Pros: Well its a 3 terabyte hard drive, and it costs next to nothing. What's to hate about that?

Cons: none

2 out of 5 eggsST3000DM001

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Fast. Big. Lasts at least as long as the warranty.

Cons: Two failed drives within one week of each other in a 3-drive RAID5 array.
Warranty is 2-years and I bought the drives exactly 25 months ago.
SMART reporting is erroneous.

Other Thoughts: I bought one for myself on Black Friday special. With such luck I bought 3 more for a RAID5 array for a workstation at my job.
Two of the drives in the array failed within a week of each other requiring immediate trips to get overpriced drives at a big box store.
Somehow my array hit a degraded state; one of my failed drives was still kind of online. The controller would recognize the failing drive as "healthy" and Windows loaded (separate system drive), after a few minutes of initiating the RAID management software, the drive shut down and Windows would freeze.
Wishing on a star and praying to several deities, I used a low-level cloning tool to copy the drive (minus sector errors) to my new overpriced WD Black, and the array is back online and rebuilt on the degraded drive.
Now I'm just waiting for the last drive in this array to fail as well as the one I bought for my backup drive at home (SMART reports fitness is 0%).
Overall I'd this drive is maybe a 2.5/5. It seems to work fine until it suddenly doesn't.
I have to see my therapist about how I can't trust Seagate, SMART or RAID5 anymore.

1 out of 5 eggsComplete and utter garbage - 110% failure rate after 18 months

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It's a cheap hard drive if you're in the business of selling cut-rate computers to customers you don't care if you'll ever see again.

Cons: I am not in that business.

I purchased 10 of these hard drives over the course of 6 months to build up my home media workstation. They started failing almost immediately, and over the course of 18 months since this whole thing started, every single one of those 10 has been replaced under warranty, and yesterday I had to return one of the replacements that died, thankfully also under warranty. So yeah, 11 returns out of 10 drives is not a good deal to be in.

Other Thoughts: These were all installed in a massive 12-bay chassis with lots of fans and rubber mounting grommets to klll vibration, and all in a temp controlled office at my house with an HVAC zone all to itself. It is inconceivable that it's an environmental issue. Seasonic 850 watt power supply, high end gigabyte motherboard, 8-port SAS controller (9211-8i) with 8 more on the motherboard. Nothing about the build could have contributed to this.

I've since replaced them all with another brand and haven't had any issues at all. The only problem now is what do I do with 10 hard drives that can't be trusted? Oh, I know, WILL IT BLEND?

1 out of 5 eggsFailed just after a year

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It did what it was supposed to do for a year

Cons: It didn't do what it was supposed to do after a year

Other Thoughts: I've had 3 hard drives fail on me in my life. The first two were Seagate's about 10 years ago and so I've bought only WD since. About a year ago I decided to drop my Seagate prejudice and bought two of these. Now after one year (of light usage) one has already failed. I guess they haven't gotten their act together after all this time.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Drive

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I bought 3 of these around 12/1/2013. I'm a developer and my systems stay on 24/7 so a lot of cycles. I've not had any issues of any kind with these drives. The temp's stay in range and no SMART alerts.

Great value and will buy more when on sale again.

Cons: None but will update this review if issues encountered later.

1 out of 5 eggsBad quality

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: slightly cheaper than other brands

Cons: Failed to work after 1.5 years for me. I used it in a NAS.

Other Thoughts: Never buy a Seagate HD again. Pay more and buy other brands, like WD or HGST, with better reliability.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk Drives

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: cheap drive vs. size

Cons: Just awful. Bought a ReadyNAS from NewEgg and 4 of these drives in Nov of 2012. 1 drive failed 2 weeks ago. I BOUGHT a replacement to get it quick and before I had a chance to install that drive, a second one failed, blowing up the RAID5 array and stored data. Put in another Seagate drive and when trying to rebuild the array through the ReadyNAS it wouldn't rebuild. Turns out that the utility identified additional errors on a 3rd drive and wouldn't recreate the array around the terminal HD. So now I have 3 in for RMA out of the 4. I have zero confidence in these units and wouldn't purchase them going forward under any circumstances.
Run away; buy something (anything) else.

Other Thoughts: Don't use these drives in any 'mission critical' application. Luckily, I was only using them for backups, so it wasn't catostrophic.

only recommend these to people you hate.

1 out of 5 eggsRun far, run fast, buy something else.

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: size vs. price.
these would be good for somebody you hate.

Cons: Awful piece of hardware. I bought this one to replace one that was a year asnd a half old that failed out of a ReadyNAS. By the time I installed it in the NAS box a second one of these had failed, rendering all of the data inaccessible (luckily it was just backup data). I had a spare one on the shelf that I installed in the unit and when I went to rebuild the array it wouldn't allow me to create a volume because a third one was tagged with bad blocks and was showing iminant failure. So, out of the 4 drives I got 18 months ago, 3 have had to be RMA'ed. Imagine my confidence in the replacement drives that are coming now...

Other Thoughts: MTBF is measured in months - not years with these drives. Do not use for critical data under any circumstances.

1 out of 5 eggsHORRIBLE QUALITY 3 of 3 are dead

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: None

Cons: Won't last you very long

Other Thoughts: I purchased 3 of these drives, completely sealed and brand new from a different reputable seller. About a year later, the first of three drives gave out. No warning, no nothing. I just use them as external drives at home for my media. Fast forward to a year later and within a month's time, BOTH of the last two drives failed as well. Utter nonsense. Lesson learned: I WILL NEVER EVER EVER buy a Seagate product again, or use one even if it's free for any valuable data.
