3 out of 5 eggsI/O Errors after 2 yrs 6 months

Pros: Runs fairly quiet and low power consumption on Mac

Cons: Mysterious I/O Errors and freeze ups after a little over 2 years service. Caused numerous file transfer crashes. SMART reports the drive as ok but it started making clunking noises and caused my system to freeze in 15 minute cycles. Check of the logs showed I/O errors at the same time of the freeze. Ran multiple tests on the drive and everything looks good. Fortunately I had a second drive on this system and was able to switch boot to it and all is running well on the secondary drive.

Other Thoughts: I'm going to try another one just for the sake of keeping my system uniform. Hopefully this one won't crash so soon. I can't stress enough the need for a backup.

2 out of 5 eggsDo not expect to last past warranty date

Pros: Ran well for 2 years

Cons: Frequent read/write errors and BSOD just 4 months after the warranty expires. Within one afternoon, the computer crashed twice and I had save errors reported

Other Thoughts: It seems to be only on the windows partition that has trouble. I also run linux and there are never problems when running that (not sure if it simply handles those issues better but it seems there is one damaged part of the drive).

Guess they know what they are doing when the put a warranty date on a product. Too bad these are not as reliable as other brands.

2 out of 5 eggsDrive failed in 15 months

Pros: Cheap price
Good speed
Lots of storage
Decent warranty service

Cons: Drive failed in 15 months. Unrecoverable read errors. Can't even get it to work long enough to back up important data.

Other Thoughts: Technically covered by the Warranty but people I share the computer with aren't comfortable sending their data way so we're just going to eat the cost, but that's not really Seagate's fault.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Does everything it is supposed to do, and nothing it isn't.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Drive is installed as the boot drive in a Dell Inspiron 1720 for around 2 years or so. It gets regular use and works as expected with good performance.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Hard Drive

Pros: This hard drive has been excellent. Dramatically increased overall speed of my 2008 Macbook Pro. My machine still keeps up with many of the newer model laptops today despite being 4 years old.

Cons: None
