1 out of 5 eggsNail on the head

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Large and cheap at the time.

Cons: Failed 2 weeks after warranty ended.

Other Thoughts: Not sure whether I'm happy, sad, or appalled that I'm not the only one with this issue but it had been making strange noises its whole life. No performance issues but I guess I should have RMA'd anyway. I have a WD green that came in a gateway I purchased two years previous to the Seagate and it's still going strong (and w/ much heavier use.) Now I face a dilemma as I also have 2 Seagate externals. Is it only a matter of time?

5 out of 5 eggsGood Cheap Drive

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I have a couple of these, and work with others at work. I gave up a long time ago on "trustworthy" drives. I get two cheap drives and hope to avoid simultaneous failures. These drives are cheap and fast. Buy two from different stores so they are at least a little different in production, and set them up as a mirror array. I own about a dozen of these drives, all in redundant arrays and none has failed *yet*

Cons: The closet I can come to a con is that the 4TB version is slow as heck, so I stick with the 3TB version. This review is for the 3TB, so that really does not apply here.

1 out of 5 eggs2nd hard drive dead in less than 6 months.

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It was nice when it worked. The online customer Returns is straight forward and easy to submit.

Cons: I bought this hard drive to use in a Rosewill external case to put all my movies on in my home theater room. It barely gets used. The first one died in about 2 months after I bought it. No biggie. I returned it using the online form. Seagate sent me out another one, Recertified after they received it. Now the 2nd one died after 4 months of use. Again, I barely use it except on the occasion I watch a movie in my home theater. While it is still under warranty, I don't want to keep doing this over and over. I should have stuck with Western Digital Black. Never had any issues with it. But a friend highly recommended the Barracudas. So I thought I give them a try. Never again.

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Worked until the warranty expired, then the click of death happened

Cons: shortly after warranty expired - the click of death happened! planned obsolescence at work!

Other Thoughts: failed shortly after warranty expired, planned obsolescence at work!

Buy WD or Hitachi hard drives instead!

3 out of 5 eggsinternal 3TB

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: ? could not get to work. "1720 imminent fairure message " when I tried to install. Have several other Seagate drives running with no problem.

Cons: Could not get to install.

Other Thoughts: Seems to be 2TB limiit which may be a problem with some of my older computers.

1 out of 5 eggsBoth drives failed in RAID 1

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Were moderately priced two years ago.

Cons: The drives were configured in a RAID 1, and were being used as a backup volume at a remote location. The first drive dropped from the array causing a degraded state. After restarting the system the array would not come online, and neither drive was available to mount. When I arrived on location one drive was audibly clicking. The other would spin up, but could not be detected by the system.

I removed both drives in order to test them in an external enclosure. The first drive was obviously dead, as it was constantly clicking until it shut itself off. The second drive was detectable in the external enclosure. Attempting to mount the drive would result in the volume being visible for about a minute. Attempting to transfer files would cause the drive to dismount and be undetectable until physically removed and reconnected. Attempting to reformat or repair the volume failed.

These drives were purchased June of 2012 and failed July of 2014. I could understand one drive failing, but both failing within hours is a bit suspect.

Other Thoughts: The system had four of these drives installed. Two of the four were still operating at the time of failure. They were immediately backed up to another brand drive, and have since been replaced.

Luckily it was the backup RAID drives that failed and not the primary media RAID. Otherwise the downtime would have been substantially longer.

1 out of 5 eggsStay away from Seagate

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: RMA's work well.

Cons: Any old seagate such as 7200.7 to 7200.10 are excellent, long lasting and reliable drives.

As soon as they hit 7200.11 (the worst of them all) it seems they forgot how to make drives.
I kid you not, a 7200.11 drive has a life expectancy of 6 months tops.

7200.12's die within 1.5 years.

And today I got the lovely experience to see a new client with this specific 7200.14 drive, Raid degraded. (we didn't sell it)

In short, I am disappointed to see that Seagate, who used to do great drives... after the horrible reputation slautering they got off the 7200.11... that they Still didn't resolve their unacceptable short lifespan drive issue... It's really really sad because the old 80 and 160gig drives are still alive and running flawlessly today.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor reliability

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Newegg delivery and price.

Cons: Bought this disk as a backup for a small NAS, needed to use the disk and it was dead. As the purchase was 5 months ago, no RMA!

Other Thoughts: We used over 40 Samsung 1TB drives with not one failure, we have used 6 of these Seagate 3TB and 3 have failed to date. Says it all really!
