5 out of 5 eggsGreat Portable Drives

Pros: So I purchased two of these drives to replace a (perceived) failing WD drive. All I can say is that they're awesome! No complaints, no problems. They've traveled all over the world with me (I work in Afghanistan) and I don't know that I could've had a better drive. A total bonus to these is that I can take off the SATA-USB3 adapter and use it on bare hard drives I need to retrieve data from!

Cons: None! Buy them if you can find them!

Other Thoughts: Great little drive! Will continue to purchase Seagate products as they have been good to me!

4 out of 5 eggsSeagate

Pros: It's small, and portable, and its from seagate

Cons: The USB cable seems cheap, unlike in their older model, where it was nice and thick

Other Thoughts: I have always bought a seagate, since three of my western digital have failed on me.

2 out of 5 eggsGood if you get it to work.

Pros: Plenty of storage for a 2.5 drive.
Come's in handy if you need to travel and can't bring your desktop.

Cons: -Drive has been having power issues after the second month.
-Windows doesn't always recognize.
-Get's really frustrating when you're moving files and this thing stops responding, then you have to start over.

Other Thoughts: The first two months were great. This drive is only 5400rpm, but I worry the most about capacity than speed when it comes to a storage drive. If you happen to get a bad drive like I did, it'll be a pain for sure. 3 eggs down because it's mostly unusable since month 3.

4 out of 5 eggsRuns well, some unnecessary features.

Pros: It's an external drive with the latest USB 3.0 output, what else is there to know? It doesn't require an external power brick, so it has less bulk than many other choices.

Cons: The USB connector that snaps in to the back of the unit is modular, allowing for different connections to be used. This may seem like a neat feature, but ultimately I have no use for it and it adds more bulk and another point of failure. If you want, you can get a HDMI module and use the drive as a media server, but there are plenty of other options in this field.

Other Thoughts: Be aware that this drive isn't as slim as it could be, as the modular feature adds a significant amount of bulk (relative to the size of the drive). If you want the most portable drive, this isn't it. Otherwise, it works fine! I was worried at first that my drive was malfunctioning, as it only worked in my USB 2.0 ports, but I found that my laptop power settings were set to turn off USB 3.0 when unplugged. A quick adjustment and restart, and the drive works great. Not the drive's fault, but be aware that it can happen.

4 out of 5 eggsCompact and good spec

Pros: Good design and good quality. It's light and resistant. Cable is not too short nor too long.

Cons: I am used to smaller portable HD (rikiki) so it could be a bit smaller.

3 out of 5 eggsMac Issues

Pros: Great price. It's fairly quick on my Windows desktop at work. It was fairly quick on my Mac laptop when it was reading it... I actually have two of these drives that were working fairly well.

Cons: My Mac decided to stop recognizing the drive last night. It's formatted NTFS, since I share it between my MacBook and my Windows desktop at work. My Mac shows it in system profiler, but won't mount it to the desktop. So... yeah, I have 2 TB of video and music that only work on my work computer, which gives them a 50/50 shot of being wiped by the SysAdmins at any point during the day. No support on Seagate's website. They say it's Apple's fault, and their best suggestion is to "get the GoFlex designed for Macs." Forum discussions and questions are unanswered from months ago. Oh, and I'm at an APO, so I can't even send it back to Newegg because I'm past the time limit.

Other Thoughts: 1 TB+ of video is pretty much dead to me. So thanks, Seagate, for the shiny black paperweight on my desk.

2 out of 5 eggsHOT HOT HOT

Pros: Large capacity

Cons: The first one went back for replacement in a month. The replacement runs HOT HOT HOT.....63 degrees Celcius. This thing is not gonna last at that temp. Why didn't Seagate put some vent holes in the case? I use to buy NOTHING but Seagate drives and now they are just not that good anymore. I've had better luck with Western Digital.

Other Thoughts: Maybe if the thing makes it thru warrantee, I will open the case and drill my own vent holes or put it in a 3rd party case.

5 out of 5 eggsCable is NOT proprietary

Pros: I purchased this drive from a local retailer about a year ago. Small size, great throughput of about ~90MB/s sustained write compared to ~20MB/s sustained write when plugged into a 2.0 port.

Cons: The "GoFlex" sata/usb adapter module does fit a little loose and seems like it would be the first point of failure for this unit, but it hasn't broken on me yet.

Other Thoughts: The cable is NOT proprietary, despite what the reviewer below me claims. A simple online search for "USB 3.0 cable" would give you the answer very quickly, so you may want to try that before writing FALSE and INACCURATE reviews about products you don't actually understand.

The cable is INDUSTRY STANDARD USB 3.0 Micro-B connector. This is the standard USB 3.0 cable for ALL portable hard drives, and you can EASILY buy replacements from plenty of places online, including Newegg.

I don't fault anyone for not knowing this, but before you jump online and start writing up a bad review, why not do a simple Google search on the subject? That's a lot easier than calling up Seagate tech support...

To buy a replacement on Newegg, search "USB 3.0 micro b" - I recommend Newegg item# "N82E16812200802".
