Increasingly, people are enjoying the benefits of always being connected, yet there still remains a gap in easily connecting people back to their content at home and sharing it with others. The DockStar network adapter reinvents how people think of anywhere access and the concept of sharing their digital files. It allows the FreeAgent Go portable hard drive to be added to a network, giving access to its content from anywhere within or outside of the home, as well as allowing for selective sharing of files with friends and family. In a matter of minutes a drive can become accessible through any Internet connected computer, as well as through an innovative iPhone application.
With simple installation and an intuitive web-based interface, the DockStar network adapter will change the way people control the access and sharing of their content by creating their own personal storage ‘clouds’ while keeping the security and privacy of the drives' content because it is located within their home. Users will also be able to deliver linked pictures and video to social networking sites, such as MySpace, Facebook and Twitter. The FreeAgent DockStar connects people and their experiences in a whole new way even though they might be thousands of miles apart.
Additionally, simple syndication takes on a new meaning when friends and family can receive RSS feeds of shares created to keep them informed of changes to the content. The DockStar network adapter also has three additional USB ports, allowing connection of up to four mass storage devices at a time, providing more to share and access whether you’re across the room or on the other side of the world.

Don't Bother!
- Pros: I guess if you need access to this drive from anywhere it would be considered a pro...
- Cons: You have to use the Pogoplug service to access this drive even though it is sitting right next to you. First year is free then it will cost you $30 a year. You have no access to the network settings on this device and no direct control of the drive letter. I figured I would keep it and connect it via USB but you can't even do that!
- Other Thoughts: If this is Seagate's entry to the NAS world they need to exit immediately. This is a total waste of time and money. I fell in love with the FreeAgent Go drives and USB docking stations long ago but they really missed the boat this time.

Manufacturer Response:My name is Jon van Bronkhorst – I am in Seagate’s retail product marketing group. Thanks for giving DockStar a try. I'd like to address your concerns. Seagate FreeAgent DockStar is designed to be simple network access and share. It is not a replacement for true NAS products - we have Seagate BlackArmor NAS products to meet those needs. The activation website and service with DockStar is for ease of use - it removes firewall and router configuration. The service finds and activates your DockStar. Once activated, you can enable SMB share through the WFS selection on the Settings page to have all attached USB storage devices show up on your network without further service requirement. The $30 fee that you refer to is for remote access and share only - you are right - the first year is included in the price of the product. But the product will continue to work inside your home network without any additional costs.
Locked Down
- Pros: Gigabit ethernet, 3 USB connections, looks nice.
- Cons: Quote:
"After service activation, access and share files with friends, over the internet — no special software required." Notice how you have to use a proprietary service so that you can LOCALLY access a device that's sitting ON YOUR DESK and connected to YOUR ROUTER.
- Other Thoughts: There are other similarly priced NAS adapters which allow you the freedom of installing applications on the adapter itself (like a torrent client for PC-less downloads). This one doesn't even allow you to ssh into a device you already own, and the specs do not list anything useful like RAM, CPU, etc.
I've taken 3 eggs from this product based on its functionality compared to what others have to offer for the same price, the fact that Seagate does not post any *real* tech specs about it, and the issue of not being able to map a drive letter to it unless I install their application on my computer.

Manufacturer Response:My name is Jon van Bronkhorst - I work in Seagate's retail product marketing group. Thanks for your comments on DockStar. Seagate FreeAgent DockStar is designed for simple network access and share. As such, we have made it simple to install with the activation website. This removes any router or firewall setup requirements. Also, with SMB shares enabled, you can map to the attached USB drives using a drive letter of your choice. I hope this helps.

Don't buy this. SERIOUSLY!
- Pros: This will make your go drive stand up, Potentially making it run cooler.
- Cons: I bought this from best buy under the impression that I simply hook it up to my drive and then plug an Ethernet cable into it. Well I was under the wrong impression. I hook it up and then pogoplug starts attacking my machine. I thought I wasn't going to have to pay anything else, the dock was already very expensive. This shouldn't be legal, I'm trying to hook it up so I can access it from my laptop in my bedroom, since it has only 1 usb port and I filled that up with a wireless receiver. I don't want to sign up with pogoplug and let everyone access my drive. I purchased an Ethernet dock for my Go drive (which I love), not a pogoplug.
- Other Thoughts: Please don't do one of those crummy manufacturer responses can you just admit in your head that you have made a crummy item.
Primadonna TechDorks Need not apply
- Pros: Extremely well fore-thought product for the technically challenged, works like a champ for everyone, even those who overthink it...! This thing is GREAT for folks who don't wanna have to pay these whiney techs to come install it for them!
- Cons: $30 a year is NOT a con. If you do NOT possess my skills in IT, you should pay $30 a year for the capability. I think I would like to see a Blackberry and a Windows Mobile app for this thing. PLEASE?! I have both phones. I am sure Androids and others would appreciate it as well. Get hopping on the development Seagate. Don't listen to these other whiners.
- Other Thoughts: If you appreciate being able to get to your files from anywhere, send photos/videos to you home for archival or manipulating, etc... and either don't have time in your fun, challenging, IT-job day, or simply aren't a knowledgeable IT geek, this product is for you.
Also, I have several USB drives from 160GB to 1TB that I am ecstatic to be able to aggregate at home into a larger storage device! I also have a full rack, a .com and a web-hosting service with plenty of static IPs running from my home.
To the DHCP whiners: ever hear of a DHCP reservation? Wah!
You 1 and 2 Eggers should be absolutely ASHAMED of yourselves. Get a life!
Literally Zero Documentation
- Pros: Cheap, nice specs, probably a good product.
- Cons: Good lord, not a spec of documentation anywhere except Seagate's exceptionally buggy hanging forums and patronizing windows 7 specific video tutorials. Notice that a seagate employee came in here and said with SMB enabled you can do all kinds of stuff, like actually use this thing. Yeah, where?
- Other Thoughts: Good job geniuses. 12 hours from losing me as a customer for life. Read the instructions? What are you a shill? There are none, anywhere. Hate to give this a 1 rating if maybe they come around, but the fact that the only support seems to be from Marketing kinda makes me wish I could give a 0.
