5 out of 5 eggsFast drive, large formatted capacity....

Pros: 7200 rpm's, formatted capacity, high buffer rate.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Exactly why I always purchase Seagate...High percentage of formatted to advertised capacity, well built, long lasting, fast and quiet.

1 out of 5 eggs3 Failed So Far

Pros: Typical hard drive

Cons: High failure rate

Other Thoughts: I bought 4 of these drives and put them in a RAID10 array. So far, in almost a year that I've been using it, 3 of the 4 have died. So far, the refurb drives I get back after RMA'ing the dead ones work.

If you have a problem, you need to pay a $19.99 "Advance Replacement" fee which is a big scam. Otherwise, you need to send back the old drive in an approved box before they'll send you a new one. That's not a warranty when I can buy a new one for double the cost.

I've switched back to WD again.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: Great drive. Absolutely no issues.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Take note, however, that hard drives are basically hit and miss. They either arrive DOA or fully working for the most part. Part of the reason is due to the bubble wrap it is packaged in and the recycled brown paper they use as packaging peanut- replacement in the boxes now. But the wrapping seems to have gotten better, so the drives tend to come working more than they used to.

5 out of 5 eggsFast Drive

Pros: Powers up using a single USB cable in an external enclsure
fast transfers and relatively quiet

Cons: The max amp of .7 is higher then other drives, but it runs off USB so I guess it never needs that much power

Other Thoughts: The difference using this drive in a USB / eSATA enclosure was night and day. eSATA took 7 minutes while USB took 45 minutes. This may have something to do with firmware or some other drive feature.

Pros: plug in play in XP pro 32 bit. Service pack 3. Formatted, assigned drive. Labeled drive Media, and then away I go. Cost per Gig very acceptable. got free shipping and paid Thirty five.

Cons: wish mobo had faster Sata transfer rates.

Other Thoughts: read & write on par with my Sata 2 limitations

1 out of 5 eggsAnother one DOA

Pros: Haven't had a chance to find out yet. But I'm hoping the next on will work.

Cons: DOA. Causes BIOS to freeze during device detection. Tried on second PC with similar problem. BIOS hangs for about 10 minutes then shows 0 Bytes on device.

Other Thoughts: Should have paid more attention to what others said about the high number of DOAs on this device. Thought I'd get lucky nu I guess not.

Pros: i got this pretty much for free in a combo, its a decent size with a good speed

Cons: this is my second hard drive that i got from newegg...
the first sounded like it had sand in it
and this one, the second, u can hear it scratching the disk or something inside when u turn it about

Other Thoughts: not really a review, but i keep getting weird hard drives -.-, and i dont feel like waiting a couple days for a replacement

2 out of 5 eggsSeagate has just stopped trying

Pros: The fastest HD in the 7200rpm category, makes other HD's look like snails. The density of these platters is unmatched. which means higher transfer rates, especially on video. while in the spec sheet it says 125mb/s the max is really like 160mb/s on large consecutive tranfers. Heck 5 years ago I couldn't get that from my raid array. If it wasn't for the seek time this drive could beat alot of ssd's

Cons: Problem is that the failure rate on seagate drives is just to big these days, I dunno but I should have opted for the 410 version which is enterprise class, however this one had a $15 coupon so I ended up spending 50 bucks on a drive with a 3 year warranty. I dunno if I'll ever buy a seagate again, let's see how the replacement holds up.

Other Thoughts: Newegg should talk to seagate since this adds to their cost as well.

1 out of 5 eggsAnother dud

Pros: 500 GB hard drive. Would be much better if it worked.

Cons: First it gave me an error while partitioning the new drive. Downloaded and ran Seatools and determined that the drive was bad. Returning it to Seagate under warranty.

Other Thoughts: Not sure if I should have gone through Seagate or Newegg for the replacement. Either way, you're paying for return shipping. Seagate insists that you pack the drive a certain way when you return it. I was fortunate that I had a box from an old drive that seemed to meet their requirements. I'm hoping for the best on the replacement drive.

This is my second faulty product from Newegg in two consecutive orders. The last one was a DOA power supply. What's the deal??? I'm not saving any money if I spend it on return shipping on this stuff.

5 out of 5 eggsSo Far So Good

Pros: Just bought this drive so I can only comment on the initial receiving and testing.

Ordered on Monday and received it on Wednesday (Free Shipping IL) which was very nice. Very well packaged, antistatic bag, bubble wrap, smaller box inside a larger box packed with paper.

Formatted the drive in just over an hour, fantastic! Ran a few read tests which gave an average of 127 MB/s and coming from SATA 1.5 of 70Mb/s this made me grin (I seldom upgrade so its always a nice boost when I do).

Read speeds are misleading on any drive, so I wouldn't really base that on your purchase decision.

The drive is very quiet and does the job perfectly, so far. Oh and it came with the latest firmware.

Cons: Non as yet but if any problems arise I will add another review, if no problems arise I will still make another 6 month review.

Other Thoughts: MB Gigabyte P35 DS3R

It was a coin toss between this and the Caviar Green 500. I am glad I chose the Seagate, I don't like auto throttling hardware, whether that be voltage or speed, I want brute force available at all times.

Pros: Worked fine straight out of the box. Next day delivery, eggcellent! :)

Cons: None thus far...

Other Thoughts: I purchased two of the drives to setup a RAID 0 configuration. I was quite weary after reading the reviews, and I do hope for no RMAs etcetera. Seagate Disk Wizard worked fine. I've had no problems thus far (fingers crossed).

5 out of 5 eggsDOA not always DOA

Pros: All five HDDs eventually (SEE BELOW) passed full-house SeaTools diagnostic testing with jumpers set to SATA 1.5 GB/s mode for use in WIN XP Pro DDR environment. Once in use, all five functioned just like all Seagate products have worked for me since the mid-1980s - perfectly.

Cons: Once squared away, no squawks.

Other Thoughts: Two out of five HDDs appeared DOA when first attempting full-house SeaTools diagnostic testing with my own scrap-pile jumpers set to SATA 1.5 GB/s. Those two had over-height jumper blocks that prevented proper seating in the SATA external dock; trimming 1/16" off top of those two blocks resulted in total joy on all five HDDs.

3 out of 5 eggsFailure after 1 year

Pros: Good performing and quiet drive for a relatively moderate use home PC.

Cons: 1 of 2 drives in my parents PC failed after 1 year and 1 week. Of course the Dell they came in only had a 1 year warranty.

Other Thoughts: I'm using two of these drives in a RAID1 configuration. I ordered a replacement from NewEgg only because I prefer to keep my RAID configuration discs the same exact model. Otherwise, I would not be ordering a Seagate drive. Much prefer Western Digital for being quiet, energy efficient, and reliable. Thank goodness for RAID1, replacement was a snap!

Pros: easy to install and setup with online help from seagate.

Cons: the item went bad after a few days with an error "SMART event." research revealed that new SeaGate hard drives have a high rate of returns. I learned this after-the-fact. Bought a Western Digital from New Egg and hope this will be a better choice.

4 out of 5 eggsSeagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB

Pros: Really fast for a 7200RPM drive. Single platter design. Newegg had it packed well enough for me.

Cons: See other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: I had some problems installing Win7 64-bit via DVD. I'm not sure if it was the DVD drive or the HDD but I'm sure it was this drive. It would install 32-bit fine, but I had to go buy 4GB flash drive at Walmart for $10 to finish off my computer. That's why I knocked off an egg.

Just something to think about.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: Inexpensive, easy to install, quiet, fast. Mine shipped with the new firmaware (7200.12) already installed. Got it in less than 24 hours.

Cons: Not so much a con as a heads-up: this is a bare drive: get a cable. You'll also need software to transfer your existing drive if you plan on replacing or switching your hard drives.

Other Thoughts: After looking at a bunch of freeware to copy my old drive, I smartened up and downloaded Seagate's DiscWizard program from their site. Worked flawlessly. I switched the boot order in the BIOS after copying and away it went.

Pros: Works perfectly fine and fits easily into my case. Computer quickly recognized it and I was able to put my old files right back on it.

As with all hard drives, remember to have the proper cables BEFORE ordering.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Reading all of these negative reviews makes me nervous, however a lot of the Western Digital drives also have negative reviews. With that being said I have not had any problems. I did flash this drive with the latest firmware from seagates website which gave me about a 10% boost in read speed. Unfortunately seagate is secretive about what fixes are in their firmware updates which leads me to believe they are hiding something. I am running the Western digital caviar black at work and the performance between the two seem to be exactly the same.

Cons: None so far.

3 out of 5 eggsIts a Maxtor..I mean a Seagate.

Pros: Small foot print. large size.. 500 gb. and pretty fast access times. The price is great and you get what you pay for.

Cons: Its not an older Seagate.
Formatting may be hard.
Be sure TO NOT DO a fast format on this drive. Do the slow one and order a few pizza's and eat it with 5 of your friends and watch a movie while it is formatting. You will have plenty of time.. But after that it is smooth sailing.

Other Thoughts: Its not that bad.. Really.. I just thought that when they took over maxtor they would throw away everything and make it all Seagate again.. Instead it is almost as if the opposite is true. Overall It is a good Drive. I would buy it again but it's not old Seagate quality.

2 out of 5 eggsSeagate lemons and lack of responsibility

Pros: The drive luckily lasted for two years.
I bought the drive because it had good specs.

Cons: The drive had bad firmware, and Seagate won't take responsibility if it's an OEM drive ("Bare Drive" = OEM).

So many Seagate ST3500320AS are lemons.
It's a known documented problem.
The drive is defective from the manufacture.
But even no they admit this, they refuse to take responsibility and fix OEM drives.
Furthermore, they could have taken more responsibly by simply mailing everyone (who gave address by sending warranty card, or could have told Newegg to send them) a simple postcard to upgrade the firmware ASAP.

They could have saved countless thousands of their customers from lost data, lost time to go fix a bricked drive, etc.

Think twice about buying a Seagate now.

Other Thoughts: Okay, it's a slightly different drive number but the same specs.
But of course you can't write a review for it as it's "discontinued".
This is just a warning about Seagate drives.

5 out of 5 eggsGet updated Firmware

Pros: Small, fast, quiet

Cons: Make sure to get the upgraded firmware

Searthe the seagate website for Barracuda 7200.12 Firmware Update [213891]

Other Thoughts: My computer has been laggins for months.. probably since I bought this hard drive. I ran HDTUNE which showed TERRIBLE transfer rates... I realized I have version CC34 of the firmware.. the latest is CC46.. my drive went from an average transfer rate of 25 MB/s to 133 MB/s with the new firmware. NO JOKE..

1 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely a waste of money

Pros: It was cheap, easy to install, and worked fine for a month

Cons: It died a day or two after the warranty expired..... essentially making it a paperweight.

Other Thoughts: If I could give this no stars I would, Seagate obviously does not care about quality and durability because as soon as the warranty expired the harddrive failed. After attempting to get a refund or replacement from Seagate, they told me I needed to pay a 45 dollar fee plus shipping and taxes in order to return it. COMPLETE waste of money

5 out of 5 eggsFast and cheap

Pros: It arrived packaged in bubble wrap and an anti-static bag. The drive seems to be pretty speedy and although it's not too special, it's about half as thick as a regular drive (but is still the same form factor). It scores a 5.9 in Windows 7 (like that means anything) and the drive is silent in my case.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: We'll see as time goes on whether this is one of Seagate's good drives or not. So far though it looks like it's going to turn out to be a good little budget hard drive for a budget box.

3 out of 5 eggsTwo DOA drives

Pros: They were on sale at NewEgg for $40 per 500 GB drive, with free shipping. Awesome price!

Cons: Both drives arrived DOA. (I've filed an RMA request.)

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these in the same order. They arrived on my NC doorstep (via Eggsaver/UPS 3-day) in a rather battered box, but the contents appeared to be intact and undamaged. However, both drives are completely dead, unrecognized by BIOS. When first powered up, they make a faint buzzing sound every ~2 seconds for a while, then go silent.

I gave em a three-rating instead of lowest-possible because I am charitably assuming that they were damaged by rough treatment during shipment, rather than defective when shipped.

3 out of 5 eggsa gamble

Pros: Cheap for the speed and space

Cons: I ended up getting a 2nd one here which is this review because my first one went bad within 2 months out of the blue. smart gave me a error for bad sectors and no programing i ran or how many times i fully reformatted it nothing worked. the only way i could even see the drive was with a bootcd of seatools other than that even HDD dock had a hard time showing. just would freeze my computer once powered on.

Other Thoughts: i ended up doing RMA with seagate which was a pain, first they didn't have the S/n so i got on chat and told the agent. he made me take a picture to verify it was right and than still wants me to pay S/h to get the drive to TX for a replacement... seagate this is the first drive to go bad on me that wasn't DOA. I still have an old 20gb working just fine so whats up? i suggest you avoid seagate for a while unless you are willing to lose your data

3 out of 5 eggsInexpensive, great performance... but reliability is questionable.

Pros: Inexpensive... Great drives while they worked... Their website is easy to use in terms of warranty validation and RMA.

Cons: In the past, I have set up 3 RAID-0 Stripe setups with these drives with Intel Matrix, nVidia Mediashield, and AMD 790GX controllers. Two of three setups have had a drive fail... the Intel setup at 3 months with SMART failure, no longer able to boot Windows(not backed up, all data was lost), and the nVidia setup at 16 months with a SMART failure notice, followed by repetitive lockups of the PC(my personal system, which had the data backed up in time). The AMD based RAID hasn't had a drive fail so far at 7 months, but it's just a matter of when :/ Risky when you don't have a backup setup. Seagate now has the customer pay to ship the drive back for RMA.

Other Thoughts: With any mechanical HDDs, it's important to have a backup setup to protect your data. My personal system has 2 7200.12 drives in stripe, so for backup, I have a WD GP 1TB drive. Windows 7 has a built-in option to create a system image of your logical drive(s), which I use about once a week. With devices, there's always a chance of failure, but Seagate's newer drives seem to be very unreliable. Their older drives seem more solid. I won't buy anymore Seagate drives as I have also had other problems with their products. If you decide to get these, don't be surprised if they fail prematurely. Have your data backed up on a regular basis. I'll keep using my other working drive along with the replacement until I fill them up... after that, it's back to WD.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding Value

Pros: Great Drives!
Here is a HD Tune benchmark on 2 of these drives in raid 0 array using the 9.6.0.1014 version of Intel's Rapid Storage Manager software on my 5 year old 965 system.

HD Tune: Intel Raid 0 Volume Benchmark

Volume : SeaRaid12
Transfer Rate Minimum : 173.4 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Maximum : 267.0 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Average : 247.0 MB/sec
Access Time : 8.7 ms
CPU Usage : 9.0%

Huge improvement over the 2x 500GB Barracuda 7200.10 Raid 0 array It replaced.

Volume : SeaRaid10
Transfer Rate Minimum : 107.2 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Maximum : 142.1 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Average : 125.7 MB/sec
Access Time : 11.1 ms
CPU Usage : 7.1%

Bought 2 more of these drives today. I want to see if a 4 drive raid 0 can break the 500 MB/sec mark.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: System Stats: 2.4 Ghz E6600 Core2Duo, Intel DG965WH ( ICH8R ), Superclocked eVGA 8800 GT 512, 3 GB Kingston DDR2-800, and Xp Pro Sp3 .

1 out of 5 eggsD O A

Pros: Price when I bought it was $40.

Cons: It's supposed to be 3.5 inch, but it's less than that, but larger than a 2.5" laptop drive. Mine is DOA.

Other Thoughts: I bought this on sale and didn't open it until 6 weeks later, today, and it's DOA. Since it's past 30 days, I have to talk with Seagate. With SSD price drops just around the corner, manufacturers are probably dumping all of their old stock at low prices, so I expect more DOA. I will check mine upon arrival from now on.

Pros: Pirce was right.

Cons: DOA on the first HD received, requested RMA and received the 2nd one that my PC can recognize the drive. But the RMA $10.00 shipping was added to the overall cost of the HD, :( Only wish it was not DOA the first time.

4 out of 5 eggsOne down, one to go?

Pros: Cheap, silent, cool and pretty fast...

Cons: Bought two of these, one @ newegg and another from a retailler in town; retailer one had 4000 bad sectors after 36 hours... Retailer reimbursed me no questions asked. The Newegg one is still running strong after a full month of 24/24h use.

Other Thoughts: Seing all the bad comments on these drives (V12) and the older revisions made me think twice about buying Seagate again; my next purchase is a 5y waranteed WD black.... Still giving 4 stars because of the no hastle return.

Pros: I have had several in both 24/7 & normal operation for over 9-months, no failures. They are quiet & cool. As fast or faster than other HDD's this size. I have been using Seagate since the 1970's, before the PC in DEC systems, Seagate has always been the "Gold Standard" of Storage for Professionals.

Cons: Not free, not 500TB, not faster than SSD's.

Other Thoughts: Get over the old firmware problems that existed 2-generations ago (7200.10), that is old history. Seagate is back on top where they have been for the past 40yrs!

1 out of 5 eggsWhy can't Seagate make drives that don't die?

Pros: They work initially...

Cons: Most Seagate drives, including this one, fail consistently. First they accumulate "reallocated sectors" and finally they just die. I hate to say I haven't seen a Seagate drive live beyond a year. And I've seen quite a few...

2 out of 5 eggsBe prepared for failure

Pros: It worked fine for 15 months. Not loud, average speed.

Cons: It crapped out for no reason at 15 months. No warning signs, just gone. The computer just shut off, and upon rebooting said it config file was missing/corrupt. After trying the repair console and other methods it can't even read the MBR. Fixboot doesn't read it either and chkdsk reports unrecoverable errors. I'll not buy a seagate again.

Other Thoughts: When buying a hard drive, go for quality rather than saving $20.

5 out of 5 eggsStill working - No problems

Pros: One of the fastest drives in this class. No problems thus far, drive performs quite well. This is not a - 7200.11 Drive
The ST3500418AS IS A 7200.12 drive and does not have the firmware issues that the7200.11 drive had.

Cons: None yet. I'll see if it lasts the course.

Other Thoughts: Tech support at Seagate and Western Digital are all about the same - fair to poor - you get little from tech support at any large OEM. Unless you are Dell or HP - don't expect instant gratification!

5 out of 5 eggsIt's a hard drive.

Pros: -It didn't die on me during the 24 hours I got to use the computer before having to RMA the ram
-It doesn't seem too loud over the dual 100+cfm fans I have
-It loads up windows pretty fast (About 40 seconds from post to desktop?)
-It was cheap.

Cons: -It should probably have had the model renamed to something like x500-7200 since the 7200.11 is terrifying in failure rates.

Other Thoughts: If you really trust hard drive reviews from people who have owned them for a week, that worries me. I haven't even started putting this thing through its paces.

1 out of 5 eggsHard Drive Not Recognized On Windows 7 Install

Pros: I can't think of one.

Cons: WARNING: Do not use a Seagate drive for your Windows 7 install. Many Seagate drives (despite their flouted compatibility) will not be recognized by Windows 7, despite being recognized in the BIOS.

Google the problems yourself...

"Seagate Hard Drive not recognized Windows 7"

After pulling my hair out for two days talking to Microsoft and Seagate tech support, I had enough... I bought a Western Digital drive and Windows 7 installed without a hiccup.

The Seagate drive passed all diagnostic checks performed on a second computer, and seems to function fine as a secondary drive -- it just doesn't work as a primary drive for an OS install.

I won't buy a Seagate drive ever again.

2 out of 5 eggsDiscouraging pattern

Pros: Ran great, quiet, quick (ssd withstanding). Boots on my system were consistently under 40sec even with a handful of applications.

Cons: It's been 15months without even a hiccup then my computer fails to boot, intermittent clicking from the drive. Managed to get it to boot, all seatools tests pass but still serious issues with read speed and intermittent failures.

Other Thoughts: I came back to this page to just order a new one but all the recent reviews and my experience is a bit concerning so I'll be shopping around some more.

1 out of 5 eggszero quality

Pros: The original ones had a 5 year warranty; these 3 year;

Cons: FAILED in less than a week. Bought 2 to use in a RAID 1 config- to replace a previous Segate (about a year old) that FAILED. Lots of luck.

Other Thoughts: The quality of these Seagate drives has gone to ZERO. I bought about 15 of them for new builds about 1 1/2 years ago, because I thought the quality would be good since they carried a 5 year warranty then. WRONG. At least 50% have failed since then. I have switched to WD BLACK, but the problem is the Intel MB (975) does not recognize the WD 640GB Black as even being there for the RAID, so I chanced buying more Seagates to continue the RAID 1 array. BAD idea- will now rebuilt WIN without RAID as a result. No more SEAGATE!

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: Price, Free Shipping, NewEgg Support

Cons: I've been building with Seagate Drives for years. They used to be reliable, high quality drives, but, not anymore! I can't believe the number of problem drives I've had come back at me in the past couple months. Bad sectors, "flakey" drives that, intermittently, fail to boot, electronic failures, all on drives less than a year old. I've spent twelve years building my reputation, and these drives are making me look bad, especially when a customer has failures on a drive that was recently replaced. It's not just the 500 GB drives either. I've had problems with 160 GB, 250's, and 500's. I just can't afford the time, shipping costs, and inconvenience to my customers anymore. No more Seagate drives for me!

Other Thoughts: I RMA'd one that was defective right out of the box. Notated that it was brand new and that I wanted a new replacement. The sent me a recertified drive. I was plenty upset. I can't use a refurb in a new build, so, as far as I'm concerned, the warranty is useless if that's their policy.

Other Thoughts: I bought 6 of these in the fall of 09 for a new small business server and backup system. As of June 2010 three of the drives are already bad. Two have SMART issues and the other is just plain dead. Bios doesnt even see that it is there anymore.

1 out of 5 eggsStrange coincidence - died on the same day as once.loyal.SG.buyer's drive

Pros: The Barracuda drives have been a mainstay of mine for many years. They hold stuff. They let me read it back. Less facetiously, they are quiet and reliable.

Cons: Well, it stopped working after 7 months in service

Other Thoughts: This is just plain strange. once.loyal.SG.buyer's description matches mine: it was working fine, SMART reported no errors, backups and restores worked. Then, yesterday, it stopped dead. To quote the previous reviewer, "Was working just fine and all, and then booted up on morning and the S.M.A.R.T. detector thing told me its toast." Can't read the drive on another system, can't read the drive with DOS-based utilities. Maybe it's a firmware virus that's taking them all out in the last week of June (weak joke).
A curious coincidence.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: none

Cons: Tried in 2 different puters and on the third wouldnt even boot could not be seen by windows 7 ul;timate 64 and xp 32.

Other Thoughts: normally i dont mention DOA items as it happens but this was on shocker and alot of them sent out seem to get doa reviews. That cost the customer. Newegg is still a good place to buy from period bad shipments happen. Really needed it just took a couple weeks to getting to use it in a new build with a case and other things i got. Most from newegg.

2 out of 5 eggsA good drive while it lasted

Pros: Initially, the driver performed well and was very quiet.

Cons: After about 25 days of use, the drive became unusable due to frequent unrecoverable read errors.

5 out of 5 eggsRAID 0 & 5 Review

Pros: I bought 5 of these drives and to date I've had them in 2 setups:
4 Disk Raid 0
5 Disk Raid 5
Both setups were on a Intel ICH10R chipset P45 mobo

In 5 disk raid 5 I achieved 412MB/s sustained reads, writes were not nearly as good at around 140 MB/s. This is because raid 5 overhead is just too much for the ICH10R but Raid 0 Has much less overhead.

In 4 disk raid 0:
Sequential Read = 430 MB/s
Sequential Write = 300 MB/s
4KB Seq. Read = 96,000 IOPS
4KB Seq. Write = 74,500 IOPS
4KB Random Read = 0.6 MB/s (Nothing compared to a SSD)
4KB Random Write = 4 MB/s ( bad speeds again)

I use the 4 disk raid 0 array as a working copy of my media and low resource programs. It is great at transferring movies, games, and music across my home network even though it saturates a gigabit ethernet connection @ 85MB/s. Transferring a 5 GB file from raid to ssd take about 20 seconds.

Cons: Random read/write speeds in raid will never come close to a good ssd.

You will need a good raid card if you want speed while using raid 5 arrays.

Other Thoughts: -Cheap
-Thin
-Single Platter
-Fast
-Newegg packed them very securely

3 out of 5 eggsbattered box = 2 failed drives?

Pros: specifications and pricing on this drive are great.

Cons: ordered 3 drives, 1 drive was DOA and another had some noticeable dents. I wasn't surprised when the dented drive failed the Seatools long test.

The box that the drives arrived in was half crushed on the top and one side. The drives were packed in a polysterene slot structure with large bubble wrap around that. Then this wispy, and worthless, brown paper tubing. While it seemed as though there was adequate packaging it certainly could have been much better in terms of keeping the drives in a fixed position in the box.

Other Thoughts: annoyed that I have to return two out of three drives, at my expense, that may have been OK if the packaging was better.

1 out of 5 eggsSEAGATE FAIL!

Pros: Good drive. Quick as usual. Its a hard drive. It holds stuff. The barracudas are always a good choice.

Cons: Giving her one egg since she just died in less than a year and It has been a nightmare.

AND (the other reason for 1 egg) The other slap in the face would be the fact that yeah seagate has a 3 year warranty, but did you know you have to ship it to them? AND pack it? With a bunch of ridiculous packing rules. Where do i get a SeaShell? Can't use bubble wrap they say. Well...i just bought a hdd recently from them and guess what it came in? bubble wrap. Every other company i've had to RMA to they send you a package to send it back in. I have to PAY to ship my broken hard drive that i already PAID for. Really Seagate? Really?

Other Thoughts: Was working just fine and all, and then booted up on morning and the S.M.A.R.T. detector thing told me its toast. The file system is gone and it is a RAW. The drive can't even be recognized by Disc Management. Think something on the inside just went bad or something. Really horrible thing though, I'm a 3d artist and I lost about a week's worth of super important work + a load of other important works. Funny thing is, I just bought another hard drive and dvd burner to do backups of stuff ONE DAY BEFORE it died. Literally had just got done opening my newegg box from the mail, and went to boot. FAIL! I feel like going WD now....

5 out of 5 eggsGreat hard drive

Pros: Very quiet
Seagate quality
Thin
Stays cool
Fast
Can't hear it spin up, unlike other hard drives

Cons: Can't really think of any other than seeing the reviews that claim the hard drive failed.. Hope that doesn't happen!

Other Thoughts: I used to have a 160GB Seagate hard drive in my computer as the primary hard drive for the OS and a 500GB Western Digital to store all document libraries.
The Western Digital was very loud and it would get very hot, even with a fan cooling the hard drives. The Seagate stayed around 30 degrees and the Western Digital around 50 degrees (Celsius).
Compared to my old Seagate hard drive, this one is very quiet and very thin! I can't even hear it spin up or during any activity, it makes a huge difference since now I can't tell whether my desktop is on or not. It's also a lot thinner than my old Seagate and Western Digital hard drive.
Buy this drive if you need 500GB of space and want a quiet, fast drive! :)

1 out of 5 eggsDrive DOA

Pros: Low cost as part of shell shocker deal.

Cons: Drive dead-on-arrival; could hear read head hunting but platter did not spin. Drive not recognized by computer either.

Other Thoughts: Bought drive as part of shell-shocker deal. RMA requested with replacement. Even if replacement drive works, cost of acquiring drive increased by 25% because of the cost to ship DOA drive back to Newegg, almost eliminating gains through deal.

4 out of 5 eggsSeems to be fine

Pros: Seems to have a fast load speed, and plenty of space for everything I need.

Cons: Appears to have over 50g missing from the stated 500g it is supposed to have, and I have only placed firefox, and the windows 7 OS.

Other Thoughts: Seems to be working well, was told seagate was a bad choice, but im quite happy with the purchase, was a little upset about the loss of over 50g of the 500 i ordered, but I can live with it since I have 2 other 250g hard drives to back it up. it went well with the ASUS M4A78L i got along with it and works what more can you ask for than for it to work.

I tried another HDD and it seen that one. Requested RMA

5 out of 5 eggsWhat a deal

Pros: I got 3 of these for $40 bucks each. Just transfered 60gbs at 120mbs.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I swear newegg mailed these from my neighbors house. I received them so quick!! Each hdd was bubble wrapped and in separate boxes.

1 out of 5 eggsOne of two is good - not good enough!!!

Pros: Inexpensive, was on sale. Touted as having better reliability than the notoriously bad previous versions.

Failed *RIGHT AWAY* - I much prefer it that way rather than after 6 months or a year's use. ;-)

The other one (same, ordered at same time) worked AOK. But will now test it thoroughly before using it. Guess why.

Cons: Hard drive failed on first attempt to use it - BSD in XP - testing with Seagate Seatools, failed short test, revealed LBA errors on about 30 sectors, which could be /and were repaired in software. But I'd rather not take chances with that drive.

Other Thoughts: I don't think Seagate has its act together, or maybe it has a new business model, with drives made to fail early, just past their warranty? (being sarcastic here)

4 out of 5 eggsHard Drive, nothing else.

Pros: -It came working out of box, so that's good i guess
-FREE with my Computer Case (HAF 932)

Cons: -None

Other Thoughts: Someone said that it runs hot, he must have gotten some bad drives because this one never breaks 28C under heavy load.
