4 out of 5 eggsDoes the job - speed varies greatly

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Large storage capacity in small physical footprint - quiet

Cons: Sometimes when copying between devices the speed is 13MB/sec - other times it is instataneous to copy 4GB+ files. Very strange performance in real-world situations.

2 out of 5 eggsfailed today, still under warrenty

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Worked nicely for about 1.5 years then died.

Cons: These drives have about a 9% failure rate per year according to some large data storage sites. Sending back to Seagate under warranty. Unfortunately that means I am going to get a refurbished drive, which new has a 9%/year failure rate. I wonder what their refurbished drive failure rate will be.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat 3TB drive

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Fast! Not a "green" drive
Still quiet after 17 months.
3TB for about $100
stays cool for a 7200 RPM drive

Cons: short warranty

Other Thoughts: I use it as a storage drive in a PC that never moves around. Windows 8 spins down the drive fairly frequently, maybe that lowers the wear and tear a bit. Again, it's a storage drive. But it's really nice to have to the speed for mass file copying and periodic consistency checking.

3 out of 5 eggsHit or miss

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Seagate was very quick with my RMA, took only 3 days from when I filed to get a drive at my door.

Replacement drive works and performs well, consistent ~175MB for both sequential read and write speeds in a 6 years old pc with classic sata ports. No strange noises, ran drive diagnostics and everything looks kosher.

Cons: First drive arrived, plugged it in and it seemed to work fine, but was making noises that I wasn't comfortable with. Over the next week I tried to use it as normal(part of my media server), but didn't put anything on it that wasn't backed up elsewhere. I started noticing that while reading it would randomly hang(I'm sure this happened while writing data as well, but wasn't as noticeable for what I was doing with it. After about a week with the problem seeming to get worse, I started running tests on it, 4GB sequential read benchmarks would consistently fail at about 60%, then abort before the write benchmark could ever start. Tests for 2GB and under it would work, but the speeds were less than 1/2 of what my 2TB green Samsung drives perform at, not acceptable by any means. On to the drive diagnostics, the drive was well beyond the threshold for write failures and had already used up all of its spare sectors trying to remap the bad ones. Using seatools for dos it would immediately fail both the long and short tests and spit out and error code "B2A89E41" with no other explanation aside from "replace your drive".

Other Thoughts: Got the drive on sale for $99, RMA cost me the $10 that I saved on the sale price. Expected a good drive first time around, took a warranty replacement, but it seems that I have a good one now. If I run into issues down the road I'll update here.

1 out of 5 eggsdont buy

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: They worked great for about a year.

Cons: About a month ago they started to die one after another. Started with 8. 4 died in a week. Then I replaced them all. And they were no longer in warranty.

Other Thoughts: Unless you plan on using them on rare occasions don't buy them!

1 out of 5 eggsTwo Dead Drives

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Nice, fast drive. The problem is (for me anyway) is that I bought one 2 years ago and it developed some sort of logic problem that made it extremely flaky. I ordered a replacement from Newegg about 6 months ago and now it is failing SMART. It's still apparently readable so I git everything off of it. So, I'm off to get a WD to replace this one. Two failures in two years, not a good record. Of course, you may NEVER have a problem.

Cons: Poor reliability

1 out of 5 eggsDropping like flies

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: These were wonderfully fast and ran well for approximately 19 months.

Cons: I purchased 16 of these in August 2012. They ran beautifully until February 2014. As of today, in April, I've had 4 of the original 16 day. Complicating matters, Seagate's warranty on the drives did not match what was actually printed on the boxes (either 2 or 5 years, depending on where I bought them). Luckily, they have offered warranty replacement on each failure thus far, but if they continue to die off as I expect, then I'll be replacing drives frequently over the next few months, past the 24 months Seagate has allowed me.

Other Thoughts: I'm running multiple Seagate arrays. My 2TB disks (don't have the model handy), are running wonderfully after three years with only a single drive failure. I'm not sure what's gone wrong with these drives, but I think I'll go WD/Hitachi in the future.
