The Seagate Advantage

By now the world knows that Seagate Barracuda 7200 drives, from the world's premier storage provider, deliver years of reliable service and high performance. This is a product family that has been strengthened and refined over 11 generations. It embodies the highest levels of reliability, performance and capacity. And this latest generation marks the single largest capacity jump in the more than half-century history of hard drives-a half-terabyte increase from the previous high of 1 TB, thanks to the capacity-boosting power of perpendicular magnetic recording technology.

The drive is also available in capacities of 1 TB and 750, 640, 500, 320 and 160 GB. With its amazingly wide range of capacities and configurations, the Barracuda 7200.11 drive is an ideal choice for mainstream PCs, performance PCs, gaming machines and workstations, even desktop RAID and external storage devices.

2 out of 5 eggsGot 2, one died

Pros: Good price at the time, got 2 to set up in RAID 1 configuration for data redundancy.

Cons: After just a couple of months started getting error messages that the Mirroring RAID was not happy. Now machine won't boot. RAID Scanning drives ............ Warning, you have a hardware problem. Couldn't even get to BIOS or boot from CD to run SpinRite. Disconnected drives one at a time, and with the bad one disconnected machine booted right up from the SSD Boot drive. Can not even get to BIOS with just the bad drive connected.

Other Thoughts: I think I am through getting Refurbished Hard Drives. I assumed that from Seagate they would replace any bad controller cards and such, and make sure they were in good condition before sending them out, but people have been having a high failure rate with this particular model, so something is bad with the controller, firmware (Perhaps NSA Modification to firmware did it), or something else is wrong with this model. I've had good luck with Seagate over the years, but no more Refurbished drives for me.

1 out of 5 eggsShort Life Span

Pros: None

Cons: Drive was purchased 6/15/2014 and bellyed up on 10/7/2014, so the warranty was up 3 weeks ago. Pays ya money a, I guessnd takes ya chances, I guess. Have seen more Seagate drives crash way earlier than any other I have tried. Guess I will have the fun of trying to get any files from the drive. I didn't expect 4-5 years, but expected at least a couple. Would,t recommend these drives to anyone.

Other Thoughts: They don't make them like they used to.

2 out of 5 eggsDo not recommend

Pros: Not too expensive

Cons: The first one I bought was dead on arrival so I had to RMA it. I then got the new one and it worked up until today 10/2/2014 and again is dead.

1 out of 5 eggsSeagate: Great company but bad Hard Drive

Pros: Great Company.

Cons: Work with EMC who use Seagate drives. I've seen them put through rigorous testing. So it was a surprise to get a faulty drive. After about a month of use, the drive failed and data was lost.

Other Thoughts: Would like Seagate to replace drive.

1 out of 5 eggsPiece of Junk. Zero Eggs!

Pros: Worked for a month.

Cons: After one month it would not boot up.

Other Thoughts: I have never written a review in my life, but this product absolutely disgusted me to the point of doing so. I will never buy another seagate product in my life.

1 out of 5 eggs2 out of 3 Failure Rate

Pros: The concept of buying a 1TB HDD for $40 (was priced 50% off of listed price of $79.99) is great. That's about the only positive.

Cons: I purchased 3 of these and within 2 months 2 of them have failed. I understood the "risk" involved with purchasing refurbished gear, no matter how much a vendor will claim otherwise. However, 2 out of 3 of the drives have failed in less than 60 days and that isn't even an accurate metric because I haven't opened or installed the third HDD. I have a feeling that if I attempt to use the 3rd HDD I'll encounter a 100% failure rate in the 3 HDDs in under 60 days.

I don't know who to blame, either. This is the second time I've been disappointed with a Newegg refurb; the first was a MacBook Pro which was misrepresented (the version of OS X installed was not the version listed in the description) and all of the screws were loose the held the chassis together. I only discovered it because they screws *fell out*.

I digress. I also purchased the "1 Year Extended Replacement Plan" for each drive, which was called a Refurb Replacement Plan when they sold it to me during checkout. So far, Newegg is claiming that the 3 warranties I purchased are actually from a 3rd party vendor and that I'll have to contact them directly. Nowhere was this information presented to me when I purchased the warranty or I most likely wouldn't have bought into it.

Other Thoughts: I don't think I'll ever buy another refurbished product from Newegg and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else, either. I'm also on the verge of taking my business elsewhere and no longer *ALWAYS* recommending Newegg to anyone who asks me where I buy computer parts and peripherals.

1 out of 5 eggsWhat a mistake

Pros: None other than it wasnt DoA

Cons: Hard drive failed after less than 3 full months of use. It intermittently crashes, has trouble starting up, I have no idea what I was thinking buying a HD from one of the least reliable HD manufacturers in the industry let alone a refurbished model from them. It wont be a mistake I'll make twice.

1 out of 5 eggsDo Not Buy

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Reliablility

Other Thoughts: The first one I received had the "tick of death" and prevented my computer from booting at all. Newegg replaced it quickly and easily. The second one, now a month old, is failing. SMART lists the health at 5% with 176 uncorrectable sectors. Hopefully Seagate will take care of me, but I'm not holding my breath...

3 out of 5 eggsclick click click click click

Pros: newegg's RMA is good. The new drive works well and snappy.not loud at all.

Cons: First drive just clicked . I know its a refurb. but its a refurb. it should work.sadly mine just clicked

Other Thoughts: I'm not to mad about having to RMA newegg does a good , but DOA's happen .. i just hope the drive last for a few years. i only bought it used because I'm not going to put any sensitive files/pic/doc's on it. just Steam games .and if the drive goes bad then o well .. I can just re-download the games .

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Value!

Pros: Great all around drives! Can't beat the price!

Cons: Require formatting/partitioning prior to use

Other Thoughts: Bought 2 of these refurbished drives and I couldn't be happier! After formatting and partitioning worked great. It was a flashback to the past to actually have to format and partition a new drive, but after that little delay, everything works great! Kind of surprising they don't apply a quick format at the refurb center, but it was only a minor hassle.
