The brand new Seagate Barracuda LP (low-power) family is here, designed and built by the desktop performance leader, but with the primary focus on a low-power, cool and quiet drive at an entry-level price. This drive allows users to do more while using less power. The Barracuda LP drives deliver on low-power consumption. But low power no longer means slow power. Benchmark performance results prove the 5900-RPM spin speed advantages (when compared to competitor drives that spin at 5400 RPMs). And these drives are cool and easy on the PC, often requiring fewer fans, a smaller power supply and lower maintenance costs. It’s the definition of energy efficiency.

3 out of 5 eggsOK drive, don't trust it.

Pros: Received multiple drives for use in RAID.

All are funtioning well with no bad sectors or SMART failures after 5 days of running stress tools.

Cons: Complaint: Came with CC34 firmware and was unable to update the drives to CC35 using Seagate's Firmware update tool.

Other Thoughts: Drives do click a bit when parking/unparking the head, but apparently that's normal operation now?

Unclear feedback on the above problem and being unable to update the Firmware with Seagate's tool knocks two eggs off the score of this HDD.

1 out of 5 eggsTwo failures in two months

Pros: Quiet
Low Power Usage
Slightly faster than the green WD drives (at least the first rev)

Cons: Two failures in two months.

Other Thoughts: Seagate's quality control has fallen dramatically in the last several years. I used to buy Seagate exclusively, now I'm switching to Western Digital. I have yet to have a Western Digital drive fail (though obviously they have their issues too).

Also, when Seagate sends replacement drives, they are refurb'ed units, and you pay for shipping (to them). No, I'm not a happy camper.

5 out of 5 eggsNo Problem for Me

Pros: Lots of space, quiet, fast enough for my intended purpose (media drive).

Cons: None yet, and I don't expect any.

Other Thoughts: I thought I had some concerns about Seagate drives when I purchased 2 750 GB drives a year ago. Turned out to be a power supply issue, as the clicking went away after I upgraded the PS. I have 4 750 GB Seagates (1 to 2 yrs old), 2 350 GB Seagates (3 yrs old), and this new 2GB drive. I've never had a DOA or disk failure. Keep your system cool and get a good PS. I will be buying another and sticking with Seagate.

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: All the manufacturers claim

Cons: The drive generated 4000 bad sectors and needs to be replaced in 10 months .

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: Price/capacity

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Piece of cake. Installed the drive and it was up and running in minutes. Copied ~700GB of data onto it with no problems. I was also pleasantly surprised with how quiet it is and how little heat it generates (relatively speaking). I replaced a 500GB drive with this one and this one is much quieter, faster, and cooler than my previous drive.

1 out of 5 eggs2 drives busted...done

Pros: NONE - really!

Cons: Two drives dead. The first verified by S.M.A.R.T, the other by chkdsk...

Other Thoughts: Should Newegg be selling this product???!!!

5 out of 5 eggsPretty Good

Pros: Bought 5 for Raid 5 in Synology DS1010+. All 5 working fine. Updated firmware to CC35 because I had read a forum where someone was saying that upgrading to CC35 fixed raid degradation issues he was having. Had to force update though. (You need to use the boot cd method then you'll have to type in a long string command to force the update, Google for more info)

Cons: These drives do 'click'. Although it doesn't sound like I had envisioned after reading about it prior to ordering. It sounds more like a loud seek with a more distinct higher pitch noise. I've only noticed it when these drives come on after hibernation or just turning the power on. It doesn't sound like it's causing damage but then again I'm not an expert in this area.

Accessing and using the drives does cause some noise. Seems a little loud for a green drive. Comparable to some previous generation 7200RPM drives I'd say.

Other Thoughts: With the Synology DiskStation, it asks if you want to do a parity check or something when you first create the raid. I did the full test which took like 15 or so hours (with 2TB x 5 raid 5). It passed with no issues. Also ran the extended smart test which took like 6 hours or so. Also all drives passed.

Overall I'm happy but then again I might do some more research next time to get a drive that can offer a little more piece of mind

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: None

Cons: Arrived non-functional.

Other Thoughts: This drive would not format and failed SMART. There seems to be a high failure rate reported on Newegg.

My second/replacement drive is working fine.

3 out of 5 eggsFailed drive

Pros: Great price for lots of storage.

Cons: Bought 4 drives, 1 failed SMART.

Other Thoughts: Newegg RMA'd the drive for free and their customer service is top notch, but it needs to be shipped from NY to CA. The wait time is unbearable!

1 out of 5 eggsDanger, danger

Pros: 2TB Storage, faster than WD 5400rpm drives

Cons: Clicked a little on format, thought it was because the clicking went away. Tried transferring files off the drive and kept getting errors. Ran Seatools. It found one drive failed and the other was failing.

Other Thoughts: Well, I thought I'd give Seagate another try and fail. 2 of 2 drives dead. Going back to WD.
