1 out of 5 eggsBuyer Beware

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Fast while it lasts

Cons: Doesn't last. Google "seagate failure rate" to see how this particular drive has a ~40% death rate.

Other Thoughts: Nothing against Seagate, just this one drive isn't reliable at all.

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Lasted 30 months and now dead. Used in my NAS. Waiting on the other to drop dead. I am done with Seagate. I have used them for years, but the last 3 years, all my drives have had issues.

1 out of 5 eggsNot reliable at all

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Lots of storage space.
Much cheaper than equivalent Western Digital drives.

Cons: These drives are not reliable at all.

Early warning sign:
- Of all the drives I own (all but these are of other brands), the Seagates were the only ones which showed a non-zero amount on the Seek Error Rate shown by CrystalDiskInfo.
- Granted, because this is a third party tool this may or may not mean anything. So I didn't rush to RMA them soon after purchase. But perhaps it was a warning of what was to come.

Trouble:
- Just under a year ago, when copying files to or from these disks it would take three or more times as long as it did when copying those same files between non Seagate drives with similar specifications (3TB, 7200 RPM, 64 MB cache, RAID 1, same Motherboard).
- Event log showed a bunch of timeouts being reported out of the port to which one of these drives was connected. My initial thought was fragmentation, so I proceeded with a defrag which took about a day to complete (because of the timeouts). This seemed to fix the problem for a while.
- Not long after, the timeouts came back. So I decided to leave static data on them.
- Late last week I decided to pull one of the drives and run tests on it, including SeaTools from Seagate. For starters CrystalDiskInfo showed a caution warning related to Uncorrectable sector count. So I tried Seagate tools and it couldn't complete the tests. I tried chkdsk and that too failed.
- After backing up the data to a different Raid 1 array, I pulled the second drive and it had the same issues.
- Furthermore, three of the files I had on this disk were unrecoverable. As soon as the OS tried to read them the OS would disconnect the hard drive. I'm thinking those files were sitting on the bad sectors. Not a huge loss since I was able to recover the files from offline storage.

Other Thoughts: This is an update to a prior review I had done of this product (February of 2014). My original review was two months after purchase. Both drives were working fine and were fast. Over a year has passed and these drives are on the verge of complete failure, so I've taken them out of service and I'm sending them back to Seagate.

These drives are cheaper for a reason. Stay away from them.

4 out of 5 eggsST3000DM001

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: +Fast (135-100mbps 1st TB, 100-80mbps:2nd, 80-55mbps:3rd)
+good price per TB
+Lasted quite long
+My luck, it failed slowly with a lot of warnings.
(Thanks to whoever developed S.M.A.R.T)

other basic stuff: SATA3, 64MB Cache, 7200rpms ,S.M.A.R.T
*Does not park heads every 8 seconds

Cons: -It did finally die err... fail
-Lasted only 2 years (Had 13884 Power_On_Hours)

Other Thoughts: This HDD was used as a NAS Drive utilizing N4F. Was kept On 24/7 even though according to seagate its designed for 8/5 usage. Still for the price, I'm not complaining. I have bought many seagate products in the past and they have lasted me through out the years. This is the first HDD that has failed me that came from seagate.
Bought Apr 2013. Died may 2015.

3 out of 5 eggsHigh Failure Rate

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Unreliable

Other Thoughts: I have 6 of these stocked in a 6-bay NAS. After a short while they started dropping like flies -- about one total failure every few months. The RMA process was painless and pretty fast. I have so far replaced the warranty of all 6 original drives without additional cost. These are time bombs, but they're really cheap. If you keep them on RAID 6 or 10, then you'll probably get away with saving quite a lot of money without loss like I have. Just be aware.

3 out of 5 eggsfailed after 22 months

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: it was a good price, and I trusted the Seagate name at the time.

Cons: I've never had a Seagate fail so soon. I guess I've been lucky until now.

3 out of 5 eggsLasted 15 Months

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cost per MB was cheaper than other drives. Two year warranty.

Cons: Lasted only 15 months. Have to pay to send drive back.

Other Thoughts: Drive was in my Drobo NAS appliance. To be fair my data closet is not as cool as I'd like, but it's not hot either, so I'm not sure if that aided with the failure. I confirmed the drive fault with Seagate's SeaTools application and I'm just beginning the RMA process.

1 out of 5 eggsDrive failures after less than a year of use

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: None

Cons: Poor Life Span
Crummy RMA Process

Other Thoughts: Purchased drives back in August of 2013, but never actually installed them until July of 2014. Within months, one drive showed obvious signs of failure. Drive would randomly drop and not be recognized by the OS. SeaTools took longer than other drives of the same model to run a short test and failed a full. Drive gave SMART errors this week. Event logs are flooding with errors on another drive now. Short DST is failing on the other two drives now. Drives were an utter waste of time and money and now I have to pay more money to RMA a defective product back to Seagate. Why should I have to pay money out of my pocket to return a device that was poorly manufactured? Never purchasing a Seagate drive again. Completely unreliable. Died almost outside of Warranty time frame.
