1 out of 5 eggsSeagate Crappola

Pros: I'm not understanding Seagate's problem with my using a harddrive any way I see fit. If I want to use a sata to usb adaptor instead of hooking it directly to a motherboard, what should it matter. I've been doing this with harddrives for years.
So, I had backed up about 7000 movies on this drive about 40gb at a time. strictly used for backup, not used but once every 2-3 weeks for storage. Well, one day i lost power to the drive when it was plugged in and that killed it.
It started beeping and never worked after that. so i send it in for replacement and i get it yesterday and as soon as i hook it up today, it starts beeping.
I'm chatting with a seagate rep online today and he says it's only tested to work with a motherboard and all other uses are verboten.
Seagate, i already lost 7000 movies and paid over $11 to ship the first drive back to you only to be told i can't use it.
So Seagate, if it doesn't work, it's not a good deal at any price so I will NEVER buy another Seagate product

Cons: can't count on this drive or this company except under specific conditions.

Other Thoughts: your replacement drive may find it's way to the bottom of the canyon.

1 out of 5 eggsWow - Never Seagate Again!

Pros: Cheap - but conversely, you get what you pay for... One egg was the lowest score I could give... not even worth half an egg.

Cons: Seagate is awful... buy any drive from them at your own risk (and expense). I've had 3 drive failures in the last 4 years, all Seagate. This time I lost my data on this drive, and searching the user forums, I'm not alone - there is a manufacturing defect with these drives that Seagate refuses to admit to. Want your data back? $450 to start... So they build a cheap drive that WILL fail, and then charge you $450 to get your data back and replace it with another junk drive that will fail (separate RMA process for that BTW). Nice little side business. Their motto should be "Seagate - when your data just isn't that important..." I used to be a BIG Seagate fan and huge supporter, but having worked with their customer support on a long series of faulty drives from the manufacturer, I can say that I am now done doing business with Seagate... What an unethical company! Do yourself a favor, if you value your data - don't put it on a Seagate drive even if the drive is free.

Customer Service: Fail
Drive Reliability: Fail
Company Honesty: Fail

Other Thoughts: I hope you read this and save yourself from data loss. Seagate is bottom of the barrel in quality and service.

5 out of 5 eggs2TB Say what??

Pros: This is one SOLID 2 TB drive. I've had it for well over a year now and it's still running strong. Low power draw and high yield my only regret is not getting 2. :(

Cons: Reads and writes everything but it absolutely refuses to read the series of books about vampires and werewolves cleverly named after a time of day similar to dusk.

Other Thoughts: Go back on sale please?

3 out of 5 eggsImpending Failure...

Pros: Holds a lot; pretty good bang for the buck coming out of the price inflation after the earthquakes & flooding in Japan & Thailand in 2011.

Cons: Maybe a month or so ago, one of my 4 drives started making weird grinding noises. Opened up Disk Management, and they were all still there, and all healthy. I'm not entirely positive that's the case. One of them did so again this evening, so I found a freeware program (CrystalDiskInfo) and ran that. According to that program, this drive--far and away the youngest of the four, now only about 9 months old--seems headed for failure sooner rather than later. That's not too encouraging.

Other Thoughts: In my old Dell desktop, purchased ca. 2003, I used a total of 3 IDE drives in it over its useful lifespan. At last check. All 3 still work. Four drives in my current build, and the first 3 are still chugging along (the oldest is about 4 years old now); pretty disappointed that I'm probably going to be able to say I had a hard drive fail on me. Too bad Seagate can't hook me up with a replacement before it expires so I can just easily cut and paste everything from this drive to the new one without having to go through the arduous task of backing everything up. Guess I better gather up all my flash and optical media.

5 out of 5 eggsa reliable hard drive

Pros: Very reliable hard drive, no problems so far (just over 1 year).

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Running as the storage drive on a file/music server, so I can't really comment on its speed. I was a bit apprehensive about the reliability of a large capacity hard drive at first, but I'm feeling pretty confident now.

2 out of 5 eggsFailed after just over a year.

Pros: This drive has been serving me well for just over a year.. until last night.
The drive is quiet and performance has been adequate for the price.

Cons: It suddenly died on me after 16 months of use and now BIOS can't recognize it anymore.

Other Thoughts: The drive just died on me while I was watching a movie stored on it last night. Hopefully Seagate will honor their warranty.
