Thoughts: If you take care of the HDD properly (defragmentation, cooler and dry space, don't drop it, etc) it will be a great external HDD for at least the 5 year warranty that it comes with.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: The space at the time

Cons: Fails after 2 years of use and gives no warring when it's about to fail. I had to learn it from the hard way. Lost all my data on it.

1 out of 5 eggsBack it up now!!!

Pros: Fine while it lasted but that was not nearly long enough.

Cons: Overall, very poor. I waited too long to realize that there was a problem and failed to back up my files. Only hope that I can get it to fire up long enough to recover some of them. Runs too hot which lead to it's demise.

Other Thoughts: Think twice about buying another Seagate, if they let something this bad get by it can certainly happen again. Just lost confidence in them.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: I've had my seagate now for about 6 months and it works wonderfully. I had bought a different drive to back up my new computer and within 1 day the smartware disappeared along with my back up and photos that can't be replaced. I also have another 100 gig drive from seagate that is 10 years old and still going as strong as the day I bought it. I will never buy another drive from any other company. P.S. the internal drive on my old computer died, that also was not a seagate. For my new computer I went and bought a new internal from seagate as well .

Cons: NONE!!!!!!!

Other Thoughts: Smartware Is Stupidware !!!! Buy This !!!

5 out of 5 eggsStill working like a champ

Pros: It's been working fine under heavy usage for over 6 months. My 1TB Seagate HD has been working fine for 2 years. Maybe I got lucky?

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I think this drive is being discontinued. The large, evil brick and mortar store is selling them on clearance...for cheaper than the 1TB version.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible failure rates

Pros: Looks cool, the best paper weight so far. Great marketing promises

Cons: Dies and clicks more then it does anything else. Great at loosing all your data

Other Thoughts: I have been having problems with this whole series of drives for about a year now. A 1TB just died instantly one day. Another 1TB has been clicking for a few weeks now (been RMA'd). Bought a new 1.5TB at Costco and moved the data to it for a week when it started clicking also. I exchanged it, same thing happened after some time. I called Seagate Support a few times and they are very good listeners, but the only suggestions they have is take it back to the store or send it to us. At this point they are becoming like Microsoft used to answer tech support "reboot and see what happens". On top of that Seagate is charging for tech support now to tell you to take it back to the store. Something is really wrong with Seagate now; it's become a really poor service and technology company.

1 out of 5 eggsClick, click, click.....

Pros: Newegg is the best!

Cons: As soon as the system starts recognizing external drives during boot, click click, boot stops. Click. Click click, the drive finally figures out what it is, a hard drive (after a minute or so). boot continues. Click click click....The drive is still in windows explorer, but I can't access it, click click, after a minute or so it comes alive, still clicking. Trying to copy a large file to DVD, click click, it hangs up explorer for a couple of minutes still clicking. I get tired of waiting for it to figure out its a hard drive again and unplug it. This drive is a total waste of cash. I regret ever spending the money for it. I was actually on the site to buy a replacement for it and saw it still listed for sale. If you don't mind constant frustration with one of the poorest designed drives ever made, buy this one.

Other Thoughts: How Seagate could let this one through is a mystery. They have known about this problematic drive since shortly after release, but still produce it. As many, many other reviewers on this site and others have stated, I'll never buy another Seagate drive.

5 out of 5 eggsAin't no rest for the wicked

Pros: Large capacity. Decent transfer speeds. Attractive appearance. Easy to connect. Easily detected by OS.

Cons: Sketchy lifespans.

Other Thoughts: Nearly all external drives have DC power! Get over it. Plan on losing roughly 10% of advertised storage. NO hard drive made is capable of using 100%

I have owned at least 10 Seagate external drives in the past 6 years, and I will continue to own them.
