1 out of 5 eggsThis is Only a BACKUP drive

Pros: Size, Hardware encryption

Cons: There is not any simple way to just use this drive as an attached Encrypted storage device that will ask for your password when first attached to a PC. The only way to encrypt data is to use the included Acronis TrueImage backup program (aka BlackArmor Backup).

I did a lot of presales reading on Seagate www and nowhere did it state that this was just a backup drive. I am going to return this drive and wait for them to ship something like their earlier encrypted products.

Also, they don't explain how long the password can be and if there is a built-in delay after three bad attempts to avoid the (simple) security work-around of just using a password cracking program to get at your 128-, 192- or 256-bit AES encrypted data.

Other Thoughts: Given the price premium for this security product much better pre-sales information needs to be provided regarding the TRUE usability and secure nature of this drive. Seagate so far has done a very poor job and trying to find a real HUMAN to ask questions is virtually impossible.

3 out of 5 eggsNever Received

Pros: Can't say, never received. I assume that it's a fine product.

Cons: I ordered this external drive on 7/20/09.

On 7/29/09 I contacted NewEgg to see why the order status still shows as Charged.

They said they'd contact the warehouse and E-Mail me.

I received an E-Mail about 6 hours later stating that the item is backordered. This is very unlike NewEgg to leave me hanging for 9 days on a backordered item.

Other Thoughts: The drive is still shown as being available to order, even though I was told last night that it's backordered.

I guess even NewEgg can't be perfect, but they're still the best out there, in my opinion.
