Its sleek, piano-black encasing makes this new component look right at home beside the DVR, DVD-player and television.

The included FreeAgent Theater software is a rich media-specific synchronization application for the automatic transfer and organization of all the photos, music, videos and movies stored on your computer. And since the FreeAgent Go drives are now available in a rainbow of colors, it will be easy to catalog and organize digital libraries according to the color of the drive—storing favorite movies on one drive, family photos on a second and music on yet another.

4 out of 5 eggsPerforms

Pros: Works great from external drive or USB flash drive. Simply plug in your drive and you're watching all your stored content. It plays ISO files just like the DVD is in place. Also can play direct from folder and plays just as if you are playing the DVD when you launch the IFO file. I upscale to 1080i and it looks great on my 65in older HDTV.

Cons: At this price, there are none. Does what I need in to do. If you run into any issues with docking a larger Go drive (500GB+), simply connect using the USB cable and slide your drive partly into the bay with the connection facing out.

Other Thoughts: For slightly more than twice the price you could go with the FreeAgent Home Theater+ which will stream from your PC, internet and has HDMI as well as component out...also has digital optical out. I have that unit as well.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy this

Pros: It does do some things well, but it's shortcomings make this a poor buy.

Cons: I don't want to repeat what you can read in other posts here. The unit has some issues. Read the forum on Seagate's own website. I wish I had done that before buying this. The unit has issues not recognizing drives including Seagate's own FreeAgent Go drive. Without drive recognition, the unit is worthless. I wish someone would have posted this here before I asked my wife to purchase this unit for me as a gift. It works great from my 16GB flashdrive connected to the USB but I need it to work from an external hard drive so I can use it for what I intended it for. Seagate's customer service team has not provided any assistace since I advised them the unit does not recognize the freeagent drive I purchased here last week specifically for it. My wife purchased this unit for me from here in December, can you help?

Other Thoughts: There are more and more of these devices coming out. Wait a little longer or buy one of the other similar items for sale here on NewEgg and you will be glad you did! I spent several hours tying to determine why this wasn't working and finally came across the forum on Seagate's website titled "FreeAgent Theatres Go Port doesnt recognise FreeAgent GO external harddrive" . Then at 3AM last night I went to bed. Good thing I had off today.

4 out of 5 eggsMaybe Model Only, But You Save $$$ This Way

Pros: By buying only the model you can use an external hd you have on hand that uses a USB connection. I have a Western Digital hooked up and it works beautifully. Would purchase again.

Cons: The remote is small, very thin and the buttons are really close together.

Other Thoughts: I would definitely repurchase.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product, Good Price

Pros: I have western digital WD TV, MediaGate M2TV and this Seagate theater media player. All three products has its strength and weakness. For Chinese TV drama viewer, Seagate and MediaGate can select the episode from the menu, while WD TV skip the menu, and play the episode immediately. I have at least 6 out of 40 Chinese TV drama series DVD image that WD TV only plays last episode out of the multiple episode image. The seagate player has play control button on the machine. It emulates DVD player's design and function 100%.

Cons: It will display simplified Chinese character properly on the menu. Traditional Chinese is partially supported. No HDMI support, Theater + model with higher price has HDMI and network support. Seagate player is twice the size of the WD TV. A little big to carry out for traveling.

Other Thoughts: WD TV and MediaGate can display Traditional Chinese better than Seagate FreeAgent theater. WD TV and MediaGate totally depend on remote control to play.

3 out of 5 eggsOK but not great

Pros: Shiny, slick, little package that plays AVI, VOB, & ISO. AVIs look very good with the up-convert over component video (Y,Pb,Pr).

Plays surprisingly well from a USB stick, too. I put a VOB on a very cheap stick and it played great.

Cons: Remote control signal quite feeble. Frustrating.

DOES NOT play MKV, although the manual says it does (on page 25). Confirmed by Seagate: "As it turns out, this is an error in the FreeAgent Theater User Guide, and I have forwarded this information so that it can be fixed in future releases of the Guide."

Other Thoughts: Without MKV this does no more than a Buffalo LinkTheater net attached DVD player. But if you have a wireless network, this sneaker-net option works very well, especially with a FreeAgent drive. (I love FreeAgent drives!)

4 out of 5 eggsGood player

Pros: - Small and takes up little space
- Up-converts SD videos to 1080i (Looks pretty good)
- Fair amount of supported video files
- Nice glossy finish
- Good price without the HD
- DTS 5.1, really good if you have 5.1 speakers. Does not include the coax audio cable though.

Cons: - Poor response, menu is slow. Reminds me of the first color screened motorola phones.
- Did not come with Component cables (This one probably took off one egg for me, how do you expect your product's best feature to shine threw if you don't even include the cables necessary to see up-conversions.) I purchased one at a home depot for $14 b/c i didn't want to wait for one from newegg or e**y.
- The remote takes hearing aid batteries, and they're fairly expensive to replace compared to AA or AAA. Doesn't seem like it needs much power to operate though.
- Only 1 USB slot, limited connection if you don't have a Seagate HD.

Other Thoughts: The slot where you're suppose to put the proprietary Seagate FreeAgent travel HD is covered by a placeholder that makes the unit look much more attractive and blends in perfectly with the rest of the unit. I don't own the Seagate HD, nor do i plan to buy one, and so i wish there were at least 2 USBs instead of just one. The slow response is indicative of a slower processor, and may be a deal breaker for those who are looking for a better player. If you can get this for less than retail, and are not looking for anything special, then i recommend this.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Plays all my avi, mpeg files along with pictures and music. Dvds in iso format work as well. I have an older 1080p HDTV monitor without HDMI hookups so the component connections work for me. Videos in a folder play right after one another very smoothly.

Cons: Ended my warranty the first 5 minutes that I had it. It was ratteling when I pulled it out of the box and the freeagent hard drive would not stay locked in place. Took it apart and found the plastic that holds the spring that locks the drive in place had broke. Well I drilled a hole and put a screw in from the bottom which gave the spring a place to lock on and it works like a champ now. I do like that you can preview videos but I don't like how you have to preview the videos before you can actually watch the videos. The remote is hard to use and the unit is slow to respond to remote inputs, so sometimes you press the buttons too many times because you don't think that you pressed the buttons hard enough.

Other Thoughts: It would be nice if in the future that they added more filetypes that the unit would play. Firmware version 1.00.15

5 out of 5 eggsThis is cool

Pros: I bought this version without the accompanying drive since I have external drives. Instead it's easier to use thumb drives. My 32 gig thumb drive has ample storage. All works great. The accompanying software is easy to use. I'll probably buy another. What took technology so long to give us this. DVDs need to die.

Cons: Now if they will just put a network connection on it.
