2 out of 5 eggsJust OK

Pros: -Decent value of the storage you get (3TB of disk-failure-protected RAID1 storage; 6TB of non-protected RAID0 storage)
-It's a NAS

Cons: -HORRENDOUSLY SLOW (average between 2-5Mbps over a 1Gb LAN)
-Disks are loud
-Using it as a media server is completely unreliable, rendering the feature useless
-Admin web interface is clunky and lacks many useful features
-Help documentation is incomplete and missing lots of useful information and instructions
-Power button feels cheap and performance is poor (you have to hit a "sweet spot" for it to work)

Other Thoughts: Since this NAS was available at a very fair price I gave it the benefit of the doubt, despite poor online reviews. I use it daily and, besides the media server feature, it works for what I need it for (albeit at a very slow pace). I would highly recommend researching other NAS devices before settling for this one.

1 out of 5 eggsDo Not Buy

Pros: 6TB of storage for a relatively low price.

Cons: It doesn't work very well with Active Directory as advertised, and Seagate support is next to useless. After only a few months in use we have started getting "Thermal Shutdown" issues. The device is in a temperature controlled server room with unrestricted airflow on each side, with even the vast bulk of the bottom exposed. After it shut itself down the last time, I can no longer connect via Windows Shares. It simply says the password is wrong.

The interface is clunky and annoying to use.

I don't suggest anyone buy this. Take the money and build an Atom based NAS and save yourself the headache.

Other Thoughts: We called Seagate support to help with the Active Directory integration since there is nothing that explicitly mentions AD in the interface. After the "technician" told us that a .local extension wasn't a FQDN, even for an internal domain, we decided we were on our own.

I wouldn't even give it 1 Egg if not required to.

1 out of 5 eggsHorribly Slow

Pros: 3TB of mirrored space on a NAS.

Cons: - Extremely slow. Upgraded firmware.
- (auto-firmware update didn't work, needed to do manually).
Still extremely slow. (3MB/sec). I have a Linux unit on the same subnet same switch and I can get 30MB/sec on that unit but this is a TENTH the speed.
- Makes bizarre thumping noises.
- Auto discovery didn't work, had to see what address it used form the DHCP server. Lame discover tool doesn't work.

Other Thoughts: Junk. This unit has to go back.

3 out of 5 eggsBe careful to understand licenses

Pros: Client system backup, Bare Metal Restore over network; Local backup (USB device to NAS, NAS to USB device); NAS to NAS backup

Cons: none so far.

Other Thoughts: BlackArmor devices include 5 licenses of their Windows backup software. To get support for the 20 computers, you'll have to buy Additional License 5-Pack at $100/pack. So that would be $300.00 addition dollars to support the 20 computers.
