1 out of 5 eggsDied within a year

Pros: Was reasonably cheap. Was very fast

Cons: Unreliable in that it died within a year.

Other Thoughts: Sadly, we have seen Seagate drive quality go down seriously over the last couple of years. Although Seagate is going to send me another drive, it does not replace the lost data. I can recover everything given time and effort, but why should you have a backup drive if you cannot trust it to last a while? Makes the whole point of USB backup drives silly. So, I would recommend staying away from anything Seagate till they can get their quality control back up where it used to be.

1 out of 5 eggsBad purchase

Pros: Inexpensive for a 3TB drive.
Silent.
Nice design.
Small foot print.

Cons: Stopped working after three months, impossible to recover the data inside.
Do you need another con?.

Other Thoughts: What good is a HD that you can't rely on?. What good is it that it's inexpensive if after a couple months of use you lose everything that you had inside?.

Data is PRICELESS, please don't find this the hard way. ALWAYS have backups.

1 out of 5 eggsFailure

Pros: Large Space. Wanted a second external to use as a backup drive.

Cons: Failed after about 6-8 months. Started by failing to dismount during shutdown. Eventually lost all data.

1 out of 5 eggsDied at 45 days

Pros: USB 3.0, fairly fast while it (briefly) worked

Cons: Poor quality. Purchased two of these in early September, 45 days later, one has already died and it was only powered up twice to run a couple backup jobs. It will no longer connect to any PC. So it's been RMA'd to Seagate.

Other Thoughts: Drive reliability, especially for 2TB - 3TB drives, seems to have really gone downhill. This enclosure, and the drive inside, are made in China and the quality apparently isn't what it used to be with drives from Thailand, Singapore, etc. Judging from other negative reviews, this Seagate is especially prone to failures.

Considering how critical data is to most people, the high failure rates (which often seem to be around 1 in 5 drives or even higher) are unnaceptable. There are only a couple drive companies left in the world and they seem to be in a race to the bottom to see who can make the cheapest possible drives.

3 out of 5 eggsLUCKY?

Pros: 129.99, can still use 3.0 interface chip-set, removed from enclosure.
Drives weren't DOA or malfunctioning, as of yet.
Cheaper than Bare drive, but shipped better protected, in rubber mounts, inside case inside box inside another box. This probably contributes to better life, if taken out of the enclosure immediately and used in an actively cooled pc case. Better throughput than 5900 drives.

Cons: Once removed from enclosures, you have no warranty, so test them a little first, just to make sure. No that they really have much of a warranty anyway 1 year, so either they work, or they don't you get no solid warranty over leaving them in the enclosure, but I think the heat would kill them quicker, and if used in PC case will contribute to their survival. Could have better short write performance, my FEG4 raid 0 array boots a little faster, and has quicker random access than these in raid 0, given the FEG4's have half the cache, the disc densities are supposedly the same, while running at 5400 rpm...
And they were bare drives an still have over a year warranty left, of the original 3 years

Other Thoughts: no cheaper or faster 3tb alternative

3 out of 5 eggsSurprisingly loud

Pros: Inexpensive.

Cons: The hard drive fan is louder than either of my Macs, and is almost as loud as my gaming machine. Annoying without being unbearable.

2 out of 5 eggsFirst one DOA, second one good

Pros: Easy replacement from newegg, but have to pay return shipping.
Second one is working fine.

Cons: First one was DOA, and it cost $14.28 to ship it back for RMA, which makes the price no longer a good buy.
