1 out of 5 eggsPoor quality very short warranty

Pros: low price
*not really a pro once you consider early failure and extremely short warranty period.

Cons: early failure
extremely short warranty period (1 year)
complete data loss
bad brand
I DO NOT RECOMMEND SEAGATE!

Other Thoughts: One should ALWAYS judge the quality of a hard drive by it's warranty length. I should have known better. I do not usually buy Seagate, now I am reminded why.

1 out of 5 eggs1 x Seagate Expansion 3TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive

Pros: Lost three years data stored on drive.

Cons: Lost three years data stored on drive.

Other Thoughts: Bought in May 2012. Worked great until last month. Began acting up. Would show up on some boots and not others. Finally, it won't boot up at all. Now just clicks. It just sat on desktop and was never moved. Lost three years of saved data. Thought Seagate was a good brand name. l try Western Digital next time.

1 out of 5 eggsNot a Reliable Drive

Pros: It looks pretty.

Cons: After sending 1 TB of archival files to the Seagate drive and before I could backup the critical files, the Seagate drive dumped its directory . I've tried to recover the files but could only get the jpeg files. I lost all the RAW and Photoshop files.

Other Thoughts: I am afraid to trust this drive again, assuming I could get it working again.

4 out of 5 eggsnot a total loss and not really Seagate's fault

Pros: See previous review

Cons: See previous review

Other Thoughts: When the device "died" it didn't really die - it just lost the boot sector or maybe the FAT. I tried using Testdisk to recover data but, was not able to. Nor was I able to rebuild the bootsector. However, I was able to repartition and reformat the drive and it is once again in service.

The problem appears to be when the power is lost to the computer or drive; or when disconnected from computer without using "Safe Removal" utility. This is a common problem for all external storage devices - not just Seagate.

The way I recovered use of the drive (not the data) was to repartition it using GParted. Then on Windows 7 Disk Management I converted it to GPT. After creating a simple partition the drive appeared in My Computer and works just like before.

Note: I took mine apart to put the drive in a PC running Linux to repartition. I reformatted it as GPT using the case and USB cable on Windows 7. Opening the case voids the warranty - but mine was out of warranty by 3 days.

2 out of 5 eggsDied 1 year, 3 days after purchase

Pros: Quiet and easy to use.

Cons: Literally 3 days out of warranty it died. Seatools can do nothing with it.

Other Thoughts: Last Seagate product I will ever knowingly purchase.

1 out of 5 eggsDied within a year

Pros: Was reasonably cheap. Was very fast

Cons: Unreliable in that it died within a year.

Other Thoughts: Sadly, we have seen Seagate drive quality go down seriously over the last couple of years. Although Seagate is going to send me another drive, it does not replace the lost data. I can recover everything given time and effort, but why should you have a backup drive if you cannot trust it to last a while? Makes the whole point of USB backup drives silly. So, I would recommend staying away from anything Seagate till they can get their quality control back up where it used to be.

1 out of 5 eggsBad purchase

Pros: Inexpensive for a 3TB drive.
Silent.
Nice design.
Small foot print.

Cons: Stopped working after three months, impossible to recover the data inside.
Do you need another con?.

Other Thoughts: What good is a HD that you can't rely on?. What good is it that it's inexpensive if after a couple months of use you lose everything that you had inside?.

Data is PRICELESS, please don't find this the hard way. ALWAYS have backups.
