3 out of 5 eggsDecent drives

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: They're cheap

Cons: They will have problems. Seagate doesn't make the best hard drives and they'll die out on you quick. I ordered 5 seagate drives and as of writing this, 2 of the 5 have already died. Granted, it's been two years since I ordered them but I've never had any WD's die on met yet that are way older.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Its quiet and had no problems with it being a bare drive so far. I do have an open case with only three drive bays. However, I have five HDD's in it. I have it just resting on the bottom of my case and it seems to do everything just fine. The speed test for reading and writing came back to be pretty quick. It's great to have all the extra space for my programs.

Cons: It's really big and would not fit into my drive bays.

Other Thoughts: No problems yet!

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Price. Still running after 1 year.

Cons: I have to manually set the APM value after every reboot. With the default value of 128 I could hear the drive park the read/write heads every few minutes and the load cycle count was increasing rapidly.

Other Thoughts: I use this drive mostly for backup and media storage. It is running 24/7 although actual read/write usage is low. I have a feeling the high failure rates reported for this drive may be related to the excessive head parking. Even when the drive was not mounted I could hear the head parking chirp every so often indicating the drive loads/parks the heads intermittently for reasons other than i/o. Increasing the APM value solved the parking issue, or at least covered it up.

1 out of 5 eggsLast less than 2 years

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Good products while they work, see cons

Cons: Have two of these drive, purchased together. Less than 2 years old. Both have started within the last month with the 'clicking noise of death', the precursor to failure. These were used were for very LIGHT duty, backup drives, using external docks, turned on once a day for daily backups and occasional access. On SMART test, you can see the bad sector and bad bytes indicators slowly creeping up, little by little.

Other Thoughts: I had issues with the 7200.11 product line (BSY error), and not really great experience so far with the 7200.14 line. 7200.12 was okay. I think I will go back to WD Blacks.

5 out of 5 eggsRecommended from data so far

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Does as is advertised, pretty fast, works well with my SATA enclosure, and for the price was a good value.

Cons: So far, not one. Easy install, worked off the bat.

Other Thoughts: There are better ones out there, especially if you are looking for NAS stuff, but this has been quite good for the price and has so far worked flawlessly.

2 out of 5 eggsLast a little under 3 years

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Back in 2012, 3TB def was a lot of space. Was able to get it working fairly easily. Used it as main media/video storage device. Was pretty quick and worked at great speeds.

Cons: Hard drive died two days ago after almost 3 years of use. The final year it was used mostly as a backup device, so was surprised to see it fail. Haven't bought Seagates much lately...this failure from a hard drive that's had light use kinda pushing me further away. But to be fair...it did serve it's main purpose for the most part.

Other Thoughts: Out of warranty, so drive is useless now. Warranties should stick to 3 years. Originally rated it as 3 eggs, but with that thought, it's now a 2.

1 out of 5 eggsFailure - 2 years 3 months

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Drive worked well until it failed.

Cons: Drive failed 3 months out of warranty. For a drive that was only used to store media I expect a longer life span than this.

Other Thoughts: Seatools error code E2669B60, Windows will not boot with drive connected.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: None

Cons: DOA

Other Thoughts: Planned to use this to extend my NAS space, but it was DOA. First hard drive I've ever had fail, and I've bought many. I guess it was bound to happen. I have 3 other Seagate drives in my NAS that have been running for a year straight without issue. Just bad luck I guess.
