Pros: Quick, easy setup. Seamless network integration. Not the fastest device out there (per the tech reviews), but still plenty fast enough to serve HQ video via wireless or act as a centralized file storage box. It's a quiet unit. Excellent admin software with some advanced functionality. Long warranty.
Cons: None so far, it's a quiet unit, makes some noise but an acceptable level of it. I'm worried about what will happen when I need to upgrade a drive, not sure how easy it will be to clone an old drive to a new one.
Other Thoughts: I'm using it as configured from the factory, RAID I, for data centralization and security. Works fantastically well in this role.

No Technical Support
Reviewed By: Guido on 2/9/2010
Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: None
Cons: Vista 32bit keeps asking for a NAS 2D driver. The question has been asked in the knowledge base and Seagate apparently blames Microsoft. Seagate will not answer email questions about this product regardless of when it was purchased. Apparently, Seagate will only answer phone questions on the product for 30 days. After that you must pay for support.
Other Thoughts: The Seagate web site says this product has free email support. This is NOT TRUE, there is no free email support.
I have never see a response from Seagate in the knowledge base. It a customer sell help site.
Forget trying to get through on the phone. I've been listening to muzak for 30 minutes.
Look at the knowledge base before you buy this product. It has plenty of problems.
So, Seagate won't answer emails, won't answer questions on the knowledge base, and you can't get through to them on the phone. Basically they offer no technical support on this product.

Seems to work well except discover software
Reviewed By: on 2/23/2010
Tech Level: average - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Very inexpensive for 1TB of mirrored storage (via 2 1TB drives). The bundled backup software is decent.
Cons: The "Black Armor" discover software often cannot "discover" the drive. You can just browse to it's IP to manage, instead. You can see it with other network discovery tools and with Windows Explorer so I am not sure why the single purpose software gets clueless.
Other Thoughts: I installed this to backup 4 PC's at my local Church, to replace a home grown data-only backup scheme involving some scripts and shares. Full backups of each machine take a couple of hours, so I do the full backups weekly. The data backups are much quicker, so I do them nightly, staggered enough so that no two PC's are trying to do them at the same time.

Great for home use!
Reviewed By: David G. Lenz on 2/19/2010
Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: Speed: in RAID 1 (two hardrives mirroring same data) over a gigabit connection I could download at 40 megabytes/per second. This lets me stream 1080p high def content with no hesitation.
The power consumption + noise: I figured I would hide this somewhere to prevent hearing it, but its so quiet that I keep it on top of my desk so I can see it. It's visually appealing to look at. Also, the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is very low. When reading/writing from the drive, it uses about 18 watts, which at $.10/kWh is about $16 annually if it is running 24/7. It has an auto sleep mode which makes the TCO even lower. Compare this to a PC file server which can cost a few hundred dollars in electricity.
Cons: To some people this may be a con, but the interface may be a bit too simplistic. For example, there is a built in FTP server that allows you to set up users and permissions, but I can't find a way to see if anyone is currently logged in.
Other Thoughts: All in all I'm very pleased with this. The 2 TB unit has two one-terabyte drives and gives you the ability to choose whether you want more space (RAID 0) or more reliability (RAID 1). I opted for greater reliability.
