1 out of 5 eggs2 Years until Death did we part.

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: So, I purchased 6 of these in April of 2014. 2 years into this install my first one dies for no apparent reason? I use a 3rd party tool that monitors S.M.A.R.T. data and it sends alerts about the health and status of my hard drives. There was no indication the health was going bad on this drive at all and then: BAM! Dead.
I thought quality used to stand for something with a company name like Seagate but now I'm afraid of the other 5 of the 6 drives I purchased all at once are going to do now. Are they going to die soon as well? Just because the software says they are healthy I no longer trust it losing 2.5TB of data I can never recover again. I'm now backing up everything else up with a huge stack of BD data disks with my burner in preparation for this before they drop for no reason like my 1st one did. I didn't think that I'd be buying 2 years of life for what is supposed to last for what I expect at least 5 years or longer.

Other Thoughts: -I would NOT recommend this product to anybody.
-2 year lifespan? Come on that's just not right and I'm not a millionaire that can afford to keep upgrading storage every two years or less to prevent data loss.
-Looks like I'll have to find a vendor that cares about their product instead of shoveling this "Highly Reliable" paperweight out the door without QC checks or whatever it is they claim to do to certify reliability of these drives.
-According to my Newegg account this product cannot be returned because it's ineligible.
-Thanks for opening my eyes Seagate. Next time around I will NOT be tempted by a low price carrot dangling in front of my face.
-This isn't Newegg's fault. They delivered what I paid for in a timely manner and back then all the reviews were highly positive. I can't believe how upside down the reviews are after only two years of being released
-Buyer beware. Don't re-live my lesson here of buying cheap hoping its a good, quality product.
-Now I have to research replacing my other 5 drives before I lose them as well and FAST.

1 out of 5 eggsVery disapointed customer

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: when it was working I liked the data transfer speed was decent

Cons: this drive has a high failure rate, tons of complaints online about it failing, I had mine little over year and now its failing, seagate will send me another one under warranty but Im not too happy about that cause this model drive is defective and unreliable I dont really want another drive thats going to fail again after a year, I have a seagate barracuda been reliable lasting on 7 years now so you can imagine my disappointment with this drive...Buyer beware, Im going to also complain to consumer affairs about this drive, I dont make a lot of money and to me this cost a pretty penny, I feel I wasted $100

Other Thoughts: next time I'm buying WD they cost more but they are worth it.

1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable, not worth even $1

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It was cheap to buy initially.

Cons: Product is unreliable. I purchased two and installed one, it failed within six months. Class action lawsuit over this lousy product.

Other Thoughts: Do NOT buy!

1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: - 3TB for a decent price

Cons: Just search the failure rates on these hard drives.

Blackblaze has a blog post out on their failure rates being much higher than any other harddrive they use.
There is a class action lawsuit over the failure rate on this hard drive.

1 out of 5 eggsTicking Time Bomb drives

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: price and 7200rpm

Cons: bad sectors galore. poor QA by seagate.

Other Thoughts: These drives don't even pass Seagate's own SeaTools tests. I had one of these fail just past the one year mark. The replacement i purchased wouldn't pass a Surface Test. Returned the drive to NewEgg and the replacement they sent me was never received. I had to file a claim and 2 weeks later received another replacement. That drive didn't pass Surface Test either. Since i needed the drive to perform data recovery, i ended up using it and now it's past 30 day return. Now i have a bunch of these ticking time bomb drives from seagate.

look up the class action lawsuit. ... sick of hearing the "all drives fail" comments everywhere. I still have hard drives from the early 2000s.

1 out of 5 eggsExpect this drive to fail

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Seagate's RMA process. It is pretty easy to get the drive replaced.

Cons: Eventually the Warranty expires. I have 6 of these drives. This is not datacenter use, just archival storage and backup for home, yet I have probably had 4 to 6 RMA events. I just lost the first of the drives that is no longer under warranty.

Other Thoughts: -I would not recommend to a friend
-I will not purchase again

1 out of 5 eggsBroke after 5 months. I've had many Seagates and all still working. I guess my luck ran out.

1 out of 5 eggsDo NOT buy this Seagate DM Hard Drives Series!!

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: The price is relativity cheap - but you'll only get what you pay for - probably much less!!!

Cons: I have discarded over a DOZEN of these DM Series Hard Drives after they totally failed with two years. Seagate knows they have a real lemon on their hands with these drives, but continues to pump them out to unsuspecting customers. Unless you don't care about any data that you might store on one of these DM drives - you should never buy one of these DM Series drives! Newegg should stop selling these drives, since they (Newegg) know how many 1000s of these failed drives have been discarded.

Other Thoughts: On the bright side, Seagate also manufacturers an outstanding NAS Hard Drive, the VN Series, that has none of the defects of the DM Series. The NAS VN Series drives are just a few dollars more than the substandard DM drives, and worth every extra penny. If you're looking for a solid performing storage drive, then buy any of the VN Series of NAS drives, they work flawlessly, are fast, are quiet, are cool running, and have a much better warranty.

3 out of 5 eggsStill running.

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Well priced, when I purchased it, and it's still running (quietly) in a home-based server that runs 24/7.

Cons: This particular model has a terrible reliability record (see backblaze.com's reports), but mine's still OK (knock, knock).

Other Thoughts: Looks like the 4 TB drives (ST4000DM001, IIRC) are much more reliable ... and still well priced.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Anonymous,

We are glad to read that your 3TB drive is working well for you.

We wanted to note that some of the Seagate drives used in the Backblaze study were not designed for use in a data center environment. It is important to match the right drive to the right workload.

We would like to note that for systems that are running 24/7, our NAS HDD would be better suited for your systems. Please reference the following link for additional details on this drive:

2 out of 5 eggsFailure prone

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Large storage, cheapest $/GB when I bought it

Cons: I've had this drive for about 3.5 years and it just failed last night. No indication that it was going to fail, just flat out died. Of course it is out of warranty too (What happened to the 5 year warranties? Products can't cut it anymore?)

I'm worried that Seagate's QA has gone down in recent years judging by the many other reviewers posting similar issues.
