2 out of 5 eggsNot Worth The Hassel

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: large amount of storage

Cons: Not Reliable

Other Thoughts: I, like many others, purchased this drive thinking "These bad experiences people are having will not happen to me."

I was wrong. I am here to let potential buyers know. Don't risk your data. I had a good solid 2 years of performance out of this drive and sure enough my drive just crashed. It powers up but I cannot read it with anything including multiple data recovery tools.

I've used Seagate and Western Digital all my life and to be honest, I would much rather the hard drive manufacturers go back to more solid smaller size drives that have longer life spans then these huge drives that burn out faster then a candle.

I doubt I'll try to contact Seagate Tech Support as most of the reviews here express a poor experience and I simply do not feel like arguing with someone that isn't going to do anything.

Not sure what drive I'll be purchasing to replace it. I will update my review when I find a suitable replacement.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk!

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: -price
-capacity

Cons: Died exactly 3 days after 2+1 year extended warranty expired. And the worst part is, that I copied all off my info from my 7 years old WD Black, because it seams to pass away too. But it still works and this piece of junk just makes few clicking sound and stops. Never, never buy seagate drives. I read tons of complains and I am so upset that I was so stupid to buy it 3 years ago.

Other Thoughts: Garbage!

5 out of 5 eggsSeagate made things right!

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: The drive performed well while it lasted.

Cons: It died just outside of warranty.

Other Thoughts: I've been a fan of Seagate for years. Over a decade ago i had a multiple Western Digital drives fail on me and switched to Seagate. It's hard to guess exactly how many Seagate drives I've owned over the years but between desktops, laptops, external drives, HTPC's, NAS, i'd guess it's 75+ easy. Years ago i had one drive die on me and honestly cant remember if it was replaced under warranty or if it died of natural causes at a ripe old age.

Recently i had my second drive fail just outside the warranty. At the time i wasn't sure how long the warranty was and contacted Seagate. Turns out it was just outside the 2 year warranty. I was disappointed to say the least and the rep i got on the phone wasn't very helpful or friendly. Sure, the warranty was technically expired but quite honestly when something like this happens, i expect the company to make it right. If they don't i am no longer their customer. I don't expect an unlimited warranty by any means, but i do think it's part of good customer service when something like this happens.

Well the rep i got was no help and I initially wrote a review, basically saying i was done with Seagate and unhappy with the drive or the customer service. Unexpectedly Seagate reached out to me, apologized and exchanged the drive. That's the kind of customer service that i expect and keeps me as a loyal customer. The guy who contacted me was exceptionally courteous and expedited the exchange free of charge for my troubles. When he was preparing the order, he said that they were low on stock and asked if it would be acceptable to send a 4tb drive instead. Not sure if that's what they're sending or not, but i really don't care. They could have offered a 1TB drive and i would have been happy that they actually cared about customer service.

I really have only one regret, that during the time between when i wrote my review and was contacted by Seagate I bought a Western Digital 6tb red drive to drop into a Tivo. Nonetheless, I'm glad i can continue to buy and recommend Seagate drives and can go with the 8tb drives in a couple NAS devices i'm building.... 64TB of Seagate goodness here i come! :)

1 out of 5 eggsDead in 5 months

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: For 5 months it stored my files without any trouble.

Cons: It died in 5 months. Makes a chirping sound every few minutes and my computer freezes when I try to explore or reformat it. What a waste of money.

1 out of 5 eggsSave yourself the trouble

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: High 7200 Speed and large capacity WOULD have made this perfect for installing and running all those massive games that eat up so much space.

Cons: Failed after around 3ish years. Sucks to have a drive this large that should have lasted through a number of PC builds fail and lose everything

Other Thoughts: Live and Learn. I guess I'll be avoiding this brand in the future. WD used to be a top dog in the industry but with this short of a lifespan (and it appears I'm not the only one) I'll be looking into other brands from now on.

1 out of 5 eggsA Complete Failure

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: None, really - there are no pros to this drive. it might work for you for awhile but it WILL fail within 2yrs 6mos

Cons: 6 drives, 4 failures at various times. I purchased 4 drives up front for a FreeNAS box I was building. I should have known from the beginning that this was not going to go well but I had previously owned 1.5TB and 2.0TB drives from Seagate without issues. In the first batch of 4 a drive was DOA. I RMA'd and got a refurb drive which was ALSO showing failure after a few days. I contacted Seagate directly and convinced them to send me a new NEW drive (no refurb) because of my problems. (already 2 failed drives out of 6!). I put them in a RAIDZ (RAID5 ZFS) and all seemed well. Fast forward to JUST AFTER the 2 year warranty and I had another drive fail. I purchased a new 3TB drive to replace it and while it was rebuilding my RAIDZ another drive FAILED! I have lost all the data (I did have backups of important documents such as taxes and family pictures and videos thankfully!). I am out so much data

Other Thoughts: Take it from me. Look at the egg ratings. Look at the spread between 4/5 star and 1 star ratings. Look at the rants from those such as myself who have lost data. Look online at the failure rate of these drives. Do yourself a favor, spend 10 or 20 more on a drive with good ratings!

1 out of 5 eggsWorst Drives

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap drive but not cheap enough for how long it lasts

Cons: Seagate needs to improve there drives, had them years ago and then had issues and used WD. I decided to give them a try. So I had the 3TB fail at 2 years and 3 months and the 2TB fail at 2 years and 2 months. So within a month I am out 5TB. Seagate used to warranty their drives longer, the reason they now have it at 2 years is because of so many failures they cant afford to warranty the drives. Do yourself a favor and stick with WD unless you want to fork out more money and lose data every 2 years or so.
