1 out of 5 eggsUpdated review after 4 yrs of use

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST1000DM003 1TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Single platter 1TB drive for under $100. Light weight, allows for excellent handling for file compression.

Cons: Update---Drive's I/O interface failed after four years of use. The dirve motor was still running but the I/O would not work. This should not happen after only four years. I have never had a WD drive fail like this before. Some of my WD drives are nine years old and still healthy and going strong. As such, will not buy Seagate again.

Surprisingly difficult to format. Bought two of these for my server (one as a primary and one back up drive). Neither would successfully format on my server (Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition) Had to attachment them to an XP box to get them to complete a good format. Once formatted, my server recognized them and all is good. Found that very strange.

Other Thoughts: First time in a long while I have bought Seagate. I usually buy WDs for their reliability and performace. Bought these as they were nearly $20 cheaper for the same size, cache and performance as the WDs. (HDD prices are too high anyway, they need to come down). Gave it three stars due format problems and that fact I can't comment on reliability yet. Will in about two years. The drives they replaced were 6 years old which were WD Black editions.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat in RAID

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST1000DM003 1TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: great little power-plants. We use solely Seagate at my work because they are easier to get a hold of. I currently have 2 of the 1tb's in a RAID 0 and it pulls about 250 Mb/s read and 240 Mb/s write speeds which is great for when I am recording my gameplay. I also have another 2tb in the same model that is just a basic storage drive and it works well.

2 YEAR UPDATE : I have bought several more of these over the years for a home NAS that I made. I had two old ones from my earlier review and purchased 6 more for an 8 drive ZFS pool. I recently had one fail, manufactured Oct 2014 and failed March 2016. I entered the RMA information and Seagate already sent me the replacement, total took about 5 business days from me dropping mine in the mail to getting their new drive. Great RMA, did it all online and didn't have to call or jump through any hoops. A+ in my book. Also the two drives I bought in 2013 are still kicking just fine, read and writes are great still and I keep them spinning 24/7/365 in my server so they take a good amount of abuse. You cannot go wrong with Seagate of WD in my book, I just prefer these because they are a bit cheaper and when buying 8 of them a little goes a long way.

Cons: none

1 out of 5 eggsSeagate has gone bye bye with quality...

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST1000DM003 1TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: They are on the faster side of mechanical hard drives.

Cons: It is inevitable that these seagate drives will fail. I have worked in the PC field for over 10 years and 80% plus of the dead hard drives i see are seagates.... Most of the time it is not that the drive fails mechanically, but rather the board on it becomes faulty causing the drive to lose its place and scramble it's own brains. Basically it seems as though they are designed to fail.

1 out of 5 eggs2 Failing Drives

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST1000DM003 1TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: When it works, it works well.

Cons: First drive starting failing a few months after I bought it. RMA'd it and 2 days later the second drive is now failing! Seagate is earning its reputation for unreliability.
