2 out of 5 eggsNot worth the aggravation

Pros: Works great for roughly a year.

Cons: Works terrible after roughly a year.

Other Thoughts: Order of drive breakdown: 1. Starts getting flaky to both PC and Mac whether it wants to connect or not. 2. Starts tripping up Windows/OSX as a USB-1 peripheral. 3. Starts slowing down and doing that clicking thing that's been described by other reviewers. Recommend copying data elsewhere before it's too late. 4. Death

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY!

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: Broke in less than a year

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these hard drives less than a year ago. Both have been having issues and one finally broke completely today after 10 months and only medium usage.

3 out of 5 eggsa lot of storage for a very good price

Pros: a lot of storage for a good price, very competitive

comes with everything you need (no need to get a USB cable for example)

5 year warranty is one of the best

great for use as a backup disk

great powersaving features (automatically powers down after a time, and can be reactivated by a start-unit command)

easy to register on Seagate's site once you find their page for it (took a little hunting around for it.)

FreeAgent software is available for download if you wipe it from the drive.

Linux handled it without doing anything at all, save plugging it into a free USB port. It just shows up as yet another USB mass storage device.

power supply is 2 blade nonpolarized (no need to ground or insert it into power only one way).

Cons: This gets 3 eggs instead of 5 for its idiotic activity indicator. The engineers at Seagate thought it would be cutesy to implement a fade up and down effect. This means instead of glancing at the unit and seeing either dark (not powered), alternate color (powersave), bright (no activity but ready), or blinking (activity), you must stare at it a while to figure out what's going on. One or two times of course isn't terrible if you have the spare time, but multiplied by the thousands of times you're likely to do this over the life of the product is just plain stupid. It's an example of doing something merely for the sake of doing it, utility of doing so be darned. It would have been far better to use a more traditional drive activity LED scheme (or "inverted" as proposed previously).

It's easy to detach the North American adapter while unplugging the power supply. "Wall wort" design requires plugging it into the end of a standard power strip or a short adapter cable.

Other Thoughts: I've trusted Seagate for a long time, and was one of the major factors for choosing this disk product. Thankfully I have not yet experienced any of their reliability problems (such as their famous "too much lubricant" on their 1st generation 1G disks). It was a big disappointment to experience their front panel activity indication choice.

The bracket used to stand it up on end is a little odd. It would have been nicer if it attached/detached more easily, especially to prepare it for transport in a bag or briefcase.

1 out of 5 eggsBeware Clicking Sound & Failure

Pros: Large Storge Capacity. 5 Year Warranty when most manufacters offer 1-3 year Warranty. Good Price.

Cons: I used the external drive for 2 days before it started making the DREADED clicking sound. Then my file tranfers would error out. I'm glad that I did not delete the files from my computer after I tranfered them to this external drive or I would have lost the files.

Other Thoughts: The 5 year Warranty is great, BUT you can not put a price on the files that you lost due do product faliure.

I would not recommend this product. Newegg has a great RMA policy, but I still have to pay an additional $11.50 to ship it back to newegg for an RMA. Hopefully the replacement will function properly because I will not be happy if I have to pay to ship the second drive for an RMA.

How can Seagate allow such a product with high failure rates?

4 out of 5 eggsAPPLE TV users rejoice!

Pros: Perfectly fits within the AppleTV's footprint with nearly identical colour case match!
FANLESS!! Nearly completely silent operation to match the AppleTV

Cons: Does the front LED panel have to be so BIG & BRIGHT!?!?! I mean geez.
Well its not that bad (I dont see it my setup) but if its right in front of you, it could be distracting.
A little slow to be recognised by the AppleTV. (When rebooting or starting up, you now have wait a couple minutes while it syncs itself with the Apple. (But its the same with 2 of my PC's so I guess that is the way it is?)

Other Thoughts: Wow! I am so pleased with how this setup has turned out.

After years of playing around with frustrating MCE setups, I decided to give the AppleTV a try. Well, not for actually using it as an AppleTV, but applying a third party patch to enable the external USB port (which Apple has disabled) and installing the free XMBC Media Center platform.

The next step was finding a HDD to go along with it. I wanted the biggest external currently available drive at a good price with a case that had to be silver (to match the Apple). Enter the Seagate 2TB, and as luck would have it, its in a footprint that almost appears that if it was purposely designed to be paired up with an AppleTV!! ((You need to completely wipe Seagates software from the drive re-format it to a FAT32 file system with the partition called MYATV..REQUIRED FOR THE APPLETV USB PATCH TO WORK))

I now have a very simple nearly FREE Media Center that compared to any current MCE product is nearly flawless!

:)

1 out of 5 eggsscaly carp

Pros: May be good for a paperweight or monitor shim...
Although, I even think the HD case is awkward and ugly...

Cons: This is the second Seagate hard drive I have bought that refuses to communicate properly with an airport extreme USB airdrive setup. The last 1.5TB Seagate that wouldn't work went into my iMac.. not sure what to do with this yet...

Other Thoughts: I feel the SAMBA server is much more secure then any external HD security software. The argument for built in security may be more for physical theft though, so take it as you will.
I highly recommend WD elements for the Airport Extreme USB network.
[ Not the newer WD's with built in hardware / firmware security ]

5 out of 5 eggsNice Drive for the price

Pros: Nice sleek case with attractive lighted logo.
7200 RPM drive
Very attractive price at $149.99 for 2TB
Seagate 5 year warranty
White/Silver so Mac users will like it.
Can't hear it running at all.
Seagate manager software with backup and sync backup is included on drive and optional to install and optional to use if installed. (works like Apple's Time Machine Sync backup) Rsync style Backup software is highly recommended no matter who makes it.

Cons: The A/C power plug is a little bulky (about 3"Lx2"Wx2"thick with the plug an inch from the end and it doesn't sit perpendicular to the power strip so takes 3 plugs space unless at the end) so I had to put it at the end of a power strip. probably due to the fact that you can change the plug type on the transformer by slipping the adapter off and putting one for a different country on it.

The base for vertical use doesn't snap into place, it presses into place but doesn't feel like it would take much to pull it off...it may even fall off when moving the drive.
White/Silver instead of brown or black & silver like most new PC's and Laptops.(looks MAC colored)

Other Thoughts: The lights can be turned off using the seagate manager software which is installed if you click the "setup.exe" file included on the drive. Even if you install the seagate software you can tell it that you don't want to use it....... right at the end of the install. (It's installed now so you can still use it later if you want though)

5 out of 5 eggsWorks fine for backup

Pros: Quiet, cheap, better design than most

Cons: Bulky AC Adapter, Only USB or esata

Other Thoughts: These have been great for me so faar, I back-up enormous files (photo and video) and have had no problems. Every hard drive will fail eventually and I've had problems with every brand - you should always double back up anyway. Yes these aren't that fats and you should NEVER edit video via usb anyway, you should at least use a firewire drive for video. These are made for storage not active use, and for that they're great.
