2 out of 5 eggsPoor quality hard drive

Pros: The usual pros for any old 1 TB

Cons: Loud spin up and head movement
Constantly parked head even when reading/writing
Very swift failure, suddenly 60 bad sectors, then suddenly head crash and drive destroyed.
Lasted only 3 years, when my old hitachi from 2006 has been continuously used and abused has zero issues.

Other Thoughts: Okay drive, died very quickly, luckily did not purchase several.

3 out of 5 eggsFailing

Pros: Has always been as fast as I need it. Much faster than my external drive.

Cons: I've owned this drive for about 2 years and it's about to die; SMART STATUS BAD. I've never had a HDD die that quickly before.

Other Thoughts: This was a gift and probably not purchased on newegg at the time

2 out of 5 eggsfailed after 2 years

Pros: worked well when it worked and wasn't clicking
got on sale for $50
worked well in mac pro tower

Cons: Seagate used to be amazing, I used to buy them ONLY, until in the last year I have had 3 fail on me. Quality control must be gone...with that said I have been buying WD.

1 out of 5 eggsThe worst drives I've ever owned

Pros: Big storage.

Cons: I bought 2 of these drives in 2010 with the expectation (back then) that drive manufacturers surely would be on top of their game and not give users problematic drives anymore. I mean heck, hard drives have come a long way, haven't they? Boy, was I wrong.

After a few months of use, one drive started growing in Reallocated Sector Counts steadily over the next few weeks, which turned into months, which turned into years.

It's now 2014, and drive 1 is at 185 Reallocated, and drive 2 is at 104. Granted, they're still working, but they are REALLY degraded as far as speeds go now. I would never trust these drives for important storage.

The problem with these drives seems to be wide-spead, as a quick google search of this model takes you on a journey of posts about people saying this drive is horrible. It definitely comes down to CERTAIN drive models with Seagate being bad, as I have 2 other Seagates (not this model) which work okay (with the exception of one drive which has an End-To-End SMART error now) and were also purchased in 2010.

Regardless, this made me not trust Seagate anymore. I'm using these two drives as movie storage on a Plex server just to store movie downloads, so I'm not really bothered if the drives die. I could always redownload the movies.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor reliability

Pros: pretty standard "pros", when it worked

Cons: Noisy on spin-up.
Failed after about 18 months.

Other Thoughts: This is the second Seagate HDD that I've had in the last three years that has failed me with less than two years service. Hmm, in fact, all of my Seagate HDD's have failed me. After some period of time they start "clicking" on startup, then after a while, the clicking becomes permanent. My most current unit will now only work when lying flat, started "cold". After a couple of hours, even that position will start "clicking". I have totally lost faith in Seagate and will start buying only Western Digital drives until Seagate cleans up their act.
