1 out of 5 eggsJunk Drives

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: cheap drive vs. size

Cons: Just awful. Bought a ReadyNAS from NewEgg and 4 of these drives in Nov of 2012. 1 drive failed 2 weeks ago. I BOUGHT a replacement to get it quick and before I had a chance to install that drive, a second one failed, blowing up the RAID5 array and stored data. Put in another Seagate drive and when trying to rebuild the array through the ReadyNAS it wouldn't rebuild. Turns out that the utility identified additional errors on a 3rd drive and wouldn't recreate the array around the terminal HD. So now I have 3 in for RMA out of the 4. I have zero confidence in these units and wouldn't purchase them going forward under any circumstances.
Run away; buy something (anything) else.

Other Thoughts: Don't use these drives in any 'mission critical' application. Luckily, I was only using them for backups, so it wasn't catostrophic.

only recommend these to people you hate.

1 out of 5 eggsRun far, run fast, buy something else.

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: size vs. price.
these would be good for somebody you hate.

Cons: Awful piece of hardware. I bought this one to replace one that was a year asnd a half old that failed out of a ReadyNAS. By the time I installed it in the NAS box a second one of these had failed, rendering all of the data inaccessible (luckily it was just backup data). I had a spare one on the shelf that I installed in the unit and when I went to rebuild the array it wouldn't allow me to create a volume because a third one was tagged with bad blocks and was showing iminant failure. So, out of the 4 drives I got 18 months ago, 3 have had to be RMA'ed. Imagine my confidence in the replacement drives that are coming now...

Other Thoughts: MTBF is measured in months - not years with these drives. Do not use for critical data under any circumstances.

1 out of 5 eggsHORRIBLE QUALITY 3 of 3 are dead

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: None

Cons: Won't last you very long

Other Thoughts: I purchased 3 of these drives, completely sealed and brand new from a different reputable seller. About a year later, the first of three drives gave out. No warning, no nothing. I just use them as external drives at home for my media. Fast forward to a year later and within a month's time, BOTH of the last two drives failed as well. Utter nonsense. Lesson learned: I WILL NEVER EVER EVER buy a Seagate product again, or use one even if it's free for any valuable data.

1 out of 5 eggsNo More for me

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Price

Cons: This is a replacement for my original purchase that gave me problems from the get go. This one started having delays and corrupt data shortly after use. I'm just getting tired of sending drives back to Seagate just to get another refurbished drive in exchange that will also fail shortly after receiving it.

Other Thoughts: Enough is enough, no more getting sucked in because the price may be a few dollars cheaper than a more reliable brand.

1 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: A lot of storage

Cons: Failed after 1.5 yrs in a Buffalo NAS device that sits quietly inside a closet. Have two identical HDs in the NAS unit. The defective one is noticeably warmer than the one that's still working.

Other Thoughts: Years of reliable service is the most important quality of a HD. This one hasn't passed the test.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Drives

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Ordered four of these for my diskless Pegasus2 R4 I picked up. I popped them into the disk trays and they all spun up and I went to work initializing my RAID5 setup. Many hours later I was greeted with a wicked fast RAID5 array and have been loving it ever since. I would have no hesitation on purchasing these drives ever again. I will be ordering some more for some spares.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Props to Newegg on their packaging. I have been ordering from them for numerous years and this was by far the best packaged drive set I have received from them!

2 out of 5 eggsIt was good at first....

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: - High storage
- Fast transfer
- Great Price

Cons: - Unstable It would dismount from my computer at random intervals so I couldn't use it reliable only for backups.
- Died within 8 months of purchase.

Other Thoughts: The drive is always connected, but not always on. I only use it to archive video files that I don't need to have handy or that I finished editing. Because of it's large capacity, I wanted to start using it as my only drive for TimeMachine backups, but I would find that the drive would unmount and the backup would not finish. I didn't think anything of it because I have a WD drive that I use for my TimeMachine backups but it's only 2TBs.

This past week I noticed that my computer wasn't recognizing the drive at all but it would appear when I brought up the iMac's disk utility to perform a "Verify Disk", but it would stop with the following message:

"OS X can't repair the disk "3 TB Seagate Barracuda ."
You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can.

I kept getting that message over and over and over again.
For fear that it might completely die before saving the ONLY copies of the video files I've amassed during a 3 year period, I decided to connect the drive to my spare iMac and start transferring the files among different external hard drives that I currently use.

Yesterday I finished transferring all the files and it was just on time as the drive is no longer working or being recognized by any of my computers.

Now I don't want to return it or get my money back. Since I only purchased it 8 months ago and it's still under warranty AND it should still be working, I just need to know how to go about getting a replacement. I'm not upset because I was able to save my files, but I'm still irritated that this happened. I have 2 Fanthom Harddrives that I've had for over 5 years and are still going strong even though I put them through their paces. Those two hard drives have been with me through different travels by plane and car across the whole US and they are fine. Why did the seagate die?

So I need to know if Newegg.com or Seagate will be replacing this drive, because believe you me, this drive WILL get replaced. it's still under warranty and I have a copy of my receipt.

2 out of 5 eggsDidn't last two years

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Storage

Cons: Didn't last two years

Other Thoughts: Unfortunately my IMac came with a Seagate hard drive and I'm not able to install a WD hard drive so I have to stick with Seagate. Luckily my drive crashed just 10 days shy of the two year warranty so I'm getting a free replacement. I'm sorry but these drives should last for more than 2 years. This will now be my 3rd Seagate hard drive in my 4 year old IMac.

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: cheap.

Cons: One has a CRC error right off the bat, and the other one has some issues with it. I just opened them after having them for a month on the shelf to install them in my NAS.

Other Thoughts: Total Junk.

2 out of 5 eggsEh.... maybe

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: - Cheap
- Quiet
- Low power
- Good transfer rates

Cons: I was fortunate enough to experience no DOA's when I ordered these, however, when I purchased 6 of these drives, they originally had only a 1-year warranty. (My oversight, I wouldn't have bought them had I noticed this) Surprise, surprise, right around the 13 month mark, they started dropping like flies and 4 out of the original 6 have completely failed at this time (the 20 month mark). Fortunately enough, I was able to convince Seagate to extend my warranties for the drives out to 2 years, since this is what the drives now offer, and get the 4 which have failed so far RMA'ed. The drives may have differently reliabilities now, 2 years later in 2014, but mine had a roughly 67% failure rate, so choose wisely.

Other Thoughts: I bought 6 of these drives in December of 2012 during a very fast flash sale for $89.99. This was an incredible price in late 2012 for 3TB drives. In the end, these drives offer bargain basement storage costs. Sure, they might be unreliable and fail, but if you have solid backups, this is merely an inconvenience (albeit a very annoying one). I actually really like Seagate's RMA process, since I usually do the advanced RMA. They send you a new drive with a pre-printed shipping label and packing material to return your broken one for $9.99, which is often better than what you would pay to ship it yourself UPS. You will trade reliability for cost with this drive, but if you can live with that, they're a nice cheap, essentially disposable HDD.
