5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive, great price

Pros: Great little drive, reduced my Windows 7 boot time to ~20s down from 1min.

Plenty of space at a good rice (compared to a SSD)

Cons: Runs hot, use it in a laptop and can feel the drive run hot through the plastic case, cooling fan recommended if used in a laptop.

Unrelated to the actual drive but I bough t 1 month before they dropped the price by $20 :( bad timing on my part.

Other Thoughts: Aside from running hot temp wise, it's a great little drive for a laptop for those who cannot afford a SSD (equivalent size SSD runs over $500)
Definitely get this, it's a huge improvement over a traditional drive.

5 out of 5 eggsPS3 HDD Upgrade

Pros: Placed in PS3 a year ago, the 7200 speed does not produce any more noticeable heat than the 5400 stock drive even in a fat model. Boot up and games load in a few seconds.

Cons: None

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: None.

Cons: Worked for 1 month then crashed. Also, seemed slow. Getting a new one shipped to me under warranty. Will see how that goes.

4 out of 5 eggsIncredibly nice drive

Pros: Incredibly fast. Easy to switch to once you know exactly what to do.

Cons: First drive was DOA, and Newegg as a terrible return policy.

It's tricky to upgrade from a larger, slower drive. Cloning software won't work. I had to mess around with partitions (including OEM hidden partitions and win 7 ultimate hidden partitions) Ultimately I had to shrink my original main drive, leaving the extra space in an unassigned, unused partition, and then do a windows system image, and restore it to the new drive. Worked like a charm and now I know.

Other Thoughts: Took off 1 egg due to newegg's poor return policy when the first drive was DOA. I had to pay more for the RMA than I did for my original shipping, and then it took them several days after receiving it and me contacting their live chat for them to actually open the box.

5 out of 5 eggsFaster than light.

Pros: Wonderful speed.
Small price.
Decent space.
Boot time BEFORE my drive was installed in my Acer Aspire 5745g was about 4 minutes 30 seconds! I can cook dinner faster than that granted I have a lot of server/localhost applications that boot up too and I was running of a stock 5400rpm Hitachi drive. Furthermore I upgraded to 8GB of RAM from the stock 4GB so that can affect things too, but that part should help.

After the drive was installed and and my previous drive cloned my boot time was 30 seconds to the login screen and 1 minute to web browsing. I have a BIOS password and a really long and complicated windows password that slows that time down and I dual boot my system with Linux so I have to select my OS too. If it weren't for the passwords and OS selection I could probably be on the web in about 40 seconds.

After installing the drive you will have to restart the computer a few times so that it can 'learn' the boot process.

These drives from Seagate seem to learn what you use or do the most and then adapt to bring the best performance to that activity or process. After 3-4 reboots it figured out how to boot windows very quickly and it was a wonderful improvement.

Most of the bad reviews have to be related to people not knowing how to install drives. If you know how to install a drive and clone hard drives this will be a fantastic upgrade for any system.

Cons: I haven't found any yet. I have only had the drive in for about a month now, but I have only noticed distinct improvements to my laptop. I haven't noticed a single bad thing yet.

I was worried about how it might affect my battery life switching from a 5400 rpm drive to this drive, but I think my battery life has been improved. It doesn't need to rely on the drive spinning up as often because of the SSD component and the SSD portion seems to use minimal power.

Other Thoughts: If you have a sluggish laptop and are looking for a good way to speed things up, this is it. This has been the single greatest modification I have made to my laptop. It has more than doubled performance and it helps prevent me from wanting to buy a $2000 laptop to solve my concerns with speed.

It is not a full SSD of course so if you went with one of those you could have even better performance, but if you are on a budget and looking for a fast drive then this is it. It is probably 70% as effective as the average SSD and yet you still get to have 750GB of space without paying $100s for it. I highly recommend this drive.

3 out of 5 eggsGood drive, bad clone software

Pros: Fast, inexpensive

Cons: The Seagate disk clone software, and most other clone software from what I can see, will break your Windows 7 update and genuine license certification. Something about the difference in sector size between smaller drives and larger drives screws up Windows Update, Crypto and indexing. Who would have known? I have not found a way around the breakage other than a full re-install from a DVD.

Other Thoughts: Selling a disk without a warning that cloning onto it will break your copy of Windows is just wrong. I learned the hard way, but there are many Google posts about the issue. Seagate pumps up the ability to easily clone your old system without mentioning that you won't be able to get updates and it will constantly nag you about not having a genuine valid license.

1 out of 5 eggsDead on Arrival

Pros: Shipped quickly

Cons: Dead on arrival, the drive won't spin up, it just sits and gets really hot. Now I have to pay for the RMA to send it back and get it replaced.

Other Thoughts: I was really looking forward to getting this drive. Now who knows when I'll get my replacement?

5 out of 5 eggsWorks pretty well

Pros: I have one of these that came OEM in a notebook computer. Took it out before booting the first time and replaced it with an M4, so it never saw service in a portable environment. Anyway, it now lives in a small HTPC where it works just great. The caching in the drive produces excellent Win 7 boot times -- 14 seconds from button push to desktop. That's faster than some other, similar, systems I have that have SSDs in them. I wish there was some reliable way to measure the read speed for cached data, but all I can say is that it's FAST based on this system's behavior. For cached data, it's as fast as the best of SSDs.

Otherwise, it seems to be behaving well. There's only minimal bearing noise. No vibration. No actuator/head noise. Very little apparent power draw, judging by the temperature rise in the case, which is only a few degrees C.

Given the downgrade in platter speed (7200 to 5400 which will visibly affect write speed) and the cache type (SLC to MLC, which, all things equal, will result in shorter cache hardware lifetime) in the newer drives, I'd still recommend this one, even at its lower capacity and higher price.

Cons: None that I've encountered.

Other Thoughts: You might wonder why use a mechanical drive in a HTPC instead of a garden-variety SSD. Because of streaming Flash content. Under some conditions, and I'm not sure what they are exactly, Flash insists on writing a temporary buffer file during streaming which can easily amount to 5GB written to the ~250MB file in a four hour period. This is not the best thing to do to an SSD. But it's perfect for a hybrid drive where the writes don't matter and the entire temp file is cached. Works great. And the 8GB cache is still large enough to retain all the files needed for booting and most applications. All in all, it's an excellent choice for this application. I'm very pleased with its performance.

Based on a sample of one, I would not hesitate to buy more where the application suits the use of a mechanical drive.

5 out of 5 eggssweet spot

Pros: best capacity to price ratio if you catch it on sale then it's not much more expansive than the 1TB version.
