OverviewCustomer ReviewSpecificationsProduct Tour
The brand new Seagate Barracuda LP (low-power) family is here, designed and built by the desktop performance leader, but with the primary focus on a low-power, cool and quiet drive at an entry-level price. This drive allows users to do more while using less power. The Barracuda LP drives deliver on low-power consumption. But low power no longer means slow power. Benchmark performance results prove the 5900-RPM spin speed advantages (when compared to competitor drives that spin at 5400 RPMs). And these drives are cool and easy on the PC, often requiring fewer fans, a smaller power supply and lower maintenance costs. It’s the definition of energy efficiency.

Click-A-Matic

white Reviewed By: on 10/13/2009
Rating + 1
Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Runs cool and quiet (at least until they start clicking).
Cons: I own four of these drives bought in three different orders from various companies. One drive lasted for a few months before it started clicking so much that it became useless. The click sounds like a head unload and load cycle. Another drive lasted weeks and clicks from time to time but is still useable. One drive I just got from newegg lasted a couple of days before it started clicking incessantly a few hours ago. I'm listening to it click as I type this. One drive has barely been used but who knows how long that one will last. In all cases the drives don't give read errors. They just click so much that the drive becomes unuseable. Scanning and reformatting does not fix the problem. It never actually reports an error nor does the SMART data report that any sectors have been reallocated. They just click. A lot.

So I have one barely-used drive out of four which doesn't click. And two of four (from different orders which were months apart) which have both become useless.
Other Thoughts: I've used hard disks since they were 6 megabytes (yes, I said megabytes). For the most part, hard disks have been very reliable for me. But I've had the misfortune of using drives from generations which later became renowned for high death rates.

2 out of 4 of these Seagate drives are useless with 1 more looking like trouble. This is in two different computers with the drives purchased in three different batches over a period of months.

I've built computers since the 80's and the only time I've had hard disk problems like this were generations which ended up being infamous over some kind of design flaw. It's a bit early to tell but it looks to me like this 500GB/platter Seagate generation is going to be one of the bad ones. I'm not that mad at Seagate. I've seen it happen before to IBM and WD. It happens to all of them. I just have four drives so it's not that big of a sample but given so many other people reporting the same symptoms, I'd avoid this generation of Seagates.

50% DOA

Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: The drive that works is quiet and runs cool with no SMART errors at all.
Cons: One of two drives DOA. I read all the reviews about DOA drives, but since this was so cheap, I ordered two and took my chances. 50% DOA is not acceptable. Waiting for a new one from Newegg. I hope I get a good one.
Other Thoughts: I ordered two of these drives and installed them in a NAS. One of the drives immediately started to have sector reallocation errors. The other drive had no errors. After two days the drive failed the SMART self evaluation and SMART said to replace the drive. Sent the one drive back for replacement.

Excellent low power drive

white Reviewed By: nar on 2/4/2010

Tech Level Tech Level: average - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Low power, cool running, fast, reliable
Cons: None at this time (maybe bad GB/$)
Other Thoughts: I bought 4 of these last year over the summer when they first came out; I originally wanted to buy the WD drives, but these were available… what I ended up buying; these drives were used 24/7 until I added a 5th drive a few months ago… so far all of them are working very well without any issues and up to spec *knock on wood*. I have another coming on the way to expand my storage and I have a good feeling about it.

I may not be the fastest drive out there, but for an external JBOD solution it's both cool and quiet; it offers good speed and works very well. I'm happy. I can't comment on the other owners' whose drives have been DOA one after another, but so far so good for me.

works ok

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Works as expected.
Installed and setup fast, runs fast and cool.
Got on sale, I too nervous of this drives reported history.
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: I intend to buy more if this one holds up. The 1TB drives work well, I want to let this one stew a bit, this is my first 2TB. I used in server with a jbod's 1TB Seagates and Ubuntu 9.10 server. Performance is very good on uploading (internal 100MB/s) on modest performance mainboard/cpu. Runs cool, I avoid the 7200RPM drives in server, they tend to run hot. It was not in smart-tools database yet but known values/levels ok. I ran short and extended (12hr) self-test.

working HDD

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: it works, put it in my corsair 800D's drive caddy, boot into window 7, 5 hours of reformatting(regular not quick) later and now i have 1.8TB of extra space. 5900rpm doesn't make that much of a rattle as my WD caviar black and runs 5-7 Celsius cooler.
Cons: its 5900rpm? but i'm sure you already know that :) as long as you're not making this your main boot drive or loading games off it. i don't really see a problem with having a 5900rpm HDD. plus i think having a lower rpm hdd would last longer since it's spinning at a lower rotation. less chance of failing? who knows :), again, that's what i think. don't quote me on that.
Other Thoughts: so far i haven't had one single hard drive fail on me yet. i had left my pc running over night for the past 2 years or so, and no i don't have an ambient temp of an arctic tundra,

for HD tune i'm getting 117.5mb/s max with 36.3mb/s min and 76mb/s avg. with access time of around 13ms, for some reason it is 3 ms lower than my other seagate 5900rpm 2tb i brought here 6 month ago, perhaps a new revision?

well that's it for my review, hope this was helpful and cleared up any confusion anyone had.
