1 out of 5 eggsSeagate drives are not reliable

Pros: Very easy to install and operate.
User interface is simple, but handles everything I needed for a home backup solution

Cons: Reliability, noisy, green feature is questionable, hard drive life expectancy is poor, doesn't handle RAID, not user serviceable, poor warranty support, slow USD speeds when backing up to USB connected drive

Other Thoughts: The Seagate NAS is super easy to install and configure. I had the device operational within 10 minutes of unpacking.

The device is slow, but was accessible from all my devices (Windows 7, Win 8, Android, and iOS). Speed was slow when trying to stream HD content on a 802.11n network, but acceptable for all my needs.

This device should be used for people who want to share a USB drive and its contents across multiple computers.

However as a true NAS this device is inadequate. You need to backup the content on other drives, defeating teh purpose of a NAS.

It cannot handle multiple drives, and given the poor reliability of Seagate drives this device will fail within 2 years. At which point you will loose your files.

1 out of 5 eggsBlack Armor 110 Buyer Beware

Pros: Product none. Call center agents are STELLAR. I have gotten to know these people due to the number of times I had to call to get the BA 110 replaced.

Cons: I have replaced this drive 3 times in 2 years. Quality sucks.

Other Thoughts: I give the product a 1 only because it will not let me give a zero.

Pros: It's a nice little size and comes with a lot of space to store files in.

Cons: This thing is soooooo slow and it's starting to click like crazy. Something is definitely wrong with it.

Other Thoughts: I bought this NAS thinking it would be a great way to backup my all my media. It worked alright for a while, but a few months ago it started to do this really heavy clicking sound that started to scare me. I've heard this click before and I pretty much feel it's going to just die on me anytime. I've actually just turned it off for the past couple months cause I'm scared to lose all my memories. The ironic part is that I bought it as a way to keep them safe and backed up and now I don't know what to do with it. I used to trust Seagate drives so much and recommend them to friends, but now I stay away like the plague.

1 out of 5 eggsBA 110 2TB

Pros: It's quiet. My wife has tremendously good hearing. Evry PC I built made too much noise. The Black Armor does not.

Doesn't matter if you transfer through network or USB, the ***** thing is incredibly slow!!!

About 5mbps through network and about 7mbps NAS to USB.

No problem putting small files on it (unless you want to transfer many of them), but a movie in HD (abt. 4 GB) takes forever!

So don't let Seagate fool you by saying it's your network, USB is almost as slow.

Bottomline is that it's the device that's so unbelievably slow. Not your network.

Other Thoughts: I've build a very quiet PC from spare parts (again): old case, lots of isolation sheets inside, cut two big holes in the case with Scythe 5DB 120mm fans, underclocked the CPU and filled it up with old HHD's (gonna add the drive from the BA110 later). Got almost 4 TB now and it's FAST! Only had to buy the two fans for € 16.50 a piece.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Performer and great SW package

Pros: Great size, easy to set up, DOES require some network knowledge, great backup SW.......Includes the Acronis SW which is used widely in the business world.

Cons: Sometimes its kind of confusing in navigating, but again, if you are using a NAS, then you SHOULD have some basic network knowledge.

Other Thoughts: Stop complaining about this product. I've been using Seagate drives since they had the 20MB scsi drives and you had to use debug to low level format your drive. If you have problems, call them for help.

1 out of 5 eggsToo slow to be useful

Pros: The installation was relatively simple. Not plug and play, but the installation CD loads a "discovery" program that finds the device on your network and allows you to configure it.

Cons: File transfers are painfully slow--so slow that it renders the device useless for backing up your hard drive. When I tried to transfer my documents folder, it started at 5 Mb/sec, but gradually slowed to 20k/sec. Useless!!

Other Thoughts: I was going to throw it away, but I pried open the case and removed the hard drive, which was a 7200 rpm Seagate Barracuda with a standard SATA connector. So it wasn't a total loss!

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Alan,

This reply is from Seagate Support. We noticed your review and wanted to comment on your experience with our BlackArmor NAS110 Network drive. There can be a variety of reasons for slow network performance. Certainly it is not typical for this drive to have transfer rates that were as slow as you mentioned. For maximum performance, I would make sure the drive is on a wired network. Additionally, I've listed a web address below that deals with potential network bottlenecks that can hamper performance as well. This article deals with GoFlex Home but most of the suggestions can apply to this drive as well.

In the future, please give us a call first so we can help troubleshoot the network problems you have with our drives. Opening the drive case voids the warranty on the drive so it is best to troubleshoot with us first in insure that your warranty is preserved. Our contact number for Techncial Support is 800-732-4283 (use Network option). There is no charge for network support.

Best Regards,
Seagate Support

1 out of 5 eggsSlow

Pros: Great web interface. Built-in USB to NAS file transfer utility.

Cons: Terribly slow transfer rate. I bought this to replace a very old NAS. The older NAS killed this thing on file transfer rates. Playing videos stored on this device was next to impossible.

Other Thoughts: Avoid at all costs.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Seagate Customer,

This response is from Seagate Support and I'd like to apologize for the problem you had with the BlackArmor NAS 110. Slow performance could be an indication of network bottlenecks due to configuration differences between the previous NAS product and this one. It would also be a good idea to verify that you have the latest firmware on the NAS:

If none of this helps with the issues you are having, then I would suggest speaking with a network agent directly on this issue so we can get the BlackArmor NAS performing better for you. Here is a web address with contact information should you wish to speak with a network support representative directly. There is no charge for network phone support.

Best Regards,
Seagate Support

4 out of 5 eggsDoes exactly what I wanted

Pros: Small, simple setup yet flexible also. I generally like this drive, so I bought one at work also. Between the two of them one failed within a month, but Seagate replaced it quickly and it has been running great ever since, over 6 months.

Cons: Unit could be faster, but that could be my network being only 100MB. The backup feature to an attached USB drive seems very slow, I think it should be much faster than it is.

2 out of 5 eggsSeagate 110

Pros: Good speed getting files from unit. Good sotrage for my needs. Was looking for extra storage but the back up feature was a nice add on.

Cons: Had to return first unit because one of the disks failed. Seagate makes you pay for the shipping! Not my fault the thing died! Couldn't get Global Access to work on the second unit. Tech support was very helpful. But she advised there was a problem with the second unit (which they knew was a common problem) and it had to be returned for replacement. That is where I am now. I argued against having to pay for shipping again and they said they would send me a shipping label. Two problems each within 30 days of setting up the units- not good. Asked if I could trade it in, pay more for another unit (upgrade) and they said NO. When returning the unit the first time, it took almost 4 weeks to get the replacement back.

Other Thoughts: If you know there are problems with the unit, I suggest being a bit more liberal with customer satisfaction. Seagate should pay for the shipping and allow upgrades if the customer requests it. I was willing to pay for it afteall!

1 out of 5 eggsGet what you pay for, if you're lucky

Pros: Best case: you get a cheap and slow NAS and you only need the features that work right.

Cons: Worst case: the drive fails after a couple of months (like mine and many others) and you have to return it for another unit that's no good either since the problem is really poor engineering and cheap quality.

Other Thoughts: If you are considering buying this NAS do yourself a big favor and look at all the problems posted in Seagate's forum for this product and look at the poor support Seagate offers (read some of Seagate's responses). It's pretty obvious Seagate knows this product has major problems. Newegg has lots of better NAS products than this!!!

Manufacturer Response:

This product did have some drive issues in early-mid 2010 with this specific product. Seagate has fixed this issue and this should no longer be an issue for the NAS 110 2TB.
