2 out of 5 eggsRoll the Dice if you feel lucky.

Pros: Lasted almost one year to the day..... I usually have great luck with Seagate, but this Refurbished one was obviously a 320 GB that had been ground down to a 160 GB. Maybe If I'd have spent more $$ I would've got a better one that lasted longer?? Now my Win 7 with free Win 10 upgrade is Toast, not even good for a paperweight!

Cons: It's a less than 50/50 you'll get a good one, but if you feel lucky buy it. IDE HDs are getting scarce. The new ones are getting more and more expensive too. That is if they are really new??

Other Thoughts: I thought Newegg would've had better quality Refurbished Hard Drives, guess you can't win them all.

4 out of 5 eggsPerfect for my SA 8300HD PVR

Pros: - Decent price for an old school 2007 Seagate hard drive.
- Worked perfectly in an old IDE -> USB 2 enclosure with my Mac (Yosemite) and PC (Windows 7).
- Works great in my Scientific Atlanta 8300HD PVR. In fact, this drive shipped as the OEM drive with this model, so it's the perfect replacement if your existing drive is dying. Specifically, it doesn't have the power savings settings that newer IDE drives have, that can cause problems with older PVRs.
- Extremely quiet.

Cons: Mine was clean, but had some significant scratches in several spots, suggesting it was well used, despite performing fine.

Other Thoughts: If you have a Rogers or Videotron cable TV 8300HD PVR, this is the drive for you. 160 GB is a decent size, and the Seagate ST3160215ACE model is the exact one that shipped with many of them, so it will work. You just have to know the DVR commands for correct formatting of the drive to make it work properly, but those are simple and are outlined on various websites. All you need is the remote control for the DVR, a phillips screwdriver, and a torx screwdriver.

I was not able to determine how used my drive was though, since I didn't have a PC in which I could install it to pull off all the SMART data. I just used a USB enclosure, but the disk analysis software I used could not see all the SMART data through the enclosure. No matter though since it works fine as intended, in my 8300HD PVR.

3 out of 5 eggsused plenty

Pros: Functional
Quiet enough
19mm height

Cons: Smart reported power on hours:

serial 5RX5KZ77 mfg 2008-05-02 : 3351 (0.38 years)
serial 5RX7Z47X mfg 2008-11-14: 26880 (3.07 years)
serial 5RX82E16 mfg 2008-11-16: 34572 (3.95 years)

average power up time: 2.47 years

Other Thoughts: I bought 3 "refurbished" from Newegg for $0.085/GB each 1 week before Thanksgiving. That's a hard to beat price for keeping an old machine from running out of space or succumbing to excessive bad sector disease.

Evidence suggests the refurbishing was limited to (possibly) replacing their labels, and putting them into new hermetically sealed bags. Reading them at sector level indicates they had been initialized and/or wiped in some sort of RAID device.

I replaced smaller HDs with these in 2 machines so far, total uptime each at least 6 hours, without observing or hearing anything to indicate any trouble should be expected. The other I only used long enough to check it with Smart.

3 out of 5 eggsReconditioned Hard Drive

Pros: Price, even though the cost was raised by $5.00 just recently.

Cons: You get what you pay for. It could last forever, in which case the cost is unbelievably cheap, or it could lights out the day you receive it. But anything mechanical can do that, new and/or old, so this is sort of a moot point. Just making its presence known is all.

Other Thoughts: IDE is virtually dead, but if you need and/or want IDE drives for whatever your reasons, now is the time to get them, although the buy was so much better at $20 than its currently raised price of $25.

3 out of 5 eggsUse with caution

Pros: Low price for a legacy drive.

Cons: Hit or miss reliability.

Other Thoughts: I purchased a number of these to deploy upgrades from XP to Win7 on some point of sales machines. They work great when they work, but some just don't. Do a full format on these as soon as you get them while you still have the option to replace a bad one.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks OK

Pros: Works OK.

Quieter than expected.

Cons: none at the price.

Other Thoughts: Bought this to help refurbish an older computer that lacks any SATA hard drive ports.

The fact that the drive is IDE and only 160GB suggests that it's fairly old. However, it works just fine and has no bad sectors. One might also expect an older refurbished drive to be kind of noisy but that is not the case here.

5 out of 5 eggsUsing as a big flash drive

Pros: Ran HD Sentinel on it. Perfecct status, estimated that more than 800 days left of its life and was used for 1,028 days prior to re selling it to me. Another refurb. Seagate PATA HDD (400 GB) I bought a week later had a perfect status as well, but was used for over 2,000 days and only had 100 days of life left.

I am using it to store documents and programs I download off the net which frees up space on my primary SSD. For $12, it is worth the risk and has almost 10 times the capacity of a 16 GB flash drive which costs around the same ($10-$15).

Cons: Used quite a bit before re-selling... cannot be used as a primary system drive. If you use one of these everyday, it will most likely start giving you problems after a year or less. This drive is perfect for archiving or back up storage only. These are better than optical discs for archiving since they will last much longer.

Other Thoughts: I advise you to run HD Sentinel on any used or refurb. drive you purchase. It will give you a good idea of what to expect in terms of how long it will last and allow you to decide the est way to use it. One of these refurb. drives I am using as a Windows backup disk because it has very little life left and I rarely need to use a backed up image of my drive. I will most likely update it once a month and maybe actually use it to restore my system once a year or every other year. THESE DRIVES SHOULD NOT BE EXPECTED TO BE USED AS A PRIMARY SYSTEM DRIVE OR AN EVERYDAY, ALWAYS ON DRIVE.

5 out of 5 eggsIt Works Good!

Pros: Can't beat this drive for the $ so far..
Installation was fast I was surprised. No formatting, fdisk, etc. Popped Windows 7 disk in and was good to go in near record time on my system.
Ran a full suite of diagnostics, chkdsk, benchmarks, error scans, health (Good) all the way to temperature 31-36c.
All perfect and runs much better and faster than my 10yr old Maxtor..Hee-He.

Cons: Yep, its an old IDE drive and practically pocket change of what I paid 10 years ago for my out of breath 40gig Maxtor.
Now time will tell on how long this one runs?

Other Thoughts: Going to possibly buy & try refurb. SATA's next time for my newer not so extinct yet systems.
