1 out of 5 eggsNot dependable

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Lots of storage for the price. Decent speed.

Cons: I bought two of these drives, and after four months, both drives have had problems with disappearing from Windows, followed by failure to start with the system. One of the drives I had to reconnect hot just to get it to pop back on!

Other Thoughts: Would have lost a lot of important data if not for backups! Will never opt for a cheap drive again.

4 out of 5 eggsHead parking click sound

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Inexpensive, performs at advertised speeds. Still working well after 6 months.

Cons: Head parking makes an audible click sound that is annoying to me. Firmware update did not fix the head clicking.

Other Thoughts: I thought that I would have to return this drive simply because of the annoying head parking click every 20 seconds, but I found out that I could adjust the APM (Advanced Power Management) settings with programs like "Hard Disk Sentinel" and "hdparm." The drive comes shipped with a default APM setting of 128. I found that an APM setting of 199 (190 does not work. I haven't as yet tried other setting between 190 and 199) stops the load/unload cycles that cause the head to park about every 20 seconds.

Unfortunately, the APM resets to default every time you reboot from a power-off state. The paid version of Hard Disk Sentinel has a setting in which it reloads your preferred APM setting on every boot-up. Alternatively, some have been running scripts to write to the drive every 8 seconds or so to stop the head from parking. That is a bit beyond my capability at the moment, so I haven't tried that. I tend to leave my system running 24/7, so manually adjusting my APM settings from every powered-off boot isn't so much of a hassle for me to start looking for alternatives just yet.

A number of reviewers have reported that their drives have failed within a year. I couldn't find the stats on this drive for the number of load/unload cycles it is designed for, but I found some general information that various drives are rated from as high as 600k to as low as 50k load/unload cycles. As a reference example, a load/unload cycle count of 788.4k would be reached if a system was left on 24/7 for a year, with a load/unload cycle every 20 seconds. So, maybe the both audible (sound is energy) and numerous head parking of the load/unload cycle is the culprit for the early-failing drives.

4 out of 5 eggsRoomy but a little laggy

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Bought for my DVR and increased storage capacity dramatically. Easily added an additional 2 weeks storage time to my 8-cam DVR @ 240 fps 24/7.

Cons: Random access of video streams can be somewhat laggy, and skipping through the archive (example 10 minute jumps) can have 3-5 second lag times

Other Thoughts: Knocked one egg due to lag time but really this is a good drive, I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 eggsQuiet & Fast!

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Speedy and quiet operation

Cons: None yet!

Other Thoughts: I was debating a long time between WD or Seagate to add to my new system. After reading the reviews the Seagate sold me with the price over the WD black.

3 out of 5 eggsNot sure if warranty is correct.

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Performs well enough for what it is.
Cheap
2/3 of this model are still in good shape.

Cons: Not hybrid SSD
The warranty may be incorrect!

Other Thoughts: You may want to double check the warranty information on this. The site shows 2yr, but my box showed one year.

I have 3 of these in a Synology NAS and one drive has failed. Went to Seagate's site and it only shows my drive had a 1yr warranty not the 2yr advertised in the description. (Found the original box, and it also states 1yr warranty)

Granted, I bought this drive near the end of 2012 so the warranty info may have changed.

Other than this failure the other two drives haven't given me any problems. Normally I've been a die hard Seagate guy, but I've had a couple fail in the last few years. Might be time to look around again.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes what you would expect

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I was able to plug it in, boot it and enable partitions of storage with ease. Price for space wasn't bad, and I'm pleased.

Cons: None so far

1 out of 5 eggsJust awful

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Well, the pro is that it's plenty of space for anyone's needs.

Cons: While the drive works, it's incredibly slow. I replaced a 1tb Seagate with this one (same series even, just smaller) and it's horribly slow compared to the old drive. Everything is up to date and I installed a clean Windows 8.1 to no avail. This drive is the Achilles' heel of my system. I'm counting the days until I replace it.

Other Thoughts: I used to love Seagate drives, but those days are long gone for me. I'll be going to a Samsung SSD for my primary drive and a WD Black for storage.

1 out of 5 eggsNot made to last

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Excellent read/write speeds

Cons: This was my second ST2000DM001 that failed in just over a year - the second time round it happened to be in my iOmega cloud drive, so I was unaware that it was another Seagate. In the first instance the drive physically seized & it was impossible to recover the data, in the second instance the heads crashed & it cost over $800 to get the data recovered.

Other Thoughts: Would never purchase a Seagate drive again.
