3 out of 5 eggsSeagate not what they used to be...

Pros: - Fast
- CAPACITY
- Buffer Size
- Makes big RAID arrays much easier

Cons: - 5 Drives Ordered
- 1 dead within a week
- 1 DOA
- Seagate does not care

Other Thoughts: I'll keep this simple. We needed to build a RAID array with about 8TB of space and room for growth. We got the QNAP-TS870U 8 bay NAS. We bought 4 of these Seagate drives. 12TB, 8TB after RAID5 and room to add 8TB more with 4 more bays open. Great. Within one week, we got a message that one of the drives failed. QNAP device was awesome - no data loss, proactive notification, stands ready to add back in new drive.
At this point I'm ok - anyone can have a drive fail. I RMA the drive (thanks NewEgg for great RMA process) and also decide we should have a spare drive just for these situations. I order ANOTHER of these drives so it will get here faster than the RMA will take. The 5th drive arrives and it is DOA. Will not load in the NAS, will not mount on the desktop, SeaTools nor any other Seagate software will find it.
I online chat with Seagate support. They are nice, but unhelpful. They eventually punt and say I need to contact voice support. Voice support answers quickly, I'll give them that. After that, I might as well have been talking to a wall. They agree the drive needs to be returned. I stress to them that I am in a bad situation because of 2 out of 5 Seagate drives being defective. I ask for advance replacement (send me new drive before they get the return. They agree but tell me it will be 5 days before I get the new drive!
At this point I'm staring at a RAID 5 NAS in a degrade state, totally unprotected. It is due to Seagate drives being bad (2 of 5!). They will not even OFFER me a next day replacement. They offered me a $9.95 option - and I thought ok, THAT will be next day. I was wrong. It was for a pre-paid return box. I can get cheaper shipping, thank you.
I would even PAY for next day delivery. I would not be HAPPY about it, but I would do it. They will not offer it. The "warehouse" controls shipping and no one can talk to the warehouse. Not them, not me - no one.

Seagate - this is no way to treat customers who have put their name behind your product (as I have done with my company) and are being made to look foolish when the best we can do is 5 days to get our RAID array back to a healthy/protected state.

I love these drives IN THEORY. I will not be buying any more. WD here I come...

1 out of 5 eggsBad Streak Contines

Pros: Cheap at the time for it's size.

Cons: Both drives died within a year. The first one died 1 month into use and the second just died. I've never had good experiences with Seagate, their drives always seem to die on me for whatever reason.

1 out of 5 eggsdie in 4th month

Pros: DONT BUY THIS DRIVE
i have this drive form last year dec., since my PSU broken i took out drive left there for 2 days when i get new PSU i put it on, it make beep sound, that is mean this Hard drive die what a shame. only 3 or 4 months not even put a data in there.

Cons: Your Seagate Order shipment has been delayed due to low inventory. One or more of the product replacements on your order may not ship on time.

5 out of 5 eggsNeed space? NO problem.

Pros: 3 Tb (2.7 Tb after formatting in NTFS) is really quite amazing. I dumped tons of stuff I have had for years on it when I suspected I had soon-to-fail drives and it turns out I did. If you need lots of storage space, this drive really delivers serious bang for you buck.

The speed was surprisingly fast! I figured that as a result of being such a spacious drive that I would be sacrificing speed for so much space. Turns out compared to my WD black, it isn't that much slower. I didn't run full benchmarks on it, but when I transfer files from hdd to hdd I saw speeds over 100 mb/ sec through SATA 6gbs/sec connection. I was pretty impressed with the speed as well. I think the 64 mb cache really improves hdd speeds from what I've owned in hard drives.

Cons: As of right now, I can't really name any. I will be sure to come back and adjust this review as my experience with the drive continues. If you buy this drive expecting solid state speed, then obviously that's not going to happen. I am happy I put my Operating System on my SSD and bought this drive for space.

Other Thoughts: I bought this on a newegg shell shock sale... Can't believe I got this drive for the price I did. 3 Tb for just over 100 bucks in unbelievable.

2 out of 5 eggsDEAD DISK

Pros: Price for TB. I already got two disks and they are woring well in my Drobo. Gave two stars for two working disks.

Cons: DOA, what more to say. :(

Other Thoughts: I purchased disk and didn't have a chance to check it out erlier. Installed new sytem today after coming back home from a long trip and realized that my return option is due date. Entering 30th day for return option, done deal... Waste of money. :(

2 out of 5 eggs2 for 4

Pros: Nice price

Cons: Reliability

Other Thoughts: Ordered 4 of these for my 4 bay NAS.

One was DOA which I guess explains why I couldn't get my NAS configured with all 4 plugged in. Reported 3.86GB (On a 3GB drive, NICE!) and I couldn't any tests to even recognize the drive serial number or firmware version. Swapped drive to a different bay, no go.

Running my NAS with the 3 good drives and less than 1 day later I have a drive that is now reporting a 10,832 reallocated sector count. That seems such a HUGE number from one day to the next. My NAS spit out "remapped" notifications for over 3 hours. Maybe it will settle down and not have any more problems but not something I am willing to take a chance on while under warranty.

PS - My other 2 drives report 0 reallocated sector count

3 out of 5 eggsDONT USE AS A BOOT DRIVE!

Pros: Large space, 7200rpm, runs cool.

Cons: Unless you have a high-end motherboard, if you try installing windows on it, it will break the hard drive to only 2.1tbs! You can use seagates software to use the other 700gbs, but it will be on a separate disk!

It also renders 300gbs useless.

Other Thoughts: What I did to fix my problems is buy a SSD, install windows on there, and use the 3tb as a storage device. Since it isnt the boot device it can be fully utilized to have a maximum of 2.70 TB.

2 out of 5 eggsDOA Batch?

Pros: good price to TB ratio (45$/TB at the time), and historically I favor Seagate over others.

Cons: One of the two I ordered was DoA, as was the grade-A (new, not refurb) replacement drive. After this experience I'm going to return the 2nd drive (again) and go with something else. I base my loyalty to Seagate on the stability of the one working drive in the future.

Other Thoughts: I bought two drives for a mirror. While my Nvidia NForce 980 does support 3TB HDDs, the raid controller (MediaSheild) does not and so truncates the mirror to 2TB. I'll use robocopy/rsync to manually mirror (backup) my data as this too has its advantages.

3 out of 5 eggsHopeful, but cautious . . .

Pros: Cheap Price.

Cons: Seagate's infamous history of bad drives.

Other Thoughts: I bought these because I was hoping Seagate was over their notorious period of completely unacceptable drive failure. This, and the fact that Samsung, about the best, was bought out by Seagate, and are no longer available.

So far, they both work, and quietly. But I am still leery, as one should be, with a name brand with Seagate's history.
