1 out of 5 eggsRoll the dice

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It was cheap.

Cons: I bought this drive in June of 2013 and put it right into service as a backup disk in my server. It failed last week, late January 2016. 2 years and 7 months. Now I know why iit was priced so cheaply. I had only backed up to it a handful of times.

5 out of 5 eggsI don't know why I don't buy these in bulk

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Stupid cheap.
Yes, I know, gone are the days of paying over $1/GB. Now it literally isn't worth the money to buy anything with less than 1TB of storage space. These drives hit the sweet spot when it comes to price/GB. They are JUST cheap enough to justify the impulse buy, and the extra storage won't make you regret it later on. I bought 2 of these...just because. I could buy another 2 but at this point adding any more weight to my case might cause my vertebrea to shoot out like a frisby.

I've never had any issues with Seagate in my entire life. Hopefully that remains to be true in the coming years.
Other than the price, there isn't much else to say. They are good drives from a reliable brand, and if you happen to live a few miles from a Newegg warehouse like I do then every shipping option is literally next day shipping...but that has nothing to do with the drives...*cough*

Cons: I didn't buy more of them
They aren't lighter.

2 out of 5 eggsWish Seagate would improve the reliability

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: - Worked great when new
- Fast
- Quiet

Cons: - Only last 2.5 years (2 reliably).
- Started becoming unreliable after 2 years, but SeaTools said the drive was fine, so I assumed the problem lay elsewhere. However, today the computer abruptly froze up. I have an SSD boot drive and this 2TB HDD for data. Windows would boot, but any attempt at opening File Explorer would hang the system. I tried disconnecting the hard drive, and the problem was gone. The SSD utility showed everything fine there. I reconnected the drive and ran SeaTools, but it can't even find the drive. I moved the drive to another computer and SeaTools can't find it there either. Oddly the BIOS does see it, but that doesn't help me get my data off.

Other Thoughts: Seagate touted their 1 TB per platter technology as being a great boon for reliability, so why is the reliability so bad? None of the hard drive manufacturers are making reliable drives. Would it help to get rid of power saving mode on desktops since it spins them down and back up more frequently?

1 out of 5 eggsDead after 2.5 years. Data loss suffered.

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Fast when it worked.

Cons: Crashed hard without warning. Purchased as a backup for my 5+ year old backup drive. Started skipping my 5 year old backup drive and using this directly (stupid I know). Data loss suffered.

Other Thoughts: Died after 2.5 years of regular use. It was a backup drive.
Crashed hard without warning. Windows reported I/O errors then failed to power on. Seatools for DOS could not find the drive. None of the tools on UBCD could see the drive. Not recognized in BIOS. Finally powered on and was able to perform a full sector scan, tons of bad sectors. Tried to salvage the data and it powered off again. Seagate warranty is 2 years. Western Digital warranty is 5 years. I've had dozens of WD hard drives last 10+ years. This was my first and LAST Seagate drive. DO NOT BUY.

3 out of 5 eggsDead after 3+ years

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Worked fine for several years.

Cons: Bought in fall 2012 died jan 2016. A little over 3 years of life. I have many drives who lived much longer lives. Not run 24/7 just 3 or 4 hrs a day. This drive was a hot backup to the OS drive.

Other Thoughts: Developed "hard to read sectors". Seatools for DOS "fixed" it but I use it as a place to put backups so can't have a flaky backup drive can we.

1 out of 5 eggsDied just short of warranty!

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: 2TB. That's about all I can say.

Cons: Use as a backup drive. Only accessed or utilized twice a day during scheduled backups. Here's what happened: Hard drive stopped responding. Unplugging it and then plugging it back in, I was able to run chkdsk /R. It found bad sectors and recorded them. Two days later, the drive was unresponsive once again. Again, had to disconnect and reconnect to run chkdsk /R. More problems. This drive is just short of being two years old.

Other Thoughts: I would avoid Seagate after this experience. I'm heading over to WD or Hitachi.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Paul,

We apologize for the problems experienced with your 2TB Desktop HDD.

Please try running our SeaTools diagnostics to determine the overall drive health (this has the ability to fix some sector errors):

1 out of 5 eggsWhy is this drive so slow?

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Price, size

Cons: I've now had this drive for nine months. All this time I've been trying to find out why it's so slow. It passes tests using seatools but there is something wrong with it. I had it in an older machine (XP SP3) and thought maybe some how that caused the slowness. Now I've built a new Windows 10 I7 machine. It's still just as slow. When copying files to it it seems to just pause like it's doing a lot of retries but it always seems to get the copy done. I haven't detected any errors in any files. Both machines also contain three 500 gb Seagate drives that all run at full speed. Only this drive is slow. I've tried different cables and swapping the connectors used on the mother board. Even my usb drives are way faster. I'm about to trash it.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Great for the money. Still running strong after 3 years. It is a lot better than i was expecting

Cons: So far none, hasn't broke on me yet

Other Thoughts: Affordable option if you're looking to add some more storage space for your rig.
