1 out of 5 eggsStutters like crazy

Pros: very quick at booting up... not much else.

Cons: Anytime I ran programs like Imovie, Iphoto, photoshop, etc. The apps would start stuttering and then would completely stopped. I'm done with Seagate

Other Thoughts: I installed this in my new 15" I5 Macbook Pro.

2 out of 5 eggsSever Performance Degredation

Pros: Well reviewed, saw performance increase briefly.

Cons: Immediately notice drive spindown issue.
Drive is loud.
Can feel vibration when typing.

Other Thoughts: Very likely, I have a defective drive, and am returning it as such. So keep that in mind when reading this review.

My first boot was incredibly slow. I thought something had gone very wrong. I had a brief spat of increased performance, not none of this "super-fast boot" stuff. Some apps did improve with use (I launched/quit multiple times to guarantee cacheing). But then performance degraded sharply, definite signs of impending failure.

I previously had a Hitachi 500GB 7200 (and I hate Hitachi), which performed better overall, and while the Seagate was noticeably faster on cached data, it was not AMAZINGLY faster.

I see a future for this hybrid idea if SSDs stay expensive. But this definitely feels like an Rev1 product.

1 out of 5 eggscrashed my os

Pros: hybrid does speed-up apps by a few seconds, but that's about it.

Cons: One day, out of the clear blue, it stopped working. Everything froze, I had to reinstall W7. The install procedure had to run an extensive diskchk, which identified numerous problems.

Other Thoughts: I really wish this technology was ready for the general public.

1 out of 5 eggsbad choice

Pros: Died after 2 months. Couldn't get to my desktop icons, fortunately I had 2 HD's in my laptop, so I was able to move my data over. I tried to install XP, but the installation would not proceed because of bad HD. I finally installed W7 which went through a massive disk repair routine before installing.

Cons: Hybrid works, but only saves a few secounds here and there. Mainly a gimic at this point.

Other Thoughts: I got another bad s--gate, you would think that I would learn by now, but I really wanted to try the hybrid technology.

5 out of 5 eggsExceeds All Expectations

Pros: On my Dell XPS M1330 laptop, this drive delivered a marked improvement in speed when booting and in mundane tasks like moving between applications and utilities. Superfast now. It replaced a 7200 rpm 160GB Seagate drive, so I can only attribute the leap in performance to the onboard 4GB cache.

I used the Seagate DiscWizard utility (free from Seagate's website) to clone the partitions and reallocate the space. It takes some fiddling to get all the unallocated space into the main storage partition, but once I figured that out, it was effortless and snappy to create the new drive. Don't just let it reallocated proportionally if you have, e.g., a recovery partition, or you'll be throwing space away.

It blue screened on the first boot, and I had to allow Windows to clear the hiberfile before it would boot. After that, everything worked perfectly.

As far as noise, I don't know what people are talking about. This drive is as quiet as any platter-based can be.

Cons: A bit high on the $/GB compared to conventional drives, but a bargain compared to a SSD.

5 out of 5 eggsThis is my second one . . .

Pros: I liked the one on my home laptop so much that when my company refused to upgrade my laptop I just sprung for another drive with my own money. It's wonderful on Windows 7, XP doesn't seem to gain as much. I would by a third if I needed it. Good price for the benefits especially if you remember how much we were paying for 500GB drives a year ago or so.

Cons: Can't really find any. The mysterious lockups that others are mentioning just don't happen to me in either OS - at least any more often than MS Windows already causes on it's own.

Other Thoughts: I would appreciate a 1TB version :)

5 out of 5 eggsExceeded my expectations - Excellent drive

Pros: Amazing. I have a 2.33 GHZ Macbook Pro with 4gb's of RAM. I thought it booted fast before this drive was installed. It takes 3 restarts to fill the cache, but once it is filled it boots lightning fast. Write speed is excellent.

I have owned several Seagate drives over the years and this is not only the fastest but also the quietest.

Cons: No complaints. Drive is overall excellent, would recommend to anyone who needs to replace their hd.

Other Thoughts: If the drive is sold out, wait. It is well worth the wait.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive.

Pros: Applications launch lightning fast. Boot-up time has decreased noticeably. MUCH more affordable than a SSD.

Cons: None yet....

Other Thoughts: Great performance boost for a great price. (late 2008 15" unibody MPB 2.53GHz)

5 out of 5 eggsAll About Expectations

Pros: It gets me to Windows 7 desktop quickly. That is why I bought it. I didn't buy it to get SSD performance. The programs I use most load faster.

Cons: I have none so far. I copied my original 500GB 5400 RPM drive and it has worked flawlessly since.

Other Thoughts: I know some folks have had issues with the drive not working at all but my drive has given me no problems.
If you are thinking about this drive as a cheap way to get 500GB at SSD speeds, don't get it. It is NOT an SSD. It's an HDD not SSD. I bought it because I hated waiting 45 seconds or more to get to desktop so I could do what I turned my laptop on to do and this things does it very well. For me the extra cost over a normal HDD was worth getting to desktop in half the time without paying way too much for any SSD with no space. I play games and I need space for those games and with most laptops still only having space for either HDD or a SSD, this was a no-brainer.
Great hard drive!
