1 out of 5 eggsBe careful -- these drives will fail quickly, with or without use ...

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I usually don't write reviews. Yes, I know English, but I just don't have the time to spend the extra effort to write a review for something without a good reason one way or the other. Very awesome product, then I might write a review. A very poor product or experience then I might also write a review. So, here we go taking my time to WARN OTHERS about this drive.
Or, maybe, my experience with this drive ...

* Good while it lasts
* Unimpressed with length of existence, expected many more months or years

Cons: * NOTICE -- drive has only ONE YEAR WARRANTY ... wonder why you might ask?
* Used one of these drives for short period of time: August 2015 through May 24, 2016 (TODAY)
* So about 5 + 5 = 10 months of infrequent use
* Short life-span
* When it fails, the drive is not seen by BIOS or OS, unlike some other drives that fail slowly.
* FAILS IMMEDIATELY without recourse and without warning.

Other Thoughts: Now, my drive is chirping with a beeping noise every 4 to 5 seconds. And, it is not accessible by Windows.
It is not seen by BIOS. Nothing.

I believe that everything I have on it is lost. And, I take VERY GOOD CARE of my stuff. I really don't
use the drive that much. And, I would write and complain to Seagate, but it is out-of-warranty.
Let me explain that to clarify. I buy a lot of drives and keep them around for backup purposes.
Well, I bought it a few years ago, but I never really gave it that much use. Sits around, ready
for backups, but not used much. So, that is why I believe I cannot get a RMA.

However, BE AWARE. You might want to TAKE HEED and, possibly, look for another drive.
Yet, this could just be my experience, but YouTube videos about many others in this situation
after a short period of time with the drive, leads me to believe that it is something more
happening.

3 out of 5 eggsGood while they last.

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Good performance for the price.

Cons: They seem to fail right around the 2.5 year mark.

Other Thoughts: I purchased 2 of the 2TB drives and 1 3TB drive. All failed right around 2.5 years. I guess Seagate has it figured out since their warranty is 2 years. I realize that hard drives fail, but these are failing too soon for me. I've replaced the failed drives with WD Red drives. We'll see how those fare.

3 out of 5 eggsPay Attention to the Failed Lifespan in Reviews

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It worked, as a hard drive should.

Cons: It worked, as a hard drive should - for 2 1/2 years.

Other Thoughts: Failed after exactly 2 1/2 years of use (this seems to be the same time frame for the majority). Fortunately for me, it began making an odd noise. I use the word "fortunately" because it gave me the opportunity to sprint to my external drive and do a current backup. I normally back up my hard drive on a weekly basis, but had been busy and found that 2 months had passed since my latest one. I ran SeaTools for Windows and it passed, continuously, yet the sound remained. Not willing to take any chances, I immediately ordered a new drive (different brand), but kept it sealed so that I could return it in the instance the Seagate was fine - it was not. Exactly 7 days later, I went to power on my computer and it would no longer boot. After a few hours, I finally got it to load the OS. I ran SeaTools again, and it failed the test. My advice is to always do regular backups to more than one drive and never rely on SeaTools. I was running the program on a daily basis and it never even found a single bad sector prior to showing the complete failure. This was the first hard drive I ever had fail in 21 years. I seriously have hard drives that still work from 15 years ago (current use). I have two others that are still working at 14 years and 9 years, respectively (again, current use). This 2TB was the first Seagate drive that I ever purchased; it will also definitely be the last. Unfortunately, I have another 1TB that came preinstalled in my other desktop (purchased 7 months after this one), and another that also came preinstalled in my laptop (purchased 6 months ago). It is inconvenient (and costly) to have backups for your backups (I have four beyond my internal drive), but it is better than losing important data in a world that depends on so much of it. Warranties on hard drives are getting shorter when it comes to all manufacturers, so I do not know if any drive will realistically last beyond 5 years as a majority these days (they may be shortening the lifespan in order to increase sales). But one thing is for certain, until Seagate becomes more reliable for a very long stretch, I will not throw my money away on the brand. Even if I get 2 1/2 years out of it at the current price, it is not worth it - especially when my experience with other brands has been far better in terms of reliability. For those who have passed the 2 1/2 year mark without issue, I am genuinely happy for you. You either got lucky, or your hard drive will too, fail soon.

3 out of 5 eggsJust okay, not fantastic

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It's an affordable choice, I bought it on my first computer build.

Cons: After about 18 months of us, it's started making strange noises. I've been backing it up regularly and shopping for a replacement just in case it fails.

Other Thoughts: I probably won't be shopping for Seagate drives anymore, unless I'm on a budget.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Wesley,

Please try running our SeaTools diagnostics to determine the overall drive health:

4 out of 5 eggscheap, has been working fine for 5+years

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: read title.

Cons: -Prone to issues when overclocking, older power supplies with irregular voltage patterns, most likely static.

Other Thoughts: -On an older build I would constantly find myself in Computer Management to remap the drive. Sometimes I'd have to either restart or even replug to get the drive mapped again.
-If I wasn't such a stickler for static prevention, I'd probably have lost my data like the rest of these sock-wearing, carpet-rubbers. None of the components purchased around the same time had suffered similar problems. I'm guessing it prone to power sensitivity issues..

1 out of 5 eggsSeems to be DOA

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: none so far

Cons: Unfortunately this product didn't work at all. I tried switching the cables out, different sata ports on my MOBO - nothing worked. I'll have to RMA it... will update after that process is complete.

Other Thoughts: Everything else I've ordered from Newegg has been excellent. Possibly i'm just unlucky.

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

3 out of 5 eggsFailed just after the warranty ran out

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Great price

Cons: Failed after 2.5 years - warranty is for 2 years.

Other Thoughts: This was one of two drives in a small NAS box with RAID 1 config. I'm not sure what the MTF is with these, but am disappointed.
