The brand new Seagate Barracuda LP (low-power) family is here, designed and built by the desktop performance leader, but with the primary focus on a low-power, cool and quiet drive at an entry-level price. This drive allows users to do more while using less power. The Barracuda LP drives deliver on low-power consumption. But low power no longer means slow power. Benchmark performance results prove the 5900-RPM spin speed advantages (when compared to competitor drives that spin at 5400 RPMs). And these drives are cool and easy on the PC, often requiring fewer fans, a smaller power supply and lower maintenance costs. It’s the definition of energy efficiency.

4 out of 5 eggsThis is a good drive!

Pros: works fine. quiet, cool, fast (for sub-7200 drive)

Cons: other people having problems. I am over the worry stage now.

Other Thoughts: I bought a WD Black 2TB drive taht was DOA. I returned it to the store, then New Egg has a sale on this drive. I was building a MM machine and needed cheap space. That is what this drive is. It works fine for me. BTW, if you check passmark, it beats out at least 1 7200rpm drive on a similar machine as mine.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for RAID/WHS 'duplication' setups

Pros: Works fairly well.
Highly recommended for WHS environment.
(Be sure to get multiple drives & enable RAID/duplication incase one drive does fail!)
Avg cost of $0.18 per gigabyte. (1.83TB/$100)

Cons: One drive failed within two weeks of purchase.
RMA'd dead drive.
Dead drive appears as 4.5GB via bios, windows is unable to detect drive at all, unable to complete S.M.A.R.T. test.

Other Thoughts: Out of 4 total drives, I have only had a single drive fail thus far. So a 25% drive failure rate for me, your mileage will vary.

A 5.4/5.9k RPM drive is better suited for network storage than a 7.2k RPM drive, as the network will bottleneck the transfer speed far before the drive even on a gigabit network. (I use dual gigabit nics in load balancing configuration on the server with full CAT-6 cable & switches/routers.)

I have yet to call for a warranty repair for any of numerous seagate drives I own. The above drive happened to fail within the 30 day RMA window, and a new drive replacement via RMA was preferable to a refurb warranty drive.

5 out of 5 eggsvalue

Pros: works as advertised. massive amounts of space. you can't mess with the price, 99$ on a newegg email blast promotion.

Cons: the lowest rated component on my windows experience index, coming in at a 5.9, maybe too slow as a primary drive for someone who cares a lot about their windows experience index score. but i haven't had any problems playing back 10gb movies or accessing my 500gb music collection.

Other Thoughts: i don't have to think about running out of room on my hard-drive anytime soon.

1 out of 5 eggsClick of Death at the 1 year mark

Pros: No issues with the drive till it died.

Cons: 1 year mark and the "Click of Death" appeared. Replaced the drive with a 2TB western digital after the drive would not boot.

Other Thoughts: It's a shame, I'd been staying away from the Seagate 1.5TB drives because I knew of the large amount of issues with them. When the 2TB drive came out I saw initial good reviews and purchased it. Sadly it seems like the 2TB Seagates also suffer from large issues like their predecessors.

It's a sad day when a 750GB Seagate many years older out lives a newer 2TB Seagate.

I'd recommend the XT 2TB over the LP 2TB. Seems like the XT has higher survivability.

3 out of 5 eggsOK drive, don't trust it.

Pros: Received multiple drives for use in RAID.

All are funtioning well with no bad sectors or SMART failures after 5 days of running stress tools.

Cons: Complaint: Came with CC34 firmware and was unable to update the drives to CC35 using Seagate's Firmware update tool.

Other Thoughts: Drives do click a bit when parking/unparking the head, but apparently that's normal operation now?

Unclear feedback on the above problem and being unable to update the Firmware with Seagate's tool knocks two eggs off the score of this HDD.

1 out of 5 eggsTwo failures in two months

Pros: Quiet
Low Power Usage
Slightly faster than the green WD drives (at least the first rev)

Cons: Two failures in two months.

Other Thoughts: Seagate's quality control has fallen dramatically in the last several years. I used to buy Seagate exclusively, now I'm switching to Western Digital. I have yet to have a Western Digital drive fail (though obviously they have their issues too).

Also, when Seagate sends replacement drives, they are refurb'ed units, and you pay for shipping (to them). No, I'm not a happy camper.

5 out of 5 eggsNo Problem for Me

Pros: Lots of space, quiet, fast enough for my intended purpose (media drive).

Cons: None yet, and I don't expect any.

Other Thoughts: I thought I had some concerns about Seagate drives when I purchased 2 750 GB drives a year ago. Turned out to be a power supply issue, as the clicking went away after I upgraded the PS. I have 4 750 GB Seagates (1 to 2 yrs old), 2 350 GB Seagates (3 yrs old), and this new 2GB drive. I've never had a DOA or disk failure. Keep your system cool and get a good PS. I will be buying another and sticking with Seagate.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: Price/capacity

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Piece of cake. Installed the drive and it was up and running in minutes. Copied ~700GB of data onto it with no problems. I was also pleasantly surprised with how quiet it is and how little heat it generates (relatively speaking). I replaced a 500GB drive with this one and this one is much quieter, faster, and cooler than my previous drive.

1 out of 5 eggs2 drives busted...done

Pros: NONE - really!

Cons: Two drives dead. The first verified by S.M.A.R.T, the other by chkdsk...

Other Thoughts: Should Newegg be selling this product???!!!
