4 out of 5 eggsI made it work

Pros: On 12/2/2012 I wrote an evaluation of GoFlex Home on the Newegg website. This evaluation revises the earlier one. The speed was slow and remains low, but only when accessed from a wi-fi connected computer. When accessed from an Ethernet-connected computer the speed is at least ten times faster. I consider this to be a very reasonable and useable speed. In all fairness, this item is mentioned in the user’s manual.

Cons: I received word from Seagate Support that in order to share the printer, it has to be a network-ready printer. Well, it appears that this well-publicized feature is virtually worthless. If it is a network printer, why would I connect it to GoFlex when I could connect it directly to the network?
I finally stumbled across on why the GoFLex appears and disappears from the network. When installing it, the installer gives you a choice of a “Typical” installation, or to install it without installing any software on your computer. I installed it first on my Windows 8 computer, and the software was not yet compatible, so I installed it using the second option. I did the same on my Windows 7 laptop. Well, this does not work! The GoFLex kept on going on and off the network at very random times, and could not make it reappear to save my soul. Then I made a full installation on the Windows 7 laptop. It worked like a charm. Now GoFlex appears and stays on the network very reliably, and accessible from both computers. The only drawback is that the laptop has to be on, otherwise GoFLex disappears. The full solution is that Seagate needs to come up with Windows 8 –compatible software.

Other Thoughts: The bottom line is that if you plan to use it with Windows 8, don’t do it until the software is upgraded. If you plan to use it with Windows 7 and plan to use the Home group feature of Windows 7, don’t do it because Windows 7 Home group has a fatal flaw. Without using Home group, it works just fine. I am very well satisfied with its performance and price. I only hope Seagate hurries up and come up with new software so that I can also upgrade my laptop to Windows 8.

3 out of 5 eggsCannot make it work

Pros: : It appears to be very well built. The drive snaps smartly and solidly onto the base. It can run for hours and stays cool as a cucumber. For all practical purposes it is completely quiet. Seagate gets 4 stars for the hardware only because the drive is soooo-slooooow at about 2 to 2.5 MB/s

Cons: : I spent a full day trying to get a printer to work with it, to no avail. I submitted a problem ticket to Seagate – hopefully they will help me.
One other problem I am having is that the GoFlex net drive periodically disappears from the network, and I have not found a way to make it reappear at my will, although sometime later it will reappear – at its own will. This problem is not caused by instability of my network because every other device on the network remains very stable – I never drop any connections (except the GoFLex net drive). There must be something that triggers this on/off network problem, but I have not figured it out. If I cannot reliably access it when I need it is useless to me. After I fix the printer problem I will submit a problem ticket to Seagate for this one. If I don’t find a solution, it is going back.
Another curios behavior is that when the net drive disappears the two GoFLex Media Servers remain on the network. I think these are for streaming and remote access. I don’t know why two, but I don’t have any interest in them, so it does not matter.
Seagate has put all its emphasis on this gadget as a streaming/remote access device – and almost none as a network drive. Seagate gets one star for the software.

Other Thoughts: I have a desktop computer and a laptop. My plan is to use the desktop as the master computer where I do all my work. Have the GoFLex as a back-up device, to update all my files in the laptop in preparation for travel, and to occasionally share a printer with the laptop at home using the wireless feature of the GoFlex. I have no need for the remote access feature or the streaming feature because I have to travel with all my files. I am a developer and I cannot afford to depend on unknown connections.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Little Drive!

Pros: The drive has a nice, small form factor. It's clear from the design that you could use multiple (SG) drives with the same base. I plugged it into the wall and my router, powered it on, and my Windows 7 laptop saw the media device immediately. I didn't use their install CD, so I had to go to the IP address to do manual setup. The interface is simple enough. I turned off the option to access my files from the internet, but I may try that now that I learned there's an iPhone app to access them (could come in pretty handy!).

I used their web interface to set GoFlex Personal Storage (which I'm using for Media streaming) to be accessible to media devices, and my Xbox saw it right away. I navigated into my Movies folder, started a movie, and was able to rewind, fast-forward, pause, without any lag once it loaded (10-20 seconds to get going). More than I can say for streaming from Windows Media Center, PlayOn, or TVersity (my old solutions). Very happy with the Media streaming aspect.

Cons: During setup, I had to create a user acct and phone home to Seagate to activate it. I don't need that. I just wanted to use it locally. Additionally, I wish you could rename the folders on the drive. Right now I'm using GoFlex Backup for Backup and GoFlex Personal Storage for Media, but I don't know why these names aren't changeable.

The backup write speed is not as fast as I'd like. I got 20Mbps over 802.11n, 35 Mbps wired. It's not that bad, and it works for what I need it to (backup, and I scheduled it to go overnight anyway), but I wonder if there are some settings I could change to make it faster.

Other Thoughts: I haven't plugged in my printer to the USB port yet, but I plan on doing that tonight.

1 out of 5 eggsProduct designed by people witchout vision !

Pros: Nice design

Cons: *Need internet to work !!!!!!???1?!?1?!??! What you guys at seagate were thinking ???? Zero vision NI NADA ZERO
* Cannot change default shares ??!?!!?!?!?!?!? Again what you guys thinking ??? What were you thinking ??? unbelivable poor product

DO NOT BUY THIS flop !!!! BUY WD LIVE BOOK !

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Zal,

This reply is from Seagate Support. We noticed your review and wanted to comment on your experience with your GoFlex Home drive. Internet access is required for the Home drive to allow the remote access features to work properly. Without internet access, the Home drive would not be accessible beyond your home network.

There are options available to change or modify default shares. Additional shares can also be created or modified if needed. For additional information on how to manage shares, please refer to our Users Guide listed here:

5 out of 5 eggsgood price on entry level NAS

Pros: I bought this mainly because of the low cost for a network attached storage, got this on a special promotion.
It turns out great! I use this device to set up a home network that would allow me to store my music and movie collection on a wireless home network, and to use as a backup for the rest of my computer.

Cons: It is a bit slow compare to my other NAS units. but at this price I won't complain too much.

2 out of 5 eggsKeeps vanishing off the network

Pros: Spacious, plenty of room, love the detachable drive housing. Very reasonable price for NAS.

Cons: Not reliable, vanishes regularly off the network requiring reboot of the drive. Replaced and new drive exhibits same behavior after time. Seagate warranty return costs $$$ if you want to pull the data off your failing drive onto a replacement. Tech support consists of "did you run our diagnostic?" and "Yep, it's dying, let's get you a replacement."

Other Thoughts: Seagate potential monopoly of the consumer market seems to be driving quality control to the toilet. In the last 3 years, 4 Maxtor/Seagate products, 3 needed replacement, and we're working on replacement #2 for my most recent purchace, should I decide to deal with their tech support again.. Now the consumer warranties are shorter. Who would have thought it?

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Seagate Customer,

This reply is from Seagate Support. We noticed your review and wanted to comment on your experience with our GoFlex Home drive. Certainly it is not typical or expected for these drives to behave this way. There may be a variety of reasons why your Home drive is periodically not detected on your network. If you have the drive connected by a wireless router, you may want to test on wired network to make sure the issue is not related to a wifi problem. Try the drive on a different network connection if this is an option. Also check the drive LED status when the drive is not recognized to see if any error conditions are present as well. Here is a support link to LED status lights:

The following Home troubleshooter also should help in determining the problem with the drive as well. Please reference this support article:

5 out of 5 eggsCool!

Pros: I reviewed the 3 Gig version of this little wonder after adding it to my network. Easy setup and a real no brainer after that. Purchased this for a friend to setup on there network. Suggest always go bigger.

Cons: If you tell others be ready to help them install. :-)

Other Thoughts: Always think when buying a home storage unit. Where will I be in a year with my overall storage needs? Bigger now or upgrade to bigger soon?

2 out of 5 eggsBig Brother?

Pros: Seagate Drive, Great Looking, Capable Hardware, Inexpensive, Upgradeable.

Cons: SOFTWARE- You need to register online, which transfers your Administrative Username and Password to Seagate (maybe Axentra) and then opens a backdoor to "support" using UPNP or if disabled, a VPN / SSH-tunnel, which will likely punch a hole in your external firewall too. So now you have not only compromised the security of your storage device, but your entire network and everything connected to it. With all of the laws in this country, why isn't this illegal? It would be at my peril to accuse anyone of spying on private data, and I have no proof it is happening (yet) but why disrespect your customers by even the appearance of impropriety? I guess the most valuable commodity in this country now, is the knowledge of what everyone is doing. Question is, who is buying that commodity?

Other Thoughts: If you do not like the included software, Seagate support supplies directions on how to access the drive with not much more that a web browser and IP address. The drive uses its own DNS to handle access requests, not the one you or your internet service provider specified.

5 out of 5 eggsGoFlexHome

Pros: Using this NAS in combination with third party backup software (StorageCraft/ShadowProtect) and it works without problem. Have recommended to numerous clients who are also very satisfied. If you have problems configuring this device on your network you should probably hire someone to do if for you.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If you use the essentially free backup software included with this device you get what you pay for.

3 out of 5 eggsSeagate GoFlex Home NAS

Pros: - Seagate drive inside so you get that no matter what

- Purports to work as Time Machine drive for 2 Macs plus PC/Mac NAS all on one drive, which would be neat trick if it worked with OSX Lion (No Time Capsule with Lion - yet). Apple changed something in the file structure and sprang it on all the NAS vendors apparently. ?Firmware fix

- I really like the design for the dock and interchangeable drives. FINALLY someone thought to make something like this (small footprint for the home user) that has a network plug on it without putting it in a big loud $200 NAS box. NIC connection allows deployment anywhere in the network vs. tethered to one PC - good job Seagate for finally getting the format right - I've been waiting for someone to come up with this platform for years (too bad you blew it with the software...) 2 stars off for mislabeling the product and confusing your customer. This "coulda been a contenda..."

- Got it on sale at WalMart (sorry Newegg they beat you this ti

Cons: The Software is per Seagate Cust Service's own words on another review here apparently intended for the Noob. If so, then the GUI is not nearly intuitive enough, and assumes WAY TOO MUCH about what the average user will want to do with this drive. The packaging says it will "access files and backup multiple PC's" - OK, then why do I have to set this up and manage it like a password protected FTP server with an account for remote access and all that - this isn't even mentioned on the Packaging! I just want an easily swappable drive with easy LAN connectivity and maybe some partitioning options, mapped to my networked computers. Yes, provide software to make synching or backing up easy, that's fine. But why do all the NAS products try to reinvent the wheel? All new routers will serve up remote access, media streaming, printer sharing, etc.

Seagate, just focus on the hardware, because you're actually on to something there with these docks and interchangeable adapters. Very coo

Other Thoughts: If the software didn't constrain the product's use so much, I'd probably be quite happy with it. The browser interface is fairly easy to use, I just don't understand why they tried to make it be half hard drive half router/server -- by definition it cannot be used or connect to the LAN or WiFi without hooking it to a router, and all new routers provide for all of this extra functionality (remote access, media streaming, print server) anyway, and do it better!

The software for setup as a Time Machine backup for 2 Macs was actually VERY easy - until Lion crashed it. It may work well with previous OSX versions, and hopefully firmware patch will fix it for Lion. Not having to fuss with Mac Partitioning for Time Machine drives is very nice. That plus network accessed storage all on one drive is a very slick idea.

Hopefully I can "hack" around the software like previous reviewer mentioned to get the drive mapped the way I want it. Seagate - redo the software if you want this to se

We appreciate your feedback about the design and the software very much.
Your input about the latter has been passed along to product development to be taken into consideration with upcoming releases.

Updating the firmware may resolve the issues you’ve been experiencing with the drive in Mac OS Lion:
