5 out of 5 eggsSo Far So Good!!!

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I have to say I was a little hesitant when selecting this drive,Not because of the brand, but because of the negative reviews I read,I bought it anyways because the price was too good to pass up for a 3tb HDD.I am very pleased with this drive, haven't had any issue with it and the response time is great,I only used the drive for storage and to install large programs/games on.

Cons: None.

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It almost lasted 2 years.

Cons: 3 Identical drives all failed within 2 years. All three bought in 2013 (April, May, September). This is the last one.

Other Thoughts: Shame the throw away quality.

1 out of 5 eggsGood capacity, price, terrible reliability

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Good capacity, very good price. Probably the lowest price per gigabyte of any hard drive. When it works, performance is fine.

Cons: I bought 4 for a NAS. 2 died under warranty, 2 died out of warranty (and within 2 weeks of each other), for a 100% failure rate. 100%. I've never seen any hard drive with a 100% failure rate in 3 years and 4 months before. Don't buy these if you care about your data. Fortunately you can replace these with HGST Deskstars (NAS series or otherwise) in a Synology Hybrid RAID since those drives are just a little bit bigger than these.

Other Thoughts: 3 of the original drives were from China (the reputed "good" ones) and 1 was from Thailand (post flood). The under-warranty replacements were all from Thailand.

How Seagate can continue to sell these, and not even offer a 5-year warranty, is beyond me. I'm never buying Seagate again, I'll tell you that.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk HDD

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Worked great for the warranty period of 2 years. Now my 3TB drive is 1.5TB of unsafe storage.

Cons: At 2.5 years old, the drive suddenly started corrupting data. After running CHKDSK, the drive was so corrupt that roughly half of the entire disk space was marked as bad sectors and are unusable. Now I have a 3TB drive that is 1.5TB in size.

Other Thoughts: Drive is/was being used for all my family photos. Good thing I have external backup, as well as off-site. Otherwise I would be even more ticked off right now. On the positive note, I have 1.5TB of unstable storage space. Do yourself a favor and avoid like the plague. GO BUY A WESTERN DIGITAL DRIVE. There is a reason these things are 30-40% cheaper: reliability. It's just not worth the hassle and heartache to save a few bucks.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid Seagate until they address quality issues

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: relatively inexpensive

Cons: Shortly after they appeared on the market, I bought 9 of the Seagate ST3000DM001 three tb drives (eight for the RAID boxes, one as a spare) for two RAID 5 boxes after reading initial rave reviews about how great these drives were for use in NAS devices. I installed the Seagates in the RAID 5 boxes which were only turned on when needed to backup data. I did not leave the RAID running 24 hours a day as one might do with a regular NAS. Within a year, two of the Seagates drives had failed leading the loss of 4tb of crucial research data. Luckily a backup allowed partial restoration. In an unsuccessful effort to recover the data that was lost, I ran RAID recovery software for over 2 weeks.

A quick check online regarding the reliability of these drives led me to the remarkable Backblaze study which demonstrated the Seagate ST3000DM001's abysmal 45% failure rate compared to HGST's 1.5% failure rate. Disk checking software on several of the drives confirmed that the majority had sketchy SMART reports indicating they too were on the brink of failure. Having spent more than $1000 on these drives, I was understandably upset that the drives were failing within a year of light use.

Initially, the Seagate warranty representative agreed to replace the drives under warranty but denied that this particular model had any inherent problems. They rejected the Backblaze study as an inaccurate portrayal of the ST3000DM001 saying it was "flawed", but would not explain. Nonetheless, when I submitted the RMA, I received an email from Seagate asking for drive-scan reports on each drive or they would not replace them. By this point, I was at my wits end having had spent many days struggling with the problems caused by these drives. I had lost a significant amount of irreplaceable data and several thousand dollars worth of my time. A long succession of letters and telephone calls to Seagate ensued and they finally agreed to replace the drives. I asked if Seagate would replace them with 4tb drives (I would pay the cost differential), but they refused.

Now I am loathe to use the replacement factory-certified ST3000DM001 in my now-empty RAID boxes. Seagate manufactured a lemon and refuses to acknowledge this fact and announce a product recall. Evidence is even more damning now that Backblaze recently announced they have removed all of the Seagate ST3000DM001 drives from use simply because they are highly unreliable and cause too many problems.

Other Thoughts: Had Seagate replaced the lemon ST3000DM001 drives with their highly reliable 4tb model, my consumer trust in Seagate would have substantially reinforced, and right now I'd be writing a review to praise Seagate's commitment to quality rather than advice potential buyers to avoid Seagate drives in favor of HGST.

As of today, the nine drives Seagate sent to me sit on a shelf, still sealed in their anti-static wrapper. Expensive paper-weights but not good for much else.

2 out of 5 eggsYet another fail at 2.5 years

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Low cost, Get what you pay for.

Cons: Just one more failure at 2 and half years. Replace yours at 2 years or have good backups!

2 out of 5 eggsLongevity?

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: price and value, great storage value for the price.

Cons: I purchased 4 drives 2+ years ago for qnap storage. i had 2 drives fail (read error) at the same time. My computer guy and i are both concerned about stability and longevity, however as i already have 2 other working drives we felt that it would be safe to purchase 2 vs starting from scratch with other drives.

Other Thoughts: unsure if the problem was as a result of QNAP programming or was a straight drive failure.

1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Worked like a champ while it worked.

Cons: Drive failed in less than 3 months from purchase.

Other Thoughts: I have worked as a network engineer for awhile, and I know that hard drives fail. I purchased this drive brand new and it failed on me in less than 3 months. New Egg won't replace it because it is out of the warranty period. There is no covered manufacturer's warranty on this item, so beware! Luckily, Seagate has excellent customer service and because the drive failed in such a short time frame, they will replace the drive.

1 out of 5 eggsBuy a different drive

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: 3TB, relatively cheap

Cons: Horrible failure rates. I bought 4 drives in 2013. in mid 2015 I have had 2 drives fail and a third one is giving errors.

Other Thoughts: First, a drive failed and I thought "wow I was lucky to have those in raid, better send it back."
Then, while waiting for a replacement, a second drive failed and I thought "man I was really lucky that happened to be the non critical drive (raid 10.) But sadly it was out of warranty by two weeks so I went to bed thinking I would have to buy a replacement drive.
The next morning, a third drive started showing lots of DRDY errors and I suspect it will fail completely in the near future.

Needless to say I will be replacing all of the drives (including the replacement I was sent) and not purchasing a seagate drive in the future.
