Increasingly, people are enjoying the benefits of always being connected, yet there still remains a gap in easily connecting people back to their content at home and sharing it with others. The DockStar network adapter reinvents how people think of anywhere access and the concept of sharing their digital files. It allows the FreeAgent Go portable hard drive to be added to a network, giving access to its content from anywhere within or outside of the home, as well as allowing for selective sharing of files with friends and family. In a matter of minutes a drive can become accessible through any Internet connected computer, as well as through an innovative iPhone application.
With simple installation and an intuitive web-based interface, the DockStar network adapter will change the way people control the access and sharing of their content by creating their own personal storage ‘clouds’ while keeping the security and privacy of the drives' content because it is located within their home. Users will also be able to deliver linked pictures and video to social networking sites, such as MySpace, Facebook and Twitter. The FreeAgent DockStar connects people and their experiences in a whole new way even though they might be thousands of miles apart.
Additionally, simple syndication takes on a new meaning when friends and family can receive RSS feeds of shares created to keep them informed of changes to the content. The DockStar network adapter also has three additional USB ports, allowing connection of up to four mass storage devices at a time, providing more to share and access whether you’re across the room or on the other side of the world.
I was initially confused but I like the device now

Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: Plug in any (up to four) USB hard drives and make available over Ethernet and/or via the Web. The device is simple to setup (caveat). Works well and performance is great (I did not test, just my overall impression is that it transfers files fast to and from my GO drive. PogoPlug is a very cool service.
Cons: It is way to simple, really. So simple that I couldn't figure out how to use it. Complaints about the documentation are valid. PogoPlug? It is a Seagate product!
Seagate should have thought to compete with PogoPlug, or pay them to create a Seagate branded service to a.) avoid confusion b.) to keep me from having to pay again c.) so they could at least provide access to the settings even if I choose not to pay for the files over internet access.
I don't even know what happens when my year of PogoPlug expires. How would I enable/disable WFS then?
I recieved my DockStar as a gift. If it was my money i would have been really mad over the confusion and lack of documentation.
Other Thoughts: I was thrown off by the whole PogoPlug thing at first because so many products come with software and I don't like installing things on my computer unless I know it is useful and safe.
I did not even realize what PogoPlug was until I was away from my home and my backup was running (to the dockstar) and then I went, "Oh! That is what PogoPlug is."
Eventually I needed access to the device via it's IP Address and I was a bit confused that I had to login to my.pogoplug.com and turn on WFS (Windows File Sharing) and to be honest what if I don't choose to renew the pogoplug account? Can I then still do things like enable or disable WFS?
Ultimately it does work, and I am happy with it. I am not at all happy about the amount of confusion the device and the related PogoPlug interface has caused.
Seagate deserves the criticism for this device, but if you are looking at the DockStar, know that it does work well and is very useful. Now that you know you will likely buy and be

Don't Bother!

Pros: I guess if you need access to this drive from anywhere it would be considered a pro...
Cons: You have to use the Pogoplug service to access this drive even though it is sitting right next to you. First year is free then it will cost you $30 a year. You have no access to the network settings on this device and no direct control of the drive letter. I figured I would keep it and connect it via USB but you can't even do that!
Other Thoughts: If this is Seagate's entry to the NAS world they need to exit immediately. This is a total waste of time and money. I fell in love with the FreeAgent Go drives and USB docking stations long ago but they really missed the boat this time.
Manufacturer Response:My name is Jon van Bronkhorst – I am in Seagate’s retail product marketing group. Thanks for giving DockStar a try. I'd like to address your concerns. Seagate FreeAgent DockStar is designed to be simple network access and share. It is not a replacement for true NAS products - we have Seagate BlackArmor NAS products to meet those needs. The activation website and service with DockStar is for ease of use - it removes firewall and router configuration. The service finds and activates your DockStar. Once activated, you can enable SMB share through the WFS selection on the Settings page to have all attached USB storage devices show up on your network without further service requirement.
The $30 fee that you refer to is for remote access and share only - you are right - the first year is included in the price of the product. But the product will continue to work inside your home network without any additional costs.

Was great until it Broke

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Device was exatly what I was looking for. I was able to quickly turn my pile of external drives into a network file server. The android phone app was killer as well. Was streaming music over the internet to my phone from my leagal music collection at home. The pogoplug service was easy to use and SMB support allowed me to map drives native in Windows 7 on all 7 of my homes PCs.
Cons: The deivce quit responding to the network on hour 72 of operation. Checkec the DHCP table on my router I noticed the Dockstar was missing. Used a sniffer and found the device was sending noise but not packets. So great idea bad hardware it appears.
Other Thoughts: Again has all the functionality I wanted but only lasted 72 hours before it failed. So if you want something to play with for a weekend go fot it, but if you want a rilable solution for your data I would look elsewhere.

Don't buy this. SERIOUSLY!

Pros: This will make your go drive stand up, Potentially making it run cooler.
Cons: I bought this from best buy under the impression that I simply hook it up to my drive and then plug an Ethernet cable into it. Well I was under the wrong impression. I hook it up and then pogoplug starts attacking my machine. I thought I wasn't going to have to pay anything else, the dock was already very expensive. This shouldn't be legal, I'm trying to hook it up so I can access it from my laptop in my bedroom, since it has only 1 usb port and I filled that up with a wireless receiver. I don't want to sign up with pogoplug and let everyone access my drive. I purchased an Ethernet dock for my Go drive (which I love), not a pogoplug.
Other Thoughts: Please don't do one of those crummy manufacturer responses can you just admit in your head that you have made a crummy item.
