5 out of 5 eggsFast transfer speeds for the first 250GB

Pros: I bought this because of the reviews acclaim of the 5900rpm's low temps towards lifespan and compensated speeds using the 32MB cache, which works like a mini-hybrid SSD for 80% of the system files used on a daily basis under that size. I transferred a large single file over 250GB (a movie file) from a SATA 6gbs harddrive, also a Seagate 5900 Barracuda and it worked very well, with transfer speeds beginning at 92MB, peaking at 95MB/s, and sustaining 80-90MB/S for the first 15minutes. The file took 56 minutes to transfer, however. More on that in the cons.

Cons: After about 20 minutes, the transfer speeds continued to decrease from 80 to 70, and then finally to 60MB/s. It actually dipped just below 60MB to 59.8/MB/s in the last minute of transferring a 264GB file. It's acceptable for me because I don't do transfers very often, but for the price and size of this harddrive, I wasn't expecting a faster speed for that long, so it's not much of a con because it transferred a quarter of a terabyte in less than an hour.

Other Thoughts: I was quite happy with the performance of my 2TB harddrive that I bought this one, and most recently a 4TB Seagate with the same speeds. The 5900 design was initially cancelled, but it was re-used for the 4TB model, and I'm not sure if newer generations will use a different speed/design, but if the quality of these are any indicator, I would happily pick this one over the 7200rpm as speed isn't a priority over reliability if I have those 2 choices for a budget drive.

2 out of 5 eggsPretty Bad

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: Cheap. You get what you pay for. Died in 14 days

Other Thoughts: I had this hard drive for 14 days. After that it went to pieces. Windows gave me an error that the hard drive was going to die very soon and I had just installed this on a new computer with brand new everything. It was going to be a data drive for my Computer while the SSD booted windows. Anyway I had to back up everything and send it to Seagate. New one *refurbished - since you don't actually get new drives when you send yours back* has worked so far but I don't think I'll ever buy a barracuda green again. Hard Drives that die in two weeks don't make me a happy person.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: No issues so far, using the drive as a replacement for a failed drive in my IOmega home NAS

Cons: none, I just wonder if I could have used a faster drive in my NAS

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate 1-25-2013

Pros: I think I only rated this 3 the first time. Raising that to 5. I'm using this for storage, it's seen a LOT of use in the months I've had it. No problems whatsoever. I see that either NewEgg has stopped carrrying this drive or it is not being made any longer.

This is a good drive, I think that it is either good, you get it and it works, hence the 5 star reviews, or, you get it and it's a DOA drive, ergo the 1 stars. In my case it was good, it worked and is still working. It does not get as hot as my WD drives and it makes no noise at all. So mostly my rating is based on the price and the speed of delivery, and it's status of the last four months.

Cons: It works so I got NO cons. Actually, that this drive is no longer being stocked, is a big one. I think this drive got a bad rap, sometimes a batch of drives can be bad - Like the early 2000's slim Maxtor hard drives - They were design-wise great drives, but 4 in 5 drives failed within one week. But one in five, still work in 2013 as well as they did in 2001. These Seagates are in no wise as bad as those Maxtors, but I think that there was a batch of drives that were just bad to start with, and you were lucky to get a good one.

Other Thoughts: If I canafind more of these I'll certainly get them. 1 TB hard drives used to be about 60 bucks, back in 2010 "defore the deluge" - Now they are rediculous. I have found a local store that carries 1 TB 7200 rpm Barricudas for this same price, that would be sans shipping costs. But I actually prefer buying from NewEgg, so I hope soon they have a deal as good as this was soon, as I need more high-volume hard drives.

1 out of 5 eggsBAD DRIVE!

Pros: It powers up.... but that is it

Cons: Out of thousands of hard drives that I have worked with as a PC Tech since 1993.... I have never seen a drive that is so sow in my life. To transfer 426GB of data onto it, it will take more than 2 DAYS!!! This is Seagate's worst drive and the SLOWEST I have ever encountered!

Other Thoughts: Save your money.... this drive being called a "GREEN" drive means nothing other than spending more "GREEN" to get another drive! This was part of a bundle deal. Seagate has stunk since the 7200.10.

Newegg.... do your customers a service and drop this pieve of *rap.

5 out of 5 eggsNot bad

Pros: It's faster than my old 7200rpm HDD. Read/writes 100mb/s. Plenty of room for games and other programs the SSD doesn't need.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I kind of want to buy a 7200rpm 6gb/s just to see if it's that much faster.
