The brand new Seagate Barracuda LP (low-power) family is here, designed and built by the desktop performance leader, but with the primary focus on a low-power, cool and quiet drive at an entry-level price. This drive allows users to do more while using less power. The Barracuda LP drives deliver on low-power consumption. But low power no longer means slow power. Benchmark performance results prove the 5900-RPM spin speed advantages (when compared to competitor drives that spin at 5400 RPMs). And these drives are cool and easy on the PC, often requiring fewer fans, a smaller power supply and lower maintenance costs. It’s the definition of energy efficiency.

2 out of 5 eggsmy $0.02

Pros: Quiet. Warranty is good.

Cons: Like everyone else, I've had nothing but bad experience with this drive. Bought 4 of them. 3 of them have been RMA'd, and I've had to RMA both the "re-certified" drives I got back after a month of use. Less than 10 hours use on the drive!

Other Thoughts: I used to think Seagate was good. I find that pretty much that with any manufacturer with a drive over 1TB, the reliability of the drive is iffy. I guess the technology isn't there yet. Don't want to buy an Enterprise class drive!

2 out of 5 eggs1 of 2 failing after 7200 hours

Pros: At the time seemed like a good deal. Three year warranty, thank goodness.

Cons: After 7200 hours in use (300 days), one of two drives is reporting SMART failures of the sector reallocation kind. Glad it will be under warranty.

Other Thoughts: Need to swap this failing drive out. Have two in RAID1 in Synology DS212j with DSM 4.0 which shows an alert for disk problems. The HDD management summary reports status "normal" but when you zoom in on detailed "SMART info" it shows that one drive has Reallocated_Sector_Ct "failing now" and raw data of 3941 which I take to mean that many sectors have failed. Yikes. Will submit a seagate warranty claim. Should have a spare drive on hand to swap in the meantime.

1 out of 5 eggsFail

Pros: Cheap, good warranty

Cons: Failure rate too high. Purchased two for Raid 1, both lasted about a year, then both failed within days of each of other. End result: Loss of data.

Other Thoughts: Hard to believe such a reputable company put out such a shoddy product.

1 out of 5 eggsWorthless Drive from Seagate

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Not reliable at all. Flaky.

Other Thoughts: Bought two of them and both of them fail within first 6 month of light usages such as backup and external device. RMA both. Cannot believe Seagate was producing such worthless product. It really made me start to wondering Seagate's quality controls after ~15 years of good brand name.

1 out of 5 eggsdon't trust it your data

Pros: was cheap, cold

Cons: first one was DOA, replacement lasted 1.5 year and failed last month. Lucky I havent found time yet to migrate data from my previous 1Gig drive that stayed the main storage and this one was just hooked up for temporary data.

Other Thoughts: Don't store anything that you will miss on this drive.

5 out of 5 eggsBought 11/29/10

Pros: Same story, bought it Black Friday for 70$ and its still working today! I've only just now used up one terabyte, what a great bargain!

No failures ever, has been used as a main drive since I bought it.

Cons: Can sometimes hang up a bit but I'm sure thats just because its gettin up there in age.

Other Thoughts: Good product, need a SSD though.

5 out of 5 eggsStill Chuggin'

Pros: Owned since 11/27/2010, back then I got it for $69 each and I purchased 4 of them. So far they all work flawlessly and beautifully. No problems. I have them in MediaSonic Raid array in raid 5.

Cons: Tiny bit slow, saving/accessing, not bad though

Other Thoughts: Still very happy, little nervous it might die here in year two but I am not too worried about rebuild as others have had good luck.
