The brand new Seagate Barracuda LP (low-power) family is here, designed and built by the desktop performance leader, but with the primary focus on a low-power, cool and quiet drive at an entry-level price. This drive allows users to do more while using less power. The Barracuda LP drives deliver on low-power consumption. But low power no longer means slow power. Benchmark performance results prove the 5900-RPM spin speed advantages (when compared to competitor drives that spin at 5400 RPMs). And these drives are cool and easy on the PC, often requiring fewer fans, a smaller power supply and lower maintenance costs. It’s the definition of energy efficiency.

2 out of 5 eggsFailed without warning

Pros: Comparable price and performance for it's time.
very easy to use and install.
No problems until it failed without warning.

Cons: Failed without warning after only a few years.

Apparently this particular model is known to spontaneously fail thanks to a new platter coating Seagate started using with this model. It also has a higher failure rate than Western Digital and Hitachi combined.

Other Thoughts: Do your research before you buy. Be sure to check the 1-2 star reviews to look for common problems.

2 out of 5 eggsSt32000542AS

Pros: It Works long enough for the warranty to expire

Cons: I have had over half the hard drives I bought from Seagate go bad just a few days after the warranty expired looks like there really good at making drives last just long enough.

Other Thoughts: Seagate has really got down hill years ago they warrantied there hard drives for 5 years and they would last 10+ the ones made in the last few years are warrantied for 2 years and last 2 years and 1 day. I have bought several like 8+ and all have gone bad just after the warranty expires.
so at the price and useful lifetime they are quite expensive storage solutions like around $30 per year plus electricity per 2tb storage there must be a cheaper way

1 out of 5 eggsAwful Drive

Pros: 2TB on the cheap

Cons: Everything else; original drive lasted less than a year before going out. Received a "certified repaired HDD" after RMA and that went out within months. Now it's out of warranty and a lot of my valuable data is "lost." I'm keeping the drive so I can recover it later, hopefully.

Other Thoughts: Stay away from Seagate at all costs.

2 out of 5 eggsHolding my breath on 3rd Replacement

Pros: Seagate was nice enough to send me my 3rd drive even though I was out of warranty. Happy as a pig! Yeah but now the cons.......

Cons: Can you say "I'm having a drive nightmare?"

Purchased first drive 08/31/09 with CC32 firmware; it died 12/17/11 so I got a little over 2 years on that drive.

Seagate replaced it with a refurb with firmware CC34; that drive died today 8/2/13 so I got less than 2 yrs on that drive.

So, even though I was out of warranty I called Seagate and cried. I complained that even a refurb drive can't last 2 years? They were nice enough to agree to send me another drive and warranty it for 30 days.

Other Thoughts: Fortunately I had no data on the drive. It was just sitting there spinning and suffering a terrible slow death. If a drive could have cancer, this drive has a high risk rate. Just read the other 600 reviews.

Seagate is cross shipping the replacement. First thing I'll do is check the firmware and update to CC35 if it's not done already. Second thing I'll do is a full format so if there are bad sectors I can return it for another one.

Then I'll let it spin for a month or so and see if it dies. Then I'll read/write small and large files to it and see if it still refuses to die.

Then I'll probably actually use the drive but back it up. You never know when cancer will hit this drive. I look at this as an experiment.

Had I know that there was a CC35 firmware update I would have done that a long time ago. Too bad there's no way to put in your email and request updates as they become available.

I'm beginning to think that purchasing hard drives is a bit like rebuilding a car. Only difference is that a rebuilt car lasts much longer than 2 years; unless your rebuilding a lemon, which, in this case is exactly what we've got.

2 out of 5 eggsmy $0.02

Pros: Quiet. Warranty is good.

Cons: Like everyone else, I've had nothing but bad experience with this drive. Bought 4 of them. 3 of them have been RMA'd, and I've had to RMA both the "re-certified" drives I got back after a month of use. Less than 10 hours use on the drive!

Other Thoughts: I used to think Seagate was good. I find that pretty much that with any manufacturer with a drive over 1TB, the reliability of the drive is iffy. I guess the technology isn't there yet. Don't want to buy an Enterprise class drive!

2 out of 5 eggs1 of 2 failing after 7200 hours

Pros: At the time seemed like a good deal. Three year warranty, thank goodness.

Cons: After 7200 hours in use (300 days), one of two drives is reporting SMART failures of the sector reallocation kind. Glad it will be under warranty.

Other Thoughts: Need to swap this failing drive out. Have two in RAID1 in Synology DS212j with DSM 4.0 which shows an alert for disk problems. The HDD management summary reports status "normal" but when you zoom in on detailed "SMART info" it shows that one drive has Reallocated_Sector_Ct "failing now" and raw data of 3941 which I take to mean that many sectors have failed. Yikes. Will submit a seagate warranty claim. Should have a spare drive on hand to swap in the meantime.
