1One gigabyte, or GB, equals one billion bytes and one terabyte, or TB, equals one trillion bytes when referring to hard drive capacity. 2Seagate ships this drive in both 4K- and 512-byte sectors. SmartAlign technology is included on 4K sector drives. Both drives are functionally and physically equivalent.

  • newegg Reliable Performance Seagate Barracuda delivers every capacity point from 250GB to 3TB on full 7200-RPM, SATA 6Gb/s platform and includes a host of refined technologies to further boost performance. Seagate OptiCache technology further exploits big 64MB cache sizes and improved microprocessor capabilities, helping boost overall performance by as much as 45% over previous generation.
  • newegg Maximizes hard drive storage densities Barracuda 1TB-per-disk technology incorporates 340,000 unique tracks in the width of a single inch. This incredible storage density drives new capacity possibilities and lowers your total storage costs. Seagate AcuTrac technology enables new storage densities with accurate reading and writing to nano-sized tracks that are only 75 nanometers wide! That’s about 500 times smaller than the period at the end of this sentence. (3 Disks for 2TB model)
  • newegg Green where it counts Barracuda desktop drives are produced using the most sophisticated manufacturing process in the industry, with a focus on environmental stewardship. Compliant with the RoHS and using less power, these hard drives not only save the world but also save your cost–without sacrificing performance.
  • newegg No-hassle transition to 4K sectors Are you worried about moving to Advanced Format 4K sector technology? You don’t have to be with Barracuda drives. Seagate SmartAlign technology makes this transition a snap: no utilities to run, and no extra integration steps to take up your time.

3 out of 5 eggsLosing Sectors

Pros: Great Price for capacity and specs.

Cons: I have owned this drive for 9 Months and have began to lose sectors. SMART test fails.

Other Thoughts: This drive was originally purchased with 2 year warranty as stated by description. Seagate states these drives only come with a 1 Year Warranty. Both Newegg and others show 2 years. Something smells well a little fishy. Lucky or maybe unlucky mine failed just under 1 year. I own three of these drives. I am giving three eggs because Tech support was very helpful.

5 out of 5 eggsSeagate is my personnal best

Pros: This one I've owned only a couple of weeks... but I also own three 1TB units (524AS, DM001 x 2), installed dozens in customers rigs, and also refreshed 4-5 units at work that had 30 000 hours + in very poor conditions (but not much job, files are on the server, and the stations are restarted only once a week). Only one which stats indicated it was in early decline - still running Win 7 after six months though, without a single fail.

I sent back one unit in my entire life... it was deemed under warranty even though it was a couple of months off period as to the production date. Had no proof of purchase whatsoever. Process may seem systematic and cold (of course) and will leave you doubting, but in the end they replaced the unit with a refurb (524AS), I paid shipping one way, and that became my sole HDD in my PC along two SSDs, its primary purpose is "Downloads" and "Movies", though it held the OS in the beginning. Running a year and a half now... Other ones I own are in the HTPC.

The branded "DM" series are dirt cheap... they're worth every dollar and beyond.

In my experience they're faster than their "Caviar Black" counterpart, which are supposed to be higher end. The Blacks will reach higher read/writes peaks, but will also go down way under Barracudas, and the average is usually a couple of mbs in favor of Seagate, which have more of a straight line regarding reads/writes.

Cons: If I ever find one...

Other Thoughts: Usually, when I refresh an old rig for a customer, Seagate Barracuda drives are reusable... I couldn't say as much about that other renowned brand I've discussed, I've had to ditch many of their units...

3 out of 5 eggs50% Success Rate

Pros: When they work the work, but when they don't...
NewEgg RAM process works very well. Thanks Newegg!

Cons: Bought two of these drives at the same time. One seems to be working very well. The other was DOA. As soon as I plugged it in it sounded like a dump truck and it was not recognized by the computer.

Other Thoughts: I don't get who does the quality control on these drives. How in the world can they leave the factory broken ?!?!?

5 out of 5 eggsSeagate appears to be reasonably consistent...

Pros: First and foremost, huge kudos for newegg's exceptionally speedy and safely packaged delivery service. Seagate's stability has been a treasure. Since 1995, it has been Seagate that has given me numerous reasonably stress free experiences. Though I did have to install Seagate's DiskWizard for reasons that are outside of my understanding, once Seagate's DiskWizard recognized the drive, I utilized the Disk Management of Windows 7 to do a full format. This drive had zero issues and is being used for back up. Currently it's on an eSata external connection and it is purring.

Cons: No cons. I am not at all a wishful thinker..So if this drive or any of my drives die, I will be forever grateful for taking the time to make back ups. Costly as backing up data is, it is worth it.

Other Thoughts: Having recently experienced the exceptional speed of a 120GB SSD by Kingston, how quickly it is that I forgot how long it takes for a traditional drive to undergo a full and thorough format. Sheesh!

5 out of 5 eggsAMAZING Drives

Pros: I own 4 of these, no raid or anything special but they are definitely running fine without any issues. I use one as my Program Files folder paired with an SSD for the OS, i dont even notice the difference in performance since they have the load taken off of them with the SSD. I use the others as libraries for my regular folders as well. Would recommend these to anybody over bare drive WDs.

Cons: they should be on sale again!

Other Thoughts: I went with Seagate mainly because the drives i was using for the past 8 years were all seagate and STILL WORKING. Seagate 250GB hard drives from at least 2005!

Would recommend these to anybody over bare drive WDs. I bought a few green bare drive WDs before i decided to go with seagate and they all arrived DOA or like what happened to my brother, they die after a period of time.
