1 out of 5 eggsDropping Off Like Flies

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: High rate of transfer both on reads and writes
Fairly inexpensive

Cons: High DOA rate
Minimal Warranty
Lasts just over 1.5 years

Other Thoughts: As a network administrator I tend to purchase quite a fair amount of technology, both for corporate use and personal. My home network comprises several dozen of these specific model drives over the years and they have been fairly good until recent when several all went dead at once nearing the 2 year mark that I use for backups.

Further adding insult to injury is that several more that are used on my main computers are now reporting severe sector errors, meaning I will most likely lose several more in the coming days. Data loss is looking closer and closer to a reality.

Spend the extra money and use a different brand. Seagate used to be high quality, but it is starting to feel like they are designed to last just long enough to get through the warranty period.

After my experience ends with these in the coming weeks, I will be replacing every last Seagate drive in my network, regardless of condition. The possibility of further data loss down the line is too much to risk.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Drive

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Fast Speeds, Easy install,

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Newegg sells an install kit for this exact as well if you need the mounting kit and mounting screws- This is a bare drive and just the drive- No screws or mounting kit

1 out of 5 eggsFailed out of warrantee by a few weeks

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: -price
-capacity

Cons: -Failed after 13 months, just a few weeks past warrantee

Other Thoughts: Seagate used to make quality products but lately, the only brand of drive I own that's constantly failed is Seagate. I'm going back to WD.

3 out of 5 eggsOnly for super geeks!

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It's a huge drive from a good company. Awesome newegg pricing.

Cons: BUYER BEWARE - No version of Windows recognizes the full 3 tb.
WORSE: Seagate's newest version of DiscWizard fails to partition and format this disc! (except under certain newer hardware)
I was able to make this into the Seagate default of 2 partitions (2 tb and 0.746 tb) ONLY by using the gparted utility under Linux. (LINUX MINT ROCKS.)
I'm deducting two eggs for the anguish this caused me.

2 out of 5 eggsFailed within 2 years

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Good and quiet for about 1.8 years

Cons: Got End to End errors after 1.8 years

Other Thoughts: The warranty is 2 years...I think I am lucky that I can still ask for replacement?

2 out of 5 eggsDon't plan to have them work at all beyond the 2 year warranty

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Does the job, installation & usage indistinguishable from any other drive.

Cons: They don't last long. Bought a pair with a two year warranty. One failed at 22 months (got a refurbished replacement). The second failed at 24 1/2 months, and the refurbished one failed after 4 months. And it took 4 weeks to get the refurbished unit because they were 'out of stock'. So the average life was 25 months, starting to feel disposable. And they always fail suddenly, without warning.

Other Thoughts: Seagate seems to have perfected the life of their drives to be almost exactly 2 years. They used to last 5 years+, now barely make it through the warranty.

I am going to pay a bit more and go with a brand that tests have shown to last longer. Seagate is the cheapest, but there is a reason for that.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed in just over year

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap large capacity

Cons: Failed in just over a year, pretty slow for 7200 rpm drive

Other Thoughts: This is a low end drive, best suited for a RAID setup. The capacity it too large with questionable reliability at this capacity.

2 out of 5 eggsAlso failing after 2.5 years!

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Nothing special here....

Cons: After 2.5 years the drive is failing with average use.

Other Thoughts: They really pegged down how long of a warranty to give these things. I feel like I am done with Seagate but I have a 1TB Seagate drive I bought May of 2009 that has been the harder worked drive that is still going strong.
