2 out of 5 eggsGood, but could use some work

Pros: This NAS device is actually pretty decent for the price and the storage you get. For someone with technical knowledge the configuration should be straight forward. You do have to know the difference between Disks, Volumes, and Shares; and have some knowledge of user permissions. The speed is also acceptable for a NAS device.

Cons: The biggest downfall to this unit is "Media Sort" or "Drag & Sort" ... This "feature" sorts your media into a "My Music", "My Pictures" and "My Videos" folder based on the file type. In my situation, my pictures and my music were arranged and organized in subfolders, usually by artist, then album. In the Share config screen the button to sort media looks almost exactly like the button to modify the share properties. I clicked it, and the media sorted. What I was left with was a bunch of empty subfolders and three folders full of my files, in no subfolders, just in that one folder. No confirmation ... No undo ... BEWARE!!!

Other Thoughts: I can't for the life of me figure out what this media sort feature is for in a small business entry level NAS device. It's like that picture of Darth Vader filtering ocean water with a Brita pitcher ... It makes no sense!

This was the deal breaker for me on this device. I will be returning it. There is no option to disable the one-time sort, and it's just too dangerous to have that sitting there.

I e-mailed Seagate tech support to suggest this be changed in later firmware revisions. Five minutes later I got an e-mail that said e-mail support on the device was not available and I should call them. After they wanted my credit card number to continue, my mind was made up and it will be returned.

A shame since it is otherwise a decent device ... but this experience makes me gives it only two stars.

4 out of 5 eggsA Toss Up

Pros: It looks sexy and it was easy to physically setup and install drives.

Cons: Slow Performance....Configured RAID 5 with 2 additional 1TB HD's. and copying files to the device over a 1Gbps network still is slow..and the read speed is nothing to write home about either.

Other Thoughts: I had the date problem when i first ran the setup, till i read the forums, once i chose a different date, everything went through fine.I expected more from seagate honestly.. but i still use the nas to save files to that i need to have access to.i did not join the domain with it so i do not know about that. Periodically the FAN alert comes on..but then goes away by the time i see it to acknowledge it.

Pros: Not many. The device hardware seems to be running ok. RAID has not failed yet.

Cons: -Firmware/software is horrible.
-Active Directory support is a joke and difficult to get working.
-Slow file transfer speed (Even with dual gigabit ports)
-Backups to external USB devices are horribly slow.
-No incremental/differential backups. (full backups only)
-No backup status/completion/failed email messages.
-Cannot use cloud based backup services (ie mozy, carbonite etc.)

Other Thoughts: Pretty much all of the business NAS features don't work, or are totally inadequate. It is next to impossible to back up the NAS if you have 50GB or more of data.

In my opinion, Seagate should have never released this product to the public. There are way to many problems with the software and firmware updates are released rarely. Tech support is aware of all the issues, but has no idea when they will be resolved.

Be smart and stay as far away from this device as possible.

Manufacturer Response:

The Active Directory issues have been addressed via a firmware upgrade. Please go to the below link and download the latest firmware upgrade.

Regarding transfer speeds. Since the NAS is attached to the network, it is important to remember that the device the NAS is connected to can negatively impact NAS performance. Specifically if the switch/router/wireless router has a 10/100 instead of a 10/100/1000 connection and/or a wireless router that regularly times out and loses a connection, can negatively impact transfer speeds of the NAS. Additionally, network traffic can negatively impact the transfer speeds of the NAS - if there are multiple people on the network doing content-heavy activities, it is very possible transfer speeds will be lower.

Pros: Hmmm. Packed well?

Cons: Does not work w/ Active Directory, even though it says that it does. Spent hours w/ tech support and they are aware of the limitations and "working on it". Could not backup workstation directly either, maybe related to the AD, but I don't think so, just another problem w/ another fix provided by tech support that did not work.

5 out of 5 eggsBA NAS 420

Pros: 10/100/1000 BaseT Ethernet! I have tested this NAS on the back end of my Mac Pro 2008 Dual Ethernet and it worked flawlessly. I also added a 1TB hard drive for a 3 Drive config. and put it in RAID 5. You will need 4 drives for RAID 10.

It is my itunes server/back up unit. It is hooked through the Apple Airport Base unit via Gigabit ethernet. Make sure you set up the router to direct traffic flow to/from the NAS's address. Make it fixed address too. Turn off file sorting too! I do not use this as my Time Machine back up. But I think you can. Turn off file sorting! Did I say that again? LOW LOW LOW noise level. I only hear the clicks as the drives head moves. Even this is not loud.

I will come back and add feedback should anything change.

Cons: The Manual is very hard to understand. Could not use Retrospect 8.1 to back up to the unit. Not sure why. Had to use an app called File Synchronization to do the data Syncs. I contacted Seagate about this and will talk to EMC next week. I do not think it is a Seagate issue. It could be a me issue as well.

Other Thoughts: If you want to set this up as an iTunes server turn off Sorting! If you use a Mac and want to back up files via Time Machine, Turn off file sorting! The Manual and I don't get along. Some guy from Harvard must have written it. Remember than Mac OS X is Unix when OS X is being used. Outstanding device from here I sit.
